Story speculation!

The paperback edition of The King of Attolia will be here soon!  As Rowana said a few weeks ago, it will contain an original short story featuring Eddis, as a child, and the gods.

What do you think might happen in the story?  Will it involve Baby Gen?  Eddis's parents?  Bears?  All ideas are welcome, serious or insane.

And this is suddenly devolving rapidly into another terrible parody in my head, in which Nahusaresh is the evil fairy, and if Eddis ever pricks her finger on a brooch, she will fall asleep for a hundred years, which is of course why Gen keeps stealing them.

On a slightly more serious note, perhaps we'll find out more about her brothers' deaths? It would be nice to see her parents, particularly since we know her father's dead, and it seems safe to assume that her mother is too. Since it involves the gods, I don't think she'll be that young - old enough for it to make a lasting impact, at least.

It'd be great to see more of The Cousins too, (including Gen, and Stenides, with or without magnificent biceps).

Do you suppose her father and brothers all died at the same time? Poor Eddis.

Rowana pointed out recently that there seem to be no mothers in the books. Are any of the characters's mothers alive?

Doesn't Costis have a living mother, as well as Father and Sister? And Mrs Erondites is still alive - Dite sent her money on his way outta town.

I had assumed Costis's mother was dead, because I couldn't remember her being mentioned in the letters (though I could be wrong here).

There does seem to be a lack of mothers in the books - Mrs Erondites may be alive, but we never actually see her. It really would be interesting to see Eddis's parents - I wonder what they were like, and what their reign was like, particularly since Eddis's was considered to transformative for the country.

Mothers tend to provide an emotional anchor (unless they're Bad Mothers, which is a different story), so if you really want your character to be in a difficult place, you off the mother.

A less calculated reason might be that we're in a world where women probably die in childbirth frequently, there have been plagues and fevers, and life in general is fairly precarious. There have also been a lot of fathers and brothers lost.

Costis' mother is dead, I think, because it says that he lives in the small house with his father and sister, Thalia. It never mentions a mother, at least.

Sophos'? He at least mentions his mother's garden and little sisters near the end of [i]The Thief[/i]... I keep thinking there was an earlier reference to her, but that would require looking. Oh, the hardship... *laughs*

well it depends on the age of Eddis because Gen might not be a baby he might be just a young child and also give us a hint to his real age.
As for what happens in the storry I am lost :)

Personally I hope that Edis' brother (or was it brothers?) is in it. I also
hope that Sophos is back but that's just my humble opinion. The thing about the fairies is good too.

Since Eddis was older than a "child" when she became queen this may take place years before that, and her father and brothers would still be alive. Gen might be around 5 or 6. *imagines naughty little Gen and his mommy*

Ooh, maybe it tells about Eddis having her nose broken by Gen's brother's practice sword.

Emerald linked me to an OLD post from when Sounis first started. Back then we talked about truffles and cyber-wine; now it's cookies and mock sangria!

That's because it's summer now, and too hot for truffles and wine. Sangria is much more a summer beverage (and cookies, of course ... I've been taking the Key Lime Shortbread ones).
