Ok, so I've been meaning to make a small comic or something for a while, seeing as it's been a few years since my last attempt...
(which failed. Miserably.)

The main purpose is to hopefully get better at drawing scenes and different poses and, of course, have a lot of teeth-gnashing, laughing, cursing fun. ^_^
So, while in search of something to make a comic about, I saw my copy of The Thief lying innocently on the desk.

As with all fanart, this is merely my interpretation of them, please don't eat me  TT_TT.
I really hope you like it, and you're my editors by the way, please tell me if anything needs to be changed as this is still the rough draft. I just realised I'm rambling, so, onwards!
Sorry about the mother of all watermarks...

No. Stealing. I eat stealers for breakfast. (Except Gen, of course.)

P.S - I am currently repeatedly headdesking because the LJ cut wont work. Please tell me what I could be doing wrong...

I must say, you draw the characters very well. This was one of my favorite scenes in the Thief. Especially the line about burning (?) the chair. Or was that washing...I haven't read the Thief in quite some time. I just loved how you made a close up of Gen as he says "I can steal anything" it would make the perfect camera shot if ever there was a movie.

I could imagine it too...if not the Magus then Sounis would probably be the one burning it :)).

Hmm if ever there was a background for that scene wouldn't it be mostly shadow and soft outlines of certain items...it was pretty dark, but I wouldn't know. I'm not an artist of any kind (unless you count photoshop).

Oh, I LOVE this! Keep going! I can't wait to see it when you have more done.

I think the Magus said "clean" then at the end when Gen is in bed recovering, he tells the Magus he'll have to "burn" but I could be entirely wrong and am too lazy to go check.

Oh my god, YAY. I love your art and Gen looks just like I imagined him! <3

You are good: love it!

And man, I have not gotten over that animation icon, either. SO CUTE!
(Is that one stealable, if credited?)

Nicely done. :D

Only thing: You might want to up the contrast a little. It's a bit faint.

You drew this great scene wonderfully! I LOVE Gen's expressions. And seeing that line about his "intelligence." It's like, Ooh, Magus, if you only knew that in a few short weeks(?) you will be eating those words SO HARD!

Thanks for sharing.

I agree with [livejournal.com profile] rosalui, though. It's so faint it's a little hard to see.

Woot! This was great (it also really makes me want to see the series turned into an anime mini-series). I especially liked the way you drew Gen! The one thing I would quibble with is the magus looks too young. I think he should be at least middle-aged and maybe have a heavier build.

I agree. Older.

I do love the way you planned the panels, too. It all flows well.

That was also my one complaint. So fun! You planning to have it colored soon?

Well, as far as book references go, the only one I can pinpoint for sure is p. 9, where it talks about his nose, eye color, and wrinkles. (But you probably already have this passage, since it's in the middle of the scene you're drawing.) For some reason, I always imagine him with a beard, but I also seem to recollect a scene where he's shaving, so the beard might have been all me. He's also described as a powerful soldier (I don't have the page number), so that always made me think his build must be on the larger side, especially compared to Gen.

I guess I imagine him something like Sean Connery in First Knight.

Or maybe R'as al Ghul.

Hope that helps!

And, since I've decided I have no shame: I posted a new fic! Everybody read it!

Ohfrickin'BOY!!!

(But fix the spelling of "Thief" in the character credit at the end.)

LJ cuts are a PITA. They don't go over [div]s, which includes indented stuff the way LJ does it. I don't know just what you were trying, but if you put in an image and then put just it in a cut, it should (I hope) work.

Oooo... I love graphic novels (manga more specifically), consequentially I love this. I assume it is drawn in soft pencil, because it is a rough draft. If you are planning on touching this up and drawing more (I beg you, please do), I would also recommend darkening the lines. On a computer it is very difficult to see lines drawn in soft pencil. I can't see the first few panels at all.

I love how you are one of those artists that understands too much detail in the background distracts from the characters and story. That is the issue with most American graphic novels. Same with how you zoom in on what is important, and change perspective. Nice touch!

One thing I will say, is that I see you are going with the more squared out and blockish panel layout of American graphic novels. Personally, I prefer how the panels bleed in to one another and off the border as they do in manga. That's just my personally preference, and I do understand how much work and planning panel layout takes.

I'm not not one to talk, because I'm not an artist.

I assume your user-name is a tribute to "Full Metal Alchemist" as well as "The Thief"?

First of all, this response is shamefully late. I'm not even sure why exactly. Much apologizes.

*does a dogeza*

Sorry for not being completely clear. I'm talking about how in manga, a character's feet can sometimes dangle into another panel, or a character can be featured on the division border between two panels, flanking the character for effect. You do it once towards the end, where the magus's head is slightly in the panel above the one he is actually feature in.

Again, that is just my personal preference. They way you are already arranging the panels is perfectly clear and flowing. I'm just being annoying.

*gets a strange image of Gen shouting, "It's alive. It's alive"*

*shudders*

OH MY GOSH THE MAGUS HAS MY NOSE.

No seriously. In that big close up of him on page 7, that is MY NOSE.

This is so much win - I love Gen's stance, especially when he says, 'some things take time'. Hee hee, I love Gen. He's so cute in TT.

Whoops, sorry about your drink. O_o

Well, that's one more person I can add to my list of people who have my nose - Helen, Ortiz, Snape, Ceasar, and now the Magus. It's a popular nose.

One of my favorite scenes! I love that Gen's falling off his bed when they take him from prison and I *love* Gen's expression when he says, "I suppose not."

Same quibble as some of the others: the Magus looks too young. Otherwise, I'm looking forward to seeing it in its more advanced and colored stages. :)

I think the shape of his face is alright, but maybe adding some lines around his eyes might help. He's a scholar, and a soldier, so he's bound to have spent a lot of time squinting. ;)

Oh, and it would be good to have a bit of a gap before the Magus says 'never mind'. It reads a bit too hurriedly. Perhaps a textless scene with him eyeing the thief with distaste...

Either way, it's a really brilliant start. =)
