I went to the book store for a meeting and came out with copies of The Thief and QoA with their lovely new covers. And in the author notes in the back of Thief, MWT says that she likes to read anything by Diana Wynne Jones.

Then, she says that she put a direct quote from Howl's Moving Castle into The Thief as a tribute to DWJ's work. Isn't that awesome?

Cyberchocolate to the one who can spot it and report back to us!

Ok, so that one was easy for some people. Scroll down to read another challenge.

However, why do I get the feeling that you-know-who will know the answer? And no, I don't mean Lord Voldemort.

It's "What a lie that was," when he tells the innkeepers wife that the prison wasn't so bad. Howl says it when he's drunk, coming back from hanging out with his rugby buddies.

Also, for some cyber-wine to go with those chocolates ;D, if you read Rosemary Sutcliff's 'Eagle of the Ninth' (which is an extraordinary book in and of itself), Gen's carved emerald ring from the river temple shows up and plays a prominent part.

Do I win?

Damn. I spotted that a while ago but thought it was just a coincidence. :) Teach me to take author relations lightly. Well done [livejournal.com profile] fabrical_chemist :D

*wanders off to get 'Eagle of the Ninth' out of the library*

Doesn't he say 'what a lie that was' in KoA as well? When Attolia says that he was always kind to her? It could be one of Gen's favorite phrases.

I can't remember the carved emerald ring in 'Eagle of the Ninth'. Need to read that book again.

Wow, you are good! I was thinking I'd have to reread both of them to figure it out. :)

I reread specifically looking out for the DWJ tribute and still had to be told (indirectly, but MWT was the source). I'm very impressed... (I didn't hear it was a quote, which might be a tiny bit of an excuse - was distracted thinking Spellcoats and the river. Yeah, still bow to you in homage, fabricalchemist!)

Love the Eagle of the Ninth anyway - thrilled to hear this too!
