Gen in Modern Day

queensthiefSo. Recently I’ve been thinking about what kind of person Gen would be if he was alive in modern times. This has been spawned by:
1) A rabid fic bunny that will not leave me alone, which was itself inspired by;
2) An image I have in my head of Gen lounging back in a chair, wearing jeans, sunglasses, and a cocky grin. I have sketched a version of this and pasted it below. :D (Please click for larger!)
I’ve also been doing a bit of a study of what he’d be like, and what kind of thief he’d be.
There are so many ways to be a thief nowadays – would be be a cyberthief, a pickpocket, a bank robber, a con-man, a hacking whiz? Would he work for the government, or for a rebel organization, or off of his laptop in his basement just for the hell of it?
All of these are tantalizing possibilities, but if we were going to try to match him to canon as closely as possible, I think it’d be something like this:
He’d live in a (tiny, mountainous, forested) modern constitutional monarchy, such as the ones that do still exist several places in Europe (famous examples are the UK, Belgium, Spain, Monaco, and Sweden). The ‘Thief of Eddis’ could still be a title handed down from parent to child, but it would be purely ceremonial – undoubtedly any practical usage of the position would have died out hundreds of years before, not least because of the major religion change such a country woul likely have gone through.
Gen, though (just like canon Gen) would likely be very interested in continuing the old tradition, for himself and for his tiny country. While I have no doubt he’d still steal earrings for fun and/or revenge on people, I doubt he’d occupy himself with nothing but jewelry and art thefts.
Remember, Gen has never been ‘just a thief’ – in each and every book he’s also been involved in types of political espionage. I imagine he could even be involved in seemingly innocent undercover work, and also quite capable of using all the latest gadgets and computers, as well as hacking into, getting around, and disabling all sorts of security systems. Mostly, though, I feel that he’d be (to quote Ocean’s 13) an “analog player in a digital world,” and damn good at it, too.
I’ve been looking through movies and books, trying to find clips of heists that remind me of something that Gen would do, but it’s been surprisingly hard. D: However, I have come up with these:
1) This picture, presumably of an actual car thief, just looks so much like Gen to me. I doubt Gen would steal cars – though I’m sure he could if he wanted – but just look at this guy’s face!! Geeeeeen~!
2) Gen’s acrobatics. This represents that like whoah. (This vid = Francois Toulour, aka Night Fox, from Ocean’s 12.)
3) Ignore the bits about this guy’s lifestyle, listen to what he’s stolen. Sooooooo Gen caliber!!!
4) As we all know, Gen is damn good at pretending to be people he’s not – whether he’s acting the gutter-rat or the idiot. I bet he could do secret agent, too, in order to get himself out of trouble. (Fast-forward the video to the 3-minute mark.) Wheee~ conning people. XDDD
5) I’m sure you’ve all heard of this one, but it just reminded me of something Gen might do in the lines of politically-oriented thievery. XDDD Also, the perfect mix of technology and undercover conning. (To watch the next bit, scroll through the thumbnails on the bottom of the video to find "N5".)
6) Also, we all know that Gen is good at stealing people… without them even knowing it, sometimes. XDDD

My Star Trek imaginings revolve around a certain plot. Earth and the planet Attolia have a special peace treaty. As agreed upon, a special ship in the Federation will be crewed mostly by Attolians and humans (Eddisians) who will be working together on various missions to strengthen the ties formed by the treaty. The captain is Helen, who supervised the peace talks with Attolia in the past. Here's the twist, Attolia is ruled by a constitutional monarchy and the prime ministers want to get the queen out of their hair. So somehow they got the treaty to say that the queen, Irene, would serve as first officer in the ship. Helen's cousin and uncle, Gen and MoW AKA Philon AKA Kickbootyus, are the second officer and security chief respectively. Resulting in complete pandemonium.
Wait, why am I telling you all this?

However, if we were to continue on a purely imaginary level... Attolia would have to be a country that is allied with neither Tiber NOR China, but would have a valid reason to send soldiers after a group from the US. The Middle East? DX I don't like that idea, but it works, kinda.
