[identity profile] katewaits.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] queensthief
Several posts have brought up comments that include, "when I came to _____, I just _____, and then I ____ ..." or a variation of that.  I always find those comments so interesting.  Sort of a "where were you when ..." thing.

So, just pulling some major scenes out of the series, I'd love to know what your thoughts were at those moments.  Disbelief, utter sadness, anger, hilarity, "I knew it!" or whathaveyou.  And did you have any trouble keeping those spoilers to yourself (I find that's the hardest thing -- that's why I just give someone a book and say 'don't read the back just read the book' and go away).

Moments that made you go ... :

1.  "The Thief":  finding out Ambiades had betrayed them and he and Pol had been killed.

2.  "The Thief":  finding out Gen was that Eugenides and that he had kept the Gift.

3.  "Queen of Attolia":  THAT SCENE, aka "Chop Chop"  (we've read a lot of people's reactions, but some haven't weighed in yet and I don't mind rereading others).

4.  "Queen of Attolia":  when Gen tells Irene he loves her the first time.

5.  "King of Attolia":  the assassination attempt.

6.  "King of Attolia":  the destruction of House Erondites.

7.  "King of Attolia":  "GO TO BED"

Okay, those are just a few.  If there is one I haven't mentioned that pops out whenever you think of a specific book, please just go with it.  I found it was hard to narrow down my favorite moments, so I just went with some that seemed to be "set pieces".

1. I think I was surprised... not terribly shocked or anything, but still surprised, and I thought it was kind of sad that Pol was dead.

2. THIS was probably my most 'OMG WUT' moment of the series. Because I first read The Thief on a trip, where I only really had time to read it right before I went to bed. So I was kind of just lying there in bed, reading along, doop-dee-doop, and then I got to that part, and I was just completely blown away. I had NO idea, haha. I probably stared at the page and read it over a few times. And that's when I decided that this book was TOTALLY AWESOME. XD

3. I actually didn't have as dramatic a reaction as a lot of the people here. In fact, if anything, I thought it was cool. I like it when writers put their characters through bad things, it makes the story more interesting. So I was excited to see what would happen next, now that Eugenides had lost a hand because of the Queen of Attolia.

4. I think at first I didn't really believe him. And then kind of believed him, but just didn't like it. Because I really didn't like Attolia until... well, I'll talk about that.

5. It was just a great scene.

6. Utter and complete glee. I cannot even describe how much I love that entire scene. It's just... spectacular.

7. This one was almost as spectacular as the last one.

Another twist: in QoA, when the Attolian army joins forces with Eddis, and you find out that Attolia has just been screwing with Nahuseresh the whole time. I almost hated Attolia right up till then, but when that happened, I was like... "I LOVE THIS WOMAN."

Oh, and when Eugenides steals the Magus. That was pretty amazing as well.

Delurking with a comment!

1. Way back years ago when Gen was all like "AND I've been working for Eddis the whole time. Nyah nyah nyah." made me go WTF and re-read that bit a few times.

2. In 'QoA' when Gen and Irene are walking up that long flight of stairs after the boat ride and he's teasing her is a favorite part of mine. The part where he bleated like a goat at her made me LOL.

3. It might have just been the situation I was in at the time, but I was rereading KoA while I was in a rocky, dysfunctional relationship and all the little tidbits of Gen and Irene's marriage made me laugh, cringe, lol, and go 'aaawww'.

1. Noooo!!! (but not too surprised. They were in a dungeon when I read this. Something obviously went wrong. Thus, only a minor stage of shock.)

2. What???!!!! But Eu-whatever's... political! Gen can't be, he's too, it's not... oh.

3. That was not Gen. What? It was!?! NOOOOOO!!!!! etc., etc.,... well that was an interesting twist... poor Gen!

4. Well, I believe you... sort of. Wait, WHAT DID YOU JUST SAY???!!! Are you MAD???!?

5. Cool! That's it, your highness, you beat those bad guys up! I know you won't die! Yay for you! Maybe now that guard-guy will decide you're...

6. Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes! But I'm not surprised. Go Gen! Only you can make know-it-alls speechless with envy...(I admit, not really in the scene)

7. Hee hee! That's it, you show him! *giggles incoherently*

*goes into fangirl craze*
*apologizes to everyone else*

1. I was surprised. I knew Ambiades was awful, but I never thought he'd betray them, and Pol...well, I wanted to cry.

2. I goggled. I went back and reread the entire book so that I could catch the little things I'd missed out on and thought I was so stupid for having missed them.

3. Shut the book and stared at it, reread the scene, then ranted on my LJ to my beautiful friend [livejournal.com profile] cyberskiver who introduced me to the series.

4. Again, shock, because there is no indication of it beforehand and it sort of comes out of the blue. But then you're like, "Well, that makes sense..."

5. I fell in love with Costis right then. When he was running back to Gen, praying that he's alive, and finds him, and...no spoilers, but it was lovely, and I had much appreciation for both of them.

6. It was just plain awesome.

7. I LOLed so hard I thought I would die. It was epic.

Definitely the scene where Gen goes to visit Relius in the dungeon in KoA was the scene that shocked me the most. It was just so intense and I loved how you never knew exactly what Gen was thinking - was he going to take revenge, or was he going to forgive and move on? Also, Relius is one of my favorite characters, so I loved it when Gen spared him and I hope he's in the next book!! :D

That was a fantastic scene, and while I didn't think Eugenides was going to do anything too awful, I was on the edge of my seat the whole time.

I love the subsequent interactions between Eugenides and Relius, too.

I hope he's in the next book!!

Given that Sophos turns up, I'm betting Relius finally gets his chance to talk scholarly stuff with the magus!

2. "The Thief": finding out Gen was that Eugenides

Complete shock. But I'm notoriously bad at seeing these things coming.

and that he had kept the Gift.

Actually, I was suspicious about that part at least.

3. "Queen of Attolia": THAT SCENE.

Before I started reading, I had actually realized that what I had first seen as a bottle on the cover was really a hook -- and knowing that amputation is a traditional punishment for theft, I had a feeling this was coming. When it actually happened, I felt both horror ... and curiosity about what Eugenides was going to do next!

4. "Queen of Attolia": when Gen tells Irene he loves her the first time.

I have to admit it: Complete disbelief, as in, "where did this come from?!" And I was a little miffed that we were all of a sudden supposed to accept that Eugenides had watched/loved Attolia for years. Until I reminded myself that this was no dirtier a trick on MWT's part than, say, most of The Thief. Then I managed to settle down and keep reading. ;)

5. "King of Attolia": the assassination attempt.

The assassins surprised me as much as they surprised Costis, heh. But I think I may have been on my feet cheering (okay, not literally) for that entire sequence, up to "next time I think I'll go on upsetting my physician" (pardon the paraphrase). One of my favorite parts of the entire series.

8. And picking up [livejournal.com profile] sandtree's addition: in QoA, when the Attolian army joins forces with Eddis, and you find out that Attolia has just been screwing with Nahuseresh the whole time.

Gave me a 180-degree perspective shift on Attolia -- and made me like her for the first time (I'd been kind of sympathetic before, but I hadn't liked her). And made me go back and reread the entire abduction/battle sequence again -- here I'd thought she was only wearing the ruby earrings to torment Eugenides further!

she was only wearing the ruby earrings to torment Eugenides further!

Really? I took that as a clue that she was having Nahuseresh on, which, admittedly, might have been me hoping that she wouldn't have the heart to torment Eugenides further. And then the very odd message she sent with "the old soldier"... I had hope at that point. ;)

Especially when Helen noticed the one-eyebrow lift that Gen had "stolen" from Irene. XD

Oh, yeah, that made me laugh so hard.

One moment that I just love and that I turn to every once in a while just to go *sniff* is the Minister of War nudging another aside to pick Gen up and carry him in after the Attolians have brought him back in QofA. *sniffs* there I go again.

Yes, yes, YES, I was about to cry while I was reading that.

5. "King of Attolia": the assassination attempt.

6. "King of Attolia": the destruction of House Erondites.

7. "King of Attolia": "GO TO BED"

All awesome parts. From KoA, I'd add the part near the end where Costis spins around to see Eugenides in the air, about to knock the **** out of Teleus. Also, "I CAN DO ANYTHING I WANT!"

Oh, almost forgot, the entire scene when Teleus/Aris are on "trial."

From QoA, I love the part in the beginning when Eugenides throws himself off the palace, across the street.

Oh, fun! I like this idea.

1) I was in bed. I mean, naturally I was sad that Pol died and glad that Ambiades had gotten his just deserts, but mostly I was still pretty confused, because I didn't know why Gen wasn't Eugenides - since I read QoA first. But besides that there's not much to mention.

2) Still in bed. This was a "*sigh* oh, of course..." moment, plus I was very excited because Helen was back.

3) In a plane on the way to Maine. I gasped loud enough to make everyone within three rows jump, and then started stuttering nonsense. Something like, "she... but.. what? they're supposed to.. and... mom? she just... dude... *keeps reading*"

4) By this point I was in Maine. I had gotten sick almost immediately after getting there, so I spent most of my time sitting in bed reading the book. I seem to remember being curled up in a ball, ignoring everyone who came into the room.

5) Oh, this I remember very clearly. Once again, I was in bed, and it was something like eleven thirty at night. I looked over at the clock, and told myself the next gap I got to I'd stop. What was the next gap? yeah. It was right as the assasins stepped out from the bushes. :-P

6) ...I think I was at school? I don't remember this one very well. I'm adding an eight option to make up for my lame memory.

7) In bed, ironically. :-P I think mostly I wasn't thinking much by this point... letting myself be carried along for the ride. You only read it for the first time once.

8) Alright, here's the one I'm adding - when Gen visits Relius in the prison. Here you are:

Teacher: it's time for break!
TLE: *grabs book, runs outside to woods, sits on log*
CT: TLE? where are you?
TLE: I'm-right-here-go-away.
CT: Uh, TLE?
TLE: *sniff* seriously, how is it possible to be reading this scene and feel sorry for the king? shouldn't I feel sorry for, you know, the guy in the cell?! Only Megan Whalen Turner could do this...
CT: ...what are these books again?
TLE: *brightens* they're called the queen's thief books and they're awesome you should totally read them I'll bring in the first one tomorrow kthanxbai!!

Date: 7/21/09 12:44 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] thelasteddis.livejournal.com
3) Wait, I fail. That wasn't in the plane. I was already in maine, sitting in bed. I yelped, closed the book, and stared with wide eyes at the cover for a full minute. Then I ran downstairs and stammered at my mom.

1: Don't remember my specific reaction besides being sad about Pol and way angry at Ambiades. Worthless jerk!!

2: I was out of state for a friend's wedding and staying with some other friends; I'd read most of The Thief on the plane, and was sitting reading the last few pages on the couch, and I was like... WHAT?? And had to read it again. And then I was like OH MY GOSH AWESOME! THIS BOOK ROCKS EVEN MORE THAN I THOUGHT!! And then I made my friends take me to a bookstore so's I could get the next book.

3: Oh my goodness. THAT SCENE. At first I didn't even quite realize it had actually happened. I was SO traumatized. I read it again. I was even more traumatized. HOLY CRAP SHE JUST CUT OFF HIS *HAND*!!! Whoa. WHOA.

4: SO WEIRD BUT AWESOME AND, strangely ... aww

5: *phew* I KNEW Eugenides had to still be awesome. Awesome.

6: Hahahahaha SQUEEEE!!!!!!!

7: Eugenides, you are awesome. You are the only person in existence that a god would tell to "Stop whining" and "Go to bed." One of the many reasons I love you. :-)

****sigh**** Just finished reading this series for the fourth time today. SO MUCH LOVE. I think it's awesome that all of the above mentioned parts still pretty much evoke the same reaction as the first time around. The sad thing about it is, I've read and re-read these so many times, that the first time is just an extremely vague and happy memory.

I do remember my first reaction to 3. ("Chop Chop") I was just dazed. The Attolian palace was not very well developed in my head, and it was just a vaguely dark, dreary, awful place, the principle piece of which was a room with a chair, and a fire, and blood. I couldn't cry for Gen, or anything, because I was so D:

The first time I read King was in One sitting and I positively rushed through it, it only took be a few hours. Individual scenes don't really stick out. My basic reaction was "DUDE THAT WAS TOTALLY AWESOME... so, what just happened?"

Date: 7/21/09 03:37 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] rosaleeluann.livejournal.com
I've been thinking, and I do sort of remember my first thoughts on the assasination attempt. Megan lets you be so relieved, when Costis gets there and the king is fine... then Costis sees the blood, and the bodies, but it doesn't say whose.... I'm pretty sure I was holding my breath thinking, "No, No, No, No, NO!" until it said, It wasn't the kings blood. It wasn't the kings body.

Speaking of, I absolutely loved reading that part to my roommate. I did my very best to enhance through my reading the fear, the relief, and the WAIT HOLY CRAP WUT? NO! of that scene. When I read, "And then the assasins stepped into view" she pretty much vaulted off the couch, screaming "WHAT??"

Haha. Ah, good times. Good times.

I honestly cannot answer this re: my initial reading of the books. It's been SO LONG, and also, for years the only book I reread on a consistent basis was QoA. I don't remember the first time I read TT, and I only have some memory of my first read of QoA because I wrote a book review of it. My first memory of KoA is a source of some shame for me, because I spent the entire book torn between "WHERE IS MAH GEN POV" and "OMG GEN ARE YOU OKAY WHY ARE YOU BEING SO CRAZY" because lo, my faith, it was lacking. (And then when it became clear that Gen was perfectly fine, I uh, was so confused as to what was going on that I didn't totally grasp all the threads of connection for the rest of the book. XD) Since I reread TT and QoA recently, I'll try to go off my reactions this time around...

1. POL. I DON'T WANT HIM TO BE DEAD. I feel ya, Sophos.

2. The first time I read TT, having read QoA first, I spent the entire novel wondering if he had amnesia. When I got to this point, I was disappointed, because I thought amnesia would have been an interesting plot. ...it wasn't until later that I realized that, uh, if you hadn't been spoiled for who he was, the revelation itself was a PRETTY DARN BIG PLOT TWIST.

...so I was disappointed, actually, the first time I read that scene. XD

3. I pretty much want to cry every time I read this scene, but mostly for the bits right before (the scene where she doesn't hang him) and after ("please don't hurt me anymore") because omg my babies, I love them. I think when I first read it, I was like "oh, that's interesting/different/what happens next."

4. "...saybwuhSOROMANTIC." And of course these days, reading the entire book as buildup to that moment--and how he disappears from sight as he says it--and the next two lines, brilliantly from each's POV--but especially the buildup--gah. So. Damn. Good.

5. OMG GEN DON'T DIE.

6. wtf is going on? Hey, this looks like Gen! Like the real Gen! He's okay! Thank the gods!

7. ...I am missing something. (It wasn't until later rereads that I really started to understand what was going on with Costis and Gen, and Costis and the other guardsmen.)

btw I LOVE this post idea! props to you!

I was pretty surprised when Gen actually found the temple and all the gods sitting in the Aracthus. Until then, they were just going on a long trip and then WHOA IT'S FOR REAL!

4. I kinda guessed from the back cover summary that they would fall in love. Publishers usually use the same wording for a certain subjects:

...capturing something the Queen of Attolia may have sacrificed long ago.

To me this means some cold-hearted person meets her soulmate! (Sorry, sounds cheesy, but I couldn't think of any other way to put it.) So once I formed the conviction that the two were going to get together, there seemed to be proof everywhere... like clues seem to spring up and smack you on the head during rereads.

1. "The Thief": finding out Ambiades had betrayed them and he and Pol had been killed.

I wasn't very surprised at this, truthfully; I had Ambiades pegged as a likely traitor early on. I was sad about poor Pol though!

2. "The Thief": finding out Gen was that Eugenides and that he had kept the Gift.

I knew Gen was Eugenides going in, sadly. I so wish I hadn't been spoiled for it though, because my mind would have been blown in fifty million ways.

3. "Queen of Attolia": THAT SCENE, aka "Chop Chop" (we've read a lot of people's reactions, but some haven't weighed in yet and I don't mind rereading others).

It was a very satisfying emotional punch in the gut. I say satisfying because there's nothing I love better than a story that rips out my heart and stomps on it with a pair of mighty stilettos. In the midst of my weeping, however, I was mightily interested in Irene's various reactions! Because I LOVED her in The Thief, and I was so worried and annoyed that I had once again fallen for a "villain" character who wasn't likely to find redemption. OR WOULD SHE.

4. "Queen of Attolia": when Gen tells Irene he loves her the first time.

I was sort of getting vibes in that direction throughout the whole book, but I kept telling myself not to get my hopes up, because this was a book found in the children's section, and Irene HAD cut his hand off at the beginning after all, and no way, NO WAY was this going to end up as twisted as I hoped. And then they were in that little boat and I was all OMG THE TENSION, and then HE SAID IT, and I flung my book in the air in fit of shock and surprise and let out a great, wordless whoop at the awesomeness of it all.

5. "King of Attolia": the assassination attempt.

I'll admit, I spent most of KoA in the midst of a Costis-loving haze, but here is where my brain just devolved to the point of OMG LOVE LOVE COSTIS GEN COSTIS IRENE YAPPING DOGS COSTIS COSTISCOSTISCOSTISCOSTISSSSS. The exact place where I lost my mind was when Costis looks into Gen's eyes and realizes that he will march into hell for this unfathomable king (paraphrasing here, I don't have the book next to me).

6. "King of Attolia": the destruction of House Erondites.

HAHAHA, oh God, I remember this exactly. I actually said, "Gen, you magnificent chessmaster, you can make me your pawn any day!" out loud, and my roommate went, "What? You want to be a PRAWN? Look, when a book makes you want to morph into a crustacean, I'd say it's time to stop reading that book."

7. "King of Attolia": "GO TO BED"

I was probably just flailing around at this point.

Goodness, those were all very definitive scenes for me in the books. I'll add a couple more of my own, all from King of Attolia, because that book was where I spent the majority of my time overloading on the awesome.

1. The entire scene of Gen getting intensely annoyed with a courtier's comments, Irene pulling him back with a good old poison-in-the-goblet jab, and their subsequent dance. I was blown away by double-sidedness of it all. I felt like their entire relationship had been laid bare, yet I also understood what everyone else was seeing in the room.

2. When Gen goes to see the Oracle, and storms back to his room, only to have Costis enter later and see him crying. In a weird way, it hit me harder than the amputation had. I just remember reading that and suddenly my face was wet. I had to put the book down to gather myself. I tear up thinking about it even!

The list goes on and on... I was going on about more scenes, but then I realized I was just writing the entire book out. XD I will stop my essay now. Have to say, I love reading about other people's thoughts and reactions on the pivotal scenes!

Yes! These are excellent pivotal moments, too. (If we go on with this long enough, someone will have posted all scenes from all three books, lol.)

I felt like their entire relationship had been laid bare, yet I also understood what everyone else was seeing in the room.

Absolutely! I have to say, as soon as Costis tells us in KoA that no one has ever seen the king and the queen spend the night together, I was immediately all suspicious: Yeah, Costis, you think the court gets to see everything Gen gets up to?!

1. I pitied Pol but part of me pitied Ambiades.

3. *has said this before already and will not repeat due to risk of being shouted at*

4. I WAS SQUEALING LIKE MAD

2. That's when The Thief became the first (and so far the only) book where I would have felt cheated if somebody had told me the ending ahead of time. I had to reread the whole book, then.

4. Ah ha!

None of those other moments particularly hit me.

1. Kinda expected Ambiades behaviour. Didn't exactly get why Pol needed to die and of course I did not want him to die. His death made me feel upset for Sophos and is no wonder Sophos is abducted? by the 4th book- he didn't have Pol to save/protect him.

2. That point brighten the entire book to me

3. At this point, I must have been a very slow reader. I had no clue what was in store for Gen being strap in a chair. After reading "jailer unracked a curving sword" my real first thought was: dead meat, is he going to die now?.. that gonna suck then..why am i still reading.. (i always wonder did Gen knew his hand was going to be cut off..cause I didn't lol) So when it happened I was good! he didn't die only his right hand is gone.. oh GONE?

4. Squee, didn't expect it coming

5. Gen's pwnage!

6. totally proving Gen's pwnage -awesome!

7. nothing much.

What an interesting post!

I have similar responses to many here:

-I totally knew Gen had taken the gift and kept it. I thought that was the big twist and I felt all cool having picked it out. Then I found out he was THE Eugenides and had been working for Eddis the whole time. THAT was the big twist. Boy, did I feel sheepish. And I LOVED it. Being outsmarted is so satisfying.

-When Gen tells Irene he loves her, I about fell out of my chair. I about fell off again when Moira says, "There is your answer, little thief." HOLY MOLEH!

-The destruction of Erondites is perhaps my favorite part in King. "If Attolia was like a queen, then Eugenides was like a god revealed." Oooh, that whole scene just gives me chills. It's so delicious.

-One addition to your list: In Queen, when the magus wakes up to the sound of explosions and Gen is standing there in the dark, After I picked my jaw up off the floor, I sang to myself, "My boyfriend's back and you're gonna be in trouble...hey la, hey la, my boyfriend's back!" Because ThiefGen had been gone too long and there he was in all his glory doing what he does best. Oh, it was a lovely reunion.

Katewaits, I'm really liking you.

6. "King of Attolia": the destruction of House Erondites.

In one word: "PWN'D!" In more words, "It's Gen's Crowning Moment of Awesome!" (Almost literally crowning in this case, since it is a scene where he starts being noticed as a King.) That scene was pretty amazing and epic win, I have to say.

1. I don't remember much of my first reaction besides feeling incredibly sad that Pol was gone, but at least he took that bastard with him.
2. I guess you could say that there are two reactions you could have. One was Sophos' who was completely in the dark, and other is the magus', where he had guessed who Gen was, but didn't know about the gift yet. I was in Sophos' boat.
3. I made the mistake of starting on the Queen of Attolia first, and when I made it to that scene, I was so mortified that an author could do that to the main character when I had just met him that I had to put the book down. It was a good thing my friend set me straight and had me read the Thief before I finished QoA.
4. Wait WHA...well, if you insist.
5. I've read the KoA too many times to remember the first time, but I always love reading it, watching it all happen through Costis' eyes.
6. YES!!!!! Go get 'em! I read that part over and over I enjoyed it so much.
7. It's so hard not to have a friend around who will understand your hysterical laughter when you hear those words, "Stop whining," and "go to bed."
