[livejournal.com profile] sgwordy  's recent post about a song reminded me of a couple of songs that make me think of the Attolia books every time I hear them.

The first, Secret Heart by Ron Sexsmith, was not my idea--it was someone else's--but I really like it and even though the lyrics are about a man they seem more like Attolia while she was hiding how she felt about Eugenides in QoA.  You can read the lyrics here and listen to it on youtube here.  Pay no attention to the creepy doll, monkey and clown images.  They scare me, but maybe you are braver.  I like to focus, instead, on his lovely white shirt with its crisp collar points, for some unknown reason.

The other song is an older one by Van Morrison called I'll Be Your Lover, Too.  It's been in two movies--Proof of Life (2000) and Moonlight Mile (2002).  I had a really hard time finding it online but the lyrics and song are in this random girl's blog.  C'mon now, admit it--every word of the lyrics makes you think of Gen and Irene.   Yes, they do.

Before you go listen, promise me one little thing.  Swear that you will not...NOT...listen to Robert Pattinson do his rendition on youtube.  You'll be scrubbing your brain with acid, trust me.  It's Van you want.

Great pick on the Morrison song! That's one of my favorites by him and I never thought to make that connection but it's perfect!

The song Viva La Vida by Coldplay reminds me of Gen when I hear it, especially the one verse that goes:

Revolutionaries wait
For my head on a silver plate
Just a puppet on a lonely string
Oh who would ever want to be king?

The last two lines are really the best, but most of the song can apply if you think about it.

viva la vida, and Gen

yes, and

It was the wicked and wild wind
Blew down the doors to let me in
Shattered windows and the sound of drums
People couldn't believe what I'd become

Yeah, I actually found that song because someone pointed out the QT parallels. And now it's my favorite song OF ALL TIME.

Can I remind everyone of Black Roses Red? PR pointed it out last time, and she's right. It is SO Attolia it's not even funny.

Those lyrics for Black Roses Red were perfect! Also, Coldplay (and that song) get a ton of radio time where I live right now but I had never actually paid attention to the lyrics until seeing them mentioned here. Now I love to hear the song...which is probably good because I have to hear it about 3-4 times/day. :)
