Date: 4/21/09 03:47 pm (UTC)I love how Pol is rugged and stoic, and Ambiades is sneering but still good-looking. Also, actual clothes using the actual descriptions!

Date: 4/21/09 10:32 pm (UTC)Kawaii!
I like the anime influence with the big eyes. If your friend is drawing fan art for the book, she must have liked The Thief. I'm glad.
Pol looks a bit young, though. Was he suppose to be older or was he a young man? I can't decide.
I really like Sophos. He reminds me of the character Elk from dot Hack. Does anyone else who has ever played that game or read the novel see it too?

Date: 4/22/09 04:42 am (UTC)I checked - there are several bloggers who have 'soji' on their interests. You could get them together and start a comm!!!
I chose Soji because he's the only one I can remember and he's hot, but I DO know who the others are. Just not by name. The book is very good.
And then you can post arts like this on your blog!! You SAID yourself you wanted a blog. I SAW you say that on Deviantart.

Date: 4/23/09 10:02 am (UTC)The era it takes place in was a very changing time for Japan as its government and religious foundations shook at the roots. The Shinsengumi, you read about, was a famous military police force that was founded to counteract violence in Kyoto, Japan's capital at the time.
"Shinsen" means "the new chosen ones" and "gumi" means group. They were founded to give strength to the Japanese military dictator ,the shogun; and fought for him in the revolution instigated by the Emperor Meji. That revolution lasted about 10 years, and marked the end of the Tokugawa Era and the beginning of the Meji republican government. The Shisengumi was destroyed during the revolution, but remains a popular topic in Japanese period dramas.
You can trust all the historical details in Kaze Hikaru. It was very well researched. (I love history, in case you haven't realized. Notice username.)
If you like Kaze Hikaru you should try Ruroni Kenshin. It takes place in the Meji Era. A few years after the times in Kaze Hikaru, and personally I like it better. BTW, I'm not trying to force you to be manga fan. It's your choose.
Oh, and don't worry about remembering the names. I've read manga with American characters and the Japanese characters can't remember their English names. It's an internationally problem. You'll get used to it after a while.

Date: 4/22/09 05:49 am (UTC)You should certainly join Sounis once you finish "The Queen of Attolia" and "The King of Attolia". You're friend has been working really hard to get you to read the books and join. She told me all about it on my first post (I believe she said she e-mailed that one to you). She formulated a 6 or 7 step "Plan of Attack" to put into use (sorry if I'm giving you away here, the last Eddis). The last step was to get you to join Sounis, and I hope you consider it. It's a lot of fun.
Also, since I hear you are interested in Japanese media, there is a lot of comms dedicated to anime and manga on Livejournal. There are many different things to look into.

Date: 4/22/09 06:02 am (UTC)(I had the same reaction. But don't kill my friend, I love her very much despite this strange mutation)
Thus, I though I should warn her that there was an even more... secret-ish secret at the end of QoA. That put her off a little.
Ah well.

Date: 4/22/09 06:19 am (UTC)But the surprise ending's the best part, and makes the whole story.
I really like how Mrs. Turner did it. It was good way for her to introduce readers to Gen, because one realizes that even though Gen was your eyes and ears in the story you really know very little about him without even realizing it. It's just how Costis describes it. Gen can hide something so well that you don't even think to look for it even though you know it has to be there.
Does G just not like surprise endings, maybe?

Date: 4/22/09 06:50 am (UTC)Although, we find at end of "The Thief" Gen was hiding something from us, this, in a way, tells us who he is. Gen lived his whole life in secrets and seclusion, because of his title. He unconsciously hides things even from those he is closet to, because it was deemed necessary for him. When we see that Gen can hide his identity, even from someone who is essentially "him" in a story, it gives us true sense of what he can do. When I read the book, this caused me to become more interested in him; and to want to learn more about him. He's an enigma, and a fansinating character. If Gen had not kept his identity a secrect, we may have never realized who he truly is.
Now, isn't that a twisted way to think.
