...but I wish they were.

Because I've been trying to draw these guys for a while, and I've been failing. Luckily, my friend G, who I just got to read TT, is fantabulous and drew me a picture after she finished it. Thought I'd post it for y'all. :-)

Isn't Sophos the cutest thing??!!

Could this be Kaze Hikaru? (It means Shining Wind.) I read a few volumes of that a while ago.

The era it takes place in was a very changing time for Japan as its government and religious foundations shook at the roots. The Shinsengumi, you read about, was a famous military police force that was founded to counteract violence in Kyoto, Japan's capital at the time.
"Shinsen" means "the new chosen ones" and "gumi" means group. They were founded to give strength to the Japanese military dictator ,the shogun; and fought for him in the revolution instigated by the Emperor Meji. That revolution lasted about 10 years, and marked the end of the Tokugawa Era and the beginning of the Meji republican government. The Shisengumi was destroyed during the revolution, but remains a popular topic in Japanese period dramas.

You can trust all the historical details in Kaze Hikaru. It was very well researched. (I love history, in case you haven't realized. Notice username.)

If you like Kaze Hikaru you should try Ruroni Kenshin. It takes place in the Meji Era. A few years after the times in Kaze Hikaru, and personally I like it better. BTW, I'm not trying to force you to be manga fan. It's your choose.

Oh, and don't worry about remembering the names. I've read manga with American characters and the Japanese characters can't remember their English names. It's an internationally problem. You'll get used to it after a while.

I know. Isn't Japanese history fascinating. I've even for some strange reason begun reading "The Tale of Genji".

I first got interested in the Meji and Tokagawa Eras when I watched the Ruroni Kenshin anime. I've since then done a bit of reading particularly on the Shinsengumi.

Is your favorite manga "Kaze Hikaru"? Mine is "Beauty Pop".

*Uses Kiri Koshiba icon to prove it*

Edward G. Seidensticker's translation from Tut books. It's a two volume set each 500 pages long. I wonder why I subject myself to these tomes. Hmm...

You have the kanji Sei in your icon. That means sincerity.

Cute.

Seidensticker's is the best translation. I didn't get thorugh Arthur Waley's.

can that character be read "Sei"? it's on the Shinsengumi flag, and I know it as "makoto".

Yes, that kanji can be pronounced both as "Sei" or "Makoto". My kanji dictionary says that "Sei" is the most common pronounciation.

I didn't know there was a Shinsengumi flag. The holes in my historical knowledge are made clear. Thank you for informing me.

I know I'm late to the party (it's getting to be a theme) but no-one'd picked up on your username. Nine days a Queen - is it Lady Jane Grey?

Yes!

Finally, there is someone besides me who knows who Lady Jane Grey is.The Tudor Era is probably my greatest English historical obsession. I've written several papers about it.

I picked Lady Jane Grey historical nickname (The Nine-days Queen), because I think she was one the most fascinating and tragic players in the Tudor court drama. She had an outstanding intellect and strong will which has never been celebrated being remembered only as the long-suffering, innocent traitor with the shortest reign in English history.

I phrased it the way I did, because of my favorite historical novel about her "Nine Days a Queen: The Short Life and Reign of Lady Jane Grey" by Ann Rinaldi.

"history fangirls"

lol

Yes, I would be; but sadly I could offer you no help with the tech end. If there is one thing I am not, it is computer savvy. I would probably post on it all the time though. Soji could join.

How about History_Otaku: A Haven For History Fanatics. Otaku means someone who is obsessed with something and it's none gender specific.

Yes, you do get a say in the dust leaving.

You're right about not everyone getting Otaku. Maybe History_Haven: World History from Ancient to Modern...

I typed history into the search engine, and I was surprised there are not that many history comms. Most of them are just interested in particular eras, or are for history college students.

I would like this to be a place where anyone feels welcome even if they aren't versed in historical facts. Lots of people watch the history channel and might like to ask questions of more versed members. We should also encourage cultural discussions.

You would like to go with History_Haven then? Good because I like it too. Rubles is from Zelda right?

Sounds good. In the meantime we can to find members.

Oh, Rubles. Somehow my brain super-empossed Rubies. I believe it's Rubies in Zelda.

Yes, that true we should wait a bit, but we can notify the people we already talk to a lot on Sounis like TA.
