Queen and Soldier by ~DawnBluewings on deviantART
This one was in an odd mood. So she drew fanart which she would like to share and wrote a short fanfic. Which, by the way, let me know if anyone would be interested in reading.
Aaaaaand the fanfic.

Very short. About 220 words. VERY uncreative name. If anyone can think of a better one, feel free to shout out.

Date: 11/23/07 09:24 pm (UTC)Actually, it's computer-drawn (I do so love my tablet) since I'm a bit too short on cash and confidance to attempt something like this in Acrylic or - gods help me - oil. I can't do anything dark in acrylic or it goes muddy, and oil is... oil. I try not to expose myself to oil too much, as I think that I may be allurgic to turpintine (my aunt is. She was a prolific oil painter and then suddenly became allurgic....). Also, very expensive. And this wouldn't really work on watercolor. Or, rather, I'd screw it up and be out a perfectly good piece of watercolor paper and a bunch of paint.

Date: 11/23/07 02:41 pm (UTC)oh hey checkers, how did you find the book Tam Lin so far?

Date: 11/23/07 03:06 pm (UTC)On another note, I don't remember reading another book recently where the author used so many semicolons. Anyone know the current guidelines for semicolons? I thought they'd fallen out of favor, though this book was written 16 years ago.

Date: 11/23/07 03:34 pm (UTC)The book seems split into two- the only fairy-ish bits are the last 50 pages or so, although the fairy references are very subtly scattered throughout. The rest of the book tends more towards Pamela Dean.. unleashing her literary energy than it being a book about fairies in general.
I still don't know if I like the book. I was a little intimidated by all her literary references (which I had to read over and over again to understand). It was very well written, and I really liked how she managed to define humans and fairies even though most of the time the distinctions were blurred.

Date: 11/23/07 04:40 pm (UTC)Just realized I probably misinterpreted Dawn's ambiguous caption - "The lady on the right being said queen. The man who has her round the waist being... Er... an old soldier, to avoid spoilers for anyone who hasn't read these...
For those of you who do know who that is, I know that he should be slightly heavier, but it just didn't work, and I've only ever been able to picture him as a grayer version of his son, and said kid is skinny, so...."
In my defense, it's the day after Thanksgiving, I was groggy, and I spend too much time on FF.net, where any possible pairing is usually exploited at some point...apparently it's screwing up my brain to the point where I automatically jump to the weirdest possiblity. Albeit with misgivings.
Re Tam Lin - I wouldn't get your hopes up. Not much happens, and definitely no more than you would expect from the ballad. But it's just so much fun to watch nothing happen.
If you get really bored, there's an annotation site here: http://www.alittlebitofnotmuch.com/a_little_bit_of_not_much/TAD/TAD.html
Although their Tam Lin section seems to be down. It's helpful.
I've actually found that Janet is a surprisingly accurate recommendation tool...anything she likes, I tend to like as well.

Date: 11/23/07 05:47 pm (UTC)I decided from the start that the college students in Tam Lin were unlike any college students that really existed (at least where I went) and I would just enjoy them as they were. I'm liking all the allusions to the faery stuff that's going on in the background. I'll check out that link, thanks. I believe Readerville had a discussion a year or so ago; I'll look at that, too, when I'm finished.
