...but I wish they were.
Because I've been trying to draw these guys for a while, and I've been failing. Luckily, my friend G, who I just got to read TT, is fantabulous and drew me a picture after she finished it. Thought I'd post it for y'all. :-)
Isn't Sophos the cutest thing??!!

Date: 4/23/09 10:02 am (UTC)The era it takes place in was a very changing time for Japan as its government and religious foundations shook at the roots. The Shinsengumi, you read about, was a famous military police force that was founded to counteract violence in Kyoto, Japan's capital at the time.
"Shinsen" means "the new chosen ones" and "gumi" means group. They were founded to give strength to the Japanese military dictator ,the shogun; and fought for him in the revolution instigated by the Emperor Meji. That revolution lasted about 10 years, and marked the end of the Tokugawa Era and the beginning of the Meji republican government. The Shisengumi was destroyed during the revolution, but remains a popular topic in Japanese period dramas.
You can trust all the historical details in Kaze Hikaru. It was very well researched. (I love history, in case you haven't realized. Notice username.)
If you like Kaze Hikaru you should try Ruroni Kenshin. It takes place in the Meji Era. A few years after the times in Kaze Hikaru, and personally I like it better. BTW, I'm not trying to force you to be manga fan. It's your choose.
Oh, and don't worry about remembering the names. I've read manga with American characters and the Japanese characters can't remember their English names. It's an internationally problem. You'll get used to it after a while.
OMG from G

Date: 4/27/09 06:22 am (UTC)I first got interested in the Meji and Tokagawa Eras when I watched the Ruroni Kenshin anime. I've since then done a bit of reading particularly on the Shinsengumi.
Is your favorite manga "Kaze Hikaru"? Mine is "Beauty Pop".

Cute.
Re: OMG from G
Date: 4/29/09 05:50 am (UTC)can that character be read "Sei"? it's on the Shinsengumi flag, and I know it as "makoto".
Re: OMG from G
Date: 4/29/09 08:59 am (UTC)I didn't know there was a Shinsengumi flag. The holes in my historical knowledge are made clear. Thank you for informing me.

Date: 4/27/09 12:08 pm (UTC)Finally, there is someone besides me who knows who Lady Jane Grey is.The Tudor Era is probably my greatest English historical obsession. I've written several papers about it.
I picked Lady Jane Grey historical nickname (The Nine-days Queen), because I think she was one the most fascinating and tragic players in the Tudor court drama. She had an outstanding intellect and strong will which has never been celebrated being remembered only as the long-suffering, innocent traitor with the shortest reign in English history.
I phrased it the way I did, because of my favorite historical novel about her "Nine Days a Queen: The Short Life and Reign of Lady Jane Grey" by Ann Rinaldi.

Date: 4/29/09 04:23 am (UTC)Hmmmm, interesting idea. I know a lot of people on livejournal who are interesting in history, but not in the lots-of-essays-and-assignments way. You know, more of a heated-dicussion-and-historical-fiction sort of way. It gave me the idea - what if we started a comm? we could be the 'history fangirls' or something. Would you be interested if there was such a comm?

Yes, I would be; but sadly I could offer you no help with the tech end. If there is one thing I am not, it is computer savvy. I would probably post on it all the time though. Soji could join.

Date: 4/30/09 03:38 am (UTC)Hmm, I bet we could get soji, and maybe TA, and then there's you and me, so that's four right off the bat. This is definately doable!!! I can't get it started right now, I'm way too busy, but I'll get it started up as soon as I have less homework. Maybe a month or two.

Date: 5/1/09 03:36 am (UTC)You're right about not everyone getting Otaku. Maybe History_Haven: World History from Ancient to Modern...
I typed history into the search engine, and I was surprised there are not that many history comms. Most of them are just interested in particular eras, or are for history college students.
I would like this to be a place where anyone feels welcome even if they aren't versed in historical facts. Lots of people watch the history channel and might like to ask questions of more versed members. We should also encourage cultural discussions.

Date: 5/1/09 03:40 am (UTC)I agree with everything you said about what the comm should be. This is going to be oodles of fun!!! I really want to start right now... but I have so much to do... DANG IT. Ah well... Don't worry, it will be up and running soon!

Date: 5/1/09 03:52 am (UTC)I like History_Haven a lot... We should wait to do much member-recruiting until it's actually up... we'll keep a lot more that way. :-)

Date: 5/1/09 04:02 am (UTC)Yes, that true we should wait a bit, but we can notify the people we already talk to a lot on Sounis like TA.
