Cover Art!

I posted at[livejournal.com profile] judging_covers  about the King of Attolia art.

I am never at a loss for reading too much into these things, but I'm sure I missed something.

Here you can read what I found of symbolism in this picture:

I was going to post this in the other community, but then I realized I was being far too specific. So it is here. Time for me to be not dramatic at all. 8D

Gen is kneeling, and the Queen's hand rests on his shoulder probably because of it being the middle of his crowning ceremony. You can't see the top of his head because it would have a crown on it, and Gen doesn't really want to think about crowns on his head or even admit to there being one there.

The hilt is not hiding his expression - it is hiding his eyes, which is a different matter altogether. This removes his distinct identity, perhaps reflecting how Gen himself is feeling uncomfortable in his new skin. It gives the impression that he would rather be hidden... unrecognizable as king. Possibly hiding something himself, hmm? More importantly, lack of eye contact means submission, uncertainty, discomfort.

You missed a bit of the contrast within Gen's figure itself. He is clearly young, yet he holds himself proudly and has scars that show he's been around the block a few times already. Not only does his ring not quite fit as you mentioned, but his clothes look quite huge on him, and the scars and youth make him seem a bit out of place in the finery. The only thing befitting royalty about him is the determination and strength evident in his hand and posture.

On another note entirely, I am drawn to the effeminate hand because the pinky is disproportionately tiny and the index finger a bit too big, and it distracts me. (Sorry. Art student.) Also, Gen looks like he's about nine here. The artist could have given him a BIT of a chin.

I'm going to comment here instead of there, since we don't need spoiler warnings here.

I find it very apt that there are two hands on the cover--one his, which is all he has, and one hers. She is perhaps giving him her hand to make up for his that she cut off, in a metaphorical sense of hand = power hand = love but the burden of the power/love she is giving him is heavy, hence her hand pressing down on him.

I like the the title is in red letters = blood!
