Date: 4/21/09 03:47 pm (UTC)I love how Pol is rugged and stoic, and Ambiades is sneering but still good-looking. Also, actual clothes using the actual descriptions!

I like the anime influence with the big eyes. If your friend is drawing fan art for the book, she must have liked The Thief. I'm glad.
Pol looks a bit young, though. Was he suppose to be older or was he a young man? I can't decide.
I really like Sophos. He reminds me of the character Elk from dot Hack. Does anyone else who has ever played that game or read the novel see it too?

Date: 4/22/09 04:42 am (UTC)I checked - there are several bloggers who have 'soji' on their interests. You could get them together and start a comm!!!
I chose Soji because he's the only one I can remember and he's hot, but I DO know who the others are. Just not by name. The book is very good.
And then you can post arts like this on your blog!! You SAID yourself you wanted a blog. I SAW you say that on Deviantart.

Date: 4/22/09 05:49 am (UTC)You should certainly join Sounis once you finish "The Queen of Attolia" and "The King of Attolia". You're friend has been working really hard to get you to read the books and join. She told me all about it on my first post (I believe she said she e-mailed that one to you). She formulated a 6 or 7 step "Plan of Attack" to put into use (sorry if I'm giving you away here, the last Eddis). The last step was to get you to join Sounis, and I hope you consider it. It's a lot of fun.
Also, since I hear you are interested in Japanese media, there is a lot of comms dedicated to anime and manga on Livejournal. There are many different things to look into.

Date: 4/22/09 06:02 am (UTC)(I had the same reaction. But don't kill my friend, I love her very much despite this strange mutation)
Thus, I though I should warn her that there was an even more... secret-ish secret at the end of QoA. That put her off a little.
Ah well.

Date: 4/22/09 06:19 am (UTC)But the surprise ending's the best part, and makes the whole story.
I really like how Mrs. Turner did it. It was good way for her to introduce readers to Gen, because one realizes that even though Gen was your eyes and ears in the story you really know very little about him without even realizing it. It's just how Costis describes it. Gen can hide something so well that you don't even think to look for it even though you know it has to be there.
Does G just not like surprise endings, maybe?

Date: 4/22/09 06:50 am (UTC)Although, we find at end of "The Thief" Gen was hiding something from us, this, in a way, tells us who he is. Gen lived his whole life in secrets and seclusion, because of his title. He unconsciously hides things even from those he is closet to, because it was deemed necessary for him. When we see that Gen can hide his identity, even from someone who is essentially "him" in a story, it gives us true sense of what he can do. When I read the book, this caused me to become more interested in him; and to want to learn more about him. He's an enigma, and a fansinating character. If Gen had not kept his identity a secrect, we may have never realized who he truly is.
Now, isn't that a twisted way to think.

Date: 4/23/09 01:00 am (UTC)It's sort of like the 'what would have happened if Attolia had said NO in QoA' question that haunts me at night - I think if she had been the kind of person who would say no, Gen wouldn't have fallen in love with her. I think a huge part of his love for her was the self-sacrificing part of her that did what was best for her country, despite believing it would be worse for herself (she didn't realize she loved him yet).

Date: 4/23/09 01:45 am (UTC)I know if had read The Thief when I was a few years younger, I might have thought I had been cheated out of something by the surprise twist. I felt more secure with books when I could guess the general direction of the ending, but now I like novels that engross my thought process much more.
But... Who knows. The books will be around for a very long time as will Sounis, and G may eventually change her mind.
We can hope TLE (yah, I remembered to use that).

THERE WILL BE A BUNCH OF COCKROACHES TALKING ABOUT QT.
AND WALL-E (who is a huge Irene fan, btw)

Date: 4/23/09 01:57 am (UTC)Yes, TLE. Sounis will last forever.
You must really like Wall-E. You talk about it all the time.

Date: 4/23/09 05:04 am (UTC)BECAUSE WALL-E IS A PARAGON OF AWESOMENESS AND LOVE AND PERFECTION
Long, critic answer (feel free not to read):
As a movie-enthusiast I think Wall-E is the beginning of something wonderful. It's beautiful artistically (think of the space ballet), and sort of sums up a lot of advances in CGI that were (and still are) being wasted on cartoonish, unoriginal movies. It also has some themes that are very relevant to things going on right now, which I love. My history class is arts-based, so that we're looking at events and their causes through that time's artistic reactions - I get the feeling Wall-E could be analyzed like that by future generations. And I think that's wicked. Finally, Wall-E was the first movie of the Pixar/Disney alliance. Which is great, because Pixar can make the great movies I love and Disney can do all the money-giving and advertising they're so good at. Don't get me wrong, I love Disney - but recently their movies have lacked inspiration. I gave a blow-by-blow account of why-wall-e-is-awesome on my blog - where I apparently became one of many to suggest Wall-E/QT parallels.
