Is a formal introduction in order?
Jan. 26th, 2009 10:57 pmI hope I'm not being too forward, but here goes.
Hi! I'm new to this community, I think I've stumbled upon a few times in the past (This being the best place to go for Queen's Thief related business) but I've always been too shy to post or comment.
I'm really in love with MWT and the Queen's Thief. I'm rereading the series for about the billionth time and bursting to talk to someone about it (Why won't any of my friends read it?)
So, about the upcoming book...
1. Does anyone else want to know more about the Medes? I know they're an awful country with all the wrong values, but still!
2. Will it be told from Gen's point of view?
3. Does Teleus's comment at the end of KoA, "That one [...] will rule more than just Attolia before he is done. He is an Annux, a king of kings" mean that Eugenides will rule Eddis, Attolia, and Sounis as one?
I apologize if these topics are over done, but I haven't seen them in any of the "recent" posts.

Date: 1/27/09 04:20 am (UTC)A lot of my friends doesn't even like reading books -_- much to my futile encouragements. Been trying to get my own room mate to read them, and she give me the big no no I don't read books. Well you in the right place now.
1.Getting a big feeling Mede will play a much bigger role in the upcoming book. *see mwt presents page*
2.I hope the the book in Gen's view or maybe Attolia view - that be interesting, or just third person. I really don't want a Costis limited view.
3. That a possibility but I'm lost on that one.

Date: 1/27/09 04:51 am (UTC)Since the Queen's Thief world is loosly inspired by the real world, I wonder what went into the Mede and what that says about them and their fate.

Well, I don't see how she can move her POV any further away from her "main" characters aftr KoA unless she's doing some sort of super constrained/distant third person a la Hemmingway (I think that's who I'm thinking of). Basically where all you get to see are the characters actions and none of their thoughts or motivations, so third person limited from a non-character narrator's pov. I'd imagine that she'll go back to something like the povs in QoA but she seems to pick the pov to serve the story and for the preservation of dramatic tension. She so good at it that it seems pointless to try to guess about what she'll do next. It's like throwing darts at three dartboards that you can't see and you're not even sure are in the same room.
3. Teleus' comment is totally foreshadowing. It's too deliberate not to be and when added to our knowledge that Eddis is going to be destroyed, it seems highly likely that it will become a part of either Attolia or Sounis. As for what's going to happen to Sounis... I think that's a little more up in the air. It's either stated or heavily implied that the unity of the three countries is necessary if they want to have any hope of defeating the Mede, but I wouldn't look for MWT to bring that about in any predictable way.

POV
Date: 1/27/09 11:04 am (UTC)2. I love Gen, but Costis' POV did provide me with much entertainment. I don't mind another new character's POV as long as it's done well =D
Although it is rather hard to underestimate Gen after KoA (And the underestimating-Gen is half of what's so fun about Costis' POV).

Date: 1/27/09 06:32 pm (UTC)Re: POV
Date: 1/27/09 07:00 pm (UTC)Despite that, the rampart-jumping scene near the end of KoA has become one of my favorite scenes in any book, ever. It's just so sharp, so funny, so sad; completely awesome.
Re: POV
Date: 1/27/09 09:10 pm (UTC)...I guess I love KoA so much because of all the humor. (Sorely needed after QoA's grim subject matter!)

Date: 1/27/09 02:44 pm (UTC)1. I am DESPERATE to know more about the Medes. There are so many fascinating possibilities in regard to their culture and society. For some reason, I've been wondering if they are monotheistic, since in a few other ways they seem to somewhat resemble the Islamic Turkish Empire; this might explain why they view the Attolians as "barbarians," even though they seem pretty advanced.
2. I would love to return to Gen's POV... but barring that, I would figuratively explode with glee (or at least start bouncing) if Sophos were to narrate-- and if the Medes have him, we could learn about them as well! Alternatively, I found Nahusaresh's servant Kamet potentially interesting, and I wouldn't mind him as a narrator at all.
3. I'd imagine so. What this means for Eddis does not inspire optimism on my part, however.
Thanks for the thoughtful questions!

Date: 1/27/09 04:55 pm (UTC)2. I think it's funnier, somehow, when it's not Gen's POV. Like Costis' and Relius' in KoA. Relius' take on the coin-flipping scene was one of the funniest parts on KoA, I think. :D
3. Definitely.
