[identity profile] rowana.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] queensthief
Hey guys. Today's chat just finished. Xie, Mycenaeth, anon8, Checkers and I all showed up, and it was nice to see a few lurkers on the visitor list too. We didn't actually get much serious book talk done, but I'm posting the transcript anyway. Most of the discussion was about other books, and anon8 and octopirock's meeting yesterday. :)

rowana: If I ninja about, do I get let out?
Mycenaeth from x.x.x.76 left this message:
Maybe.... Or I feed you cookies.
rowana: cookies!
rowana: Can I have both?
rowana: ooh, there's someone hew here
rowana: *new here
Mycenaeth from x.x.x.76 left this message:
I suppose you can have whatever you want. lol. YOU ARE TEH QUEEN.
rowana: *waves regally*
rowana: Mycenaeth, are you posting messages, or have you joined the chat?
checkers from x.x.x.167 joined the chat
checkers: hi guys
rowana: Hey Checkers
Mycenaeth from x.x.x.76 joined the chat
Mycenaeth: well
Mycenaeth: I have never used this before. XD
rowana: Hello. :)
Mycenaeth: hello. XP
Mycenaeth: I was confused. T_T
checkers: wow, i have some weird sounds happening. cool.
rowana: :D Fair enough
checkers: hi Ro, hi Mycenaeth!
Mycenaeth: I have no sound. =( As this computer has no speakers....
rowana: wierd sounds?
Mycenaeth: 'Allo Checkers. ^__^
checkers: i had it set to "alert with sound" when someone posts
Mycenaeth: XD
checkers: how is everybody???
rowana: ...I didn't know you could do that. That would have saved us a lot of missing by 30 seconds in the past
checkers: yes, true
rowana: :) I'm good. How are you guys?
Mycenaeth: Working... =(
checkers: oh, poor thing
Mycenaeth: So I might disappear for short bits of time
Mycenaeth: my shift goes to 5. ^^
rowana: I'm getting the wierd sounds now
checkers: i shut mine off :)
checkers: couldn't take it
rowana: They are slightly irritating
rowana: We've had new people wandering in here. That's pretty cool.
checkers: Yes, i was hoping for new people.
checkers: not that i don't <3 you guys, too
Mycenaeth: =p who else usually shows up?
rowana: :D Speaking of which, I got bored the other day and was wandering through the lurker's journals
checkers: yes, sounds like fun
rowana: And found comments from you Checkers. :) I'm not the only one.
checkers: erm...
checkers: maybe
checkers: anything interesting?
rowana: :) Your usual lovely encouragement.
checkers: oh, geez.
checkers: ok, raise your hand if you are jealous of anon and octopirock
checkers: *raises hand*
rowana: *raises both for emphasis*
rowana: You might be able to make it to a signing though Checkers.
checkers: that would be great, but would be very nerve racking
checkers: wracknig? which is it?
checkers: oops
rowana: Would the greatness outweigh the nerve wracking?
checkers: oh, yeah, definitely
rowana: wracking. I think.
Mycenaeth: XD greatness always triumphs over nerve wracking...
checkers: that's probably true. *steels self for book signing*
rowana: We did force Fabricalchemist. :)
checkers: yes, and i'll bet she's glad
checkers: looks like anon was here an hour ago
rowana: I'm sure she is.
checkers: maybe anon will come back to give us more details
rowana: :) She did write a lot in the post though.
checkers: yes, it was great, she must have a good memory
rowana: *nods* I was glad to hear the store had sold out of MWT's books.
checkers: i'll bet the clerk was embarrassed to find none when she wanted to autograph some
Mycenaeth: but it sounded like they only had a few to begin with...
rowana: It's kind of depressing, seeing such a great author so totally ignored over here.
checkers: I've been recommending the thief to teens in my library, and it's been mostly boys reading it
checkers: in fact, my one copy of KoA is in great demand
rowana: Really? I'd have thought it more a girl's book.
checkers: well, i think the boys like the action in it
rowana: :D That's good to hear.
rowana: Yes, and the emotional intensity really comes from the last part of the book, which isn't talked about in the blurb.
checkers: True. then you get sucked into reading the other books. Hey! more people here!
checkers: i have learned not to de-lurk anyone
rowana: Did Xie just wander in?
rowana: oops.
checkers: i think there are a couple of people.
checkers: The last time i "outted" someone, it was, well, you know
rowana: Yes. :D Though that was quite a success.
rowana: Anyway...
checkers: anyway...
checkers: :)
checkers: Hey, i'm reading The Eagle of the Ninth
checkers: Wow! i love it!
rowana: Oh yeah, I remember reading your post on your journal
checkers: have you read it?
Mycenaeth: Eventually I will get around to finishing the 6th Wheel of Time book. T_T
Mycenaeth: Maybe before August. XD
rowana: ooh, I wanted to ask - d'you think the relationship between (I'm embarrassed that I can't remember their names) the soldier and the slave was a bit of an inspiration for Gen and Costis?
rowana: The Wheel of Time? I'm not a Robert Jordan fan. :)
Mycenaeth: Kamet?
Mycenaeth: or something like that
Mycenaeth: And Nahusaresh
Mycenaeth: oh
Mycenaeth: nvm
rowana: The slave and soldier from Eagle fo the Ninth I meant. :)
Mycenaeth: I think I'm thinking of something different
Mycenaeth: hur hur
Mycenaeth: >__>
checkers: well, yes, i think there are many things about the book that make me think it was a huge influence on MWT
rowana: :) Let me check - is the Wheel of Time the series revolving around the guy named Rand?
Mycenaeth: Yes. =p I'm not a big fan either, but my friend suggested I read them.
Mycenaeth: I am a huge fan of Anne McCaffrey though...
checkers: i haven't read anything of his
rowana: :) It's slightly addictive though. It's like a convoluted fantasy soap opera.
rowana: Yes, the Pern books are great
checkers: hmmm, i think i've read her
Mycenaeth: mmhmmm...
checkers: maybe the first Pern book
Mycenaeth: I think I have all of the Pern ones, and a few of her various other series
Mycenaeth: The first one was my favorite. =p
rowana: I read a few, can't remember much of the plot, but I enjoyed them.
rowana: Have you guys read anything by Nancy Farmer?
rowana: I've put her on my to-read list, but I'm not sure where to start.
Xie from x.x.x.51 joined the chat 15 minutes ago
rowana: Hey Xie. :)
checkers: yay, xie!
Xie: Hallo. :-)
checkers: how are you??
Xie: Good, good.
Mycenaeth: hello Xie. =p
Xie: Hi!
Xie: Yay. Officially de-lurked.
checkers: i didn't do it!!
Mycenaeth: congraturations!
rowana: :D *breaks out the cyber cookies*
checkers: Nancy Farmer yes, i've read House of the Scorpion and Ear the Eye and the Arm
checkers: very good
Xie: Agreed
rowana: Are the books worth shipping in from the US?
Xie: That depends...
Xie: How much is it to ship that far?
checkers: well, i really liked house of the scorpion better. although it had it's faults
rowana: That one's available over here I think. Thanks, I'll try it.
rowana: It's...about £30. Which is a lot to a penniless student like me. :)
Xie: Eep! That is a lot...
checkers: wow. isn't that about $50 to us? anyone?
checkers: exchange rate?
rowana: About $45
checkers: whoa. no, not worth it
rowana: But I've only checked out one company at first class, so I'm sure it's more like £10 realistically.
checkers: ah. we have something called media mail over that is really inexpensive, but you can only send books, i think
rowana: I'll sort it out somehow. :) What did you like about Eagle of the Ninth Checkers?
checkers: well, it reminds me very much of the same world in The Thief. The characters are written really, really well. And the story is very exciting. I'm to the part where they are running from the tribesmen chasing them
checkers: has anyone read anything else by Rosemary Sutcliff?
checkers: there are some companion novels, i think
rowana: A few other books, she writes mostly around roman or viking times.
rowana: what other authors do you guys read?
checkers: i'm working my way through Diana Wynne Jones. Fire and Hemlock is sitting here waiting for me
checkers: for an in-depth study :)
Mycenaeth: Stephen Donalson, I'm reading the "Man who killed his brother" series
Mycenaeth: I'm about two chapters from the end of the fourth book
checkers: what type of book are they?
Mycenaeth: detective stories. the main characters really pathetic though, he's an alcoholic and before the series starts, he killed his brother and got his license yanked.
Mycenaeth: so it's about him and his partner Ginny, and they are always getting in trouble
Mycenaeth: great characters though
checkers: *writes author down*
Mycenaeth: he's such a loser, but he's very well described
checkers: for years all i ever read were mysteries
checkers: but I kno't know those
checkers: don't *typot*
rowana: :)
rowana: I haven't heard of those either. They sound like a decent read.
Mycenaeth: Oh they are very good
Mycenaeth: The author has another few series that my friend says are amazing
Mycenaeth: Something called the Thomas Covenant series?
rowana: *adds to list*
Mycenaeth: But apparently he's a very dark author
Mycenaeth: I guess this detective series 94 books long) is like, the happiest thing he's written
Mycenaeth: as in, his characters seeem to just get in more and more trouble
Mycenaeth: But he's very skillful at writing. =p
checkers: I like the mysteries by M.C. Beaton. The detective is Scottish and I love all things brit.
checkers: esp. Ro
anon8 from x.x.x.179 joined the chat
rowana: :)
checkers: Anon!
checkers: Yay
rowana: Hey anon!
Xie: *waves hello*
rowana: How're you?
anon8: hey everybody
anon8: wow a lot more people
checkers: quit reading and tell us about you know what
rowana: Xie de-lurked. :)
checkers: :)
anon8: i already did
checkers: yes, you did. thanks!
anon8: no prob...took me waaaay long to post though, formatting kept messing up and giving me weird spacing
Mycenaeth: weirdddd
checkers: i want to know how much notice you had that were going on a trip to a book store
Mycenaeth: I have to go move printouts now... =(
Mycenaeth: and then my shift ends at 5. T_T
Mycenaeth: and the library will close, so I will have to leave...
checkers: ok, thanks for chatting!
anon8: yeah, nice to see you
rowana: We'll miss you. :)
rowana: Those 50 mins went surprisingly quickly.
checkers: true
rowana: Did you get the hang of photobucket anon?
anon8: haven't had time to try
Mycenaeth: yup, bai bai!
checkers: bye!
anon8: bye!
rowana: bye. :)
checkers: anon, it was great that you had Octopirock to go with you
anon8: heehee, I guess it was more the other way around
checkers: why, did she feel like it was a personal invitation?
anon8: Octopirock got the email from MWT, and I didn't see the post on the Sounis comm until 10:30ish
rowana: :) That's pretty short notice
checkers: did you drop everything?
anon8: i guess octopirock emailed Megan in the past and Megan knew she lived in northern california
checkers: well, i remember Megan asking her in a thread if she lived in that area
anon8: oh, okay, that's true
rowana: :) What was Megan like to talk to? In person.
anon8: she's really nice and very easy and talk to
anon8: *to talk to
checkers: how long were you there?
anon8: mmm, little over an hour maybe?
rowana: were there many other poeple?
rowana: Sorry, we're firing questions at you like an interrogation. :)
checkers: oh, she can take it :)
anon8: so when octopirock and I got there (early of course) there were only a handful of people browsing
rowana: But more people showed up to meet Megan?
anon8: but when Megan needed to leave and we wanted someone to take a group pic for us, it was pretty busy up at the info desk
rowana: It sounds like the news spread. :)
anon8: well, it wasn't a book signing: she was visiting family, and decided she had time to drop by Cody's--so it was just octopirock and me
checkers: that was so great of her to do that
rowana: *nods* Absolutely.
anon8: yeah, I'm soooo glad she did
checkers: we are indeed jealous
anon8: after she moved to Ohio, I wasn't sure she'd ever come to CA for a book signing or anything
rowana: :D I'm clinging to the hope that she may one day visit London.
checkers: hmmm, i'll be in Ohio this summer
anon8: sounds good
rowana: I'll be in...toronto this summer
rowana: Which is marginally closer...
Xie: I'll be in Oregon this summer...still too far from Ohio...
checkers: ok, well, sounds like a road trip for you. not exactly sure where Toronto is, but Cleveland isn't too far. there's that whold lake/water thing in the way, though
anon8: lol
checkers: Oregon, well, sorry xie, that's pretty far
rowana: American/Canadian Geography is a mess for me. :)
rowana: I guess we can all cling to the hope of one day meeting her though.
anon8: yessss
rowana: It would be pretty cool.
Xie: 'Twould be twerrific, even.
anon8: ro, do you think you'd have time to come visit the US?
checkers: *pulls out atlas*
rowana: My family are going on to the US but I have to get back home to fit in work experience and a uni module :(
anon8: ouch
rowana: I could probably make it for a few days...if I pulled some strings. :)
anon8: :D
checkers: Ro, Toronto is only about 200 miles from where Megan lives. But there's this huge lake in the way
rowana: ...
rowana: ...I will get throug that lake.
rowana: * starts to plan*
anon8: switch from road trip to...plane...trip? maybe a little expensive
anon8: :(
checkers: boat? drive around Niagra Falls? go over in a barrel?, i dunno
rowana: :) I'll figure something out if I can. It'll be years before I'm back near the US probably, so I'll do what I can.
anon8: go over in a barrel!!
rowana: Unless you want to get rid of me checkers, the barrell may not be such a good idea
rowana: my brother threatened me with that when we went there as kids. :)
checkers: well...never mind then. you find a way to get to Cleveland, and i'll meet you there. I have relatives there. :)
rowana: Perhaps we should have a big MWT convention. If we ever get more than 100 members...
checkers: hey, we have more than 30 now
rowana: Then we could camp out on MWT's lawn.
anon8: babysit for her
rowana: She did suggest it in her letter...;)
checkers: i'm good with kids :)
rowana: Hey, well, whoever can get to Cleveland (?) this summer...
checkers: this is suddenly getting kinda...strange
rowana: Yes...
anon8: yeah..
rowana: just slightly...
rowana: :) I think we've run 15 mins over
anon8: we could just do another discussion question thread....she did say she loves it when someone poses a question and we all answer
anon8: lets her know that we get it
rowana: That's a good idea - I have to take down the answers she sent in about a week, so a new thread would be good
anon8: oh, does anybody know if Oneis was real?
checkers: who?
rowana: The one carried off the battlefield
anon8: that's right
anon8: I thought it was a Iliad-like figure but thought he was made up
checkers: oh, hmmm. don't know
rowana: I never thought to check
anon8: couldn't find a reference
rowana: Yes, it seemed like that kind of reference. Like the references Gen made to the people whom the Gods spoke to of glory
checkers: in a quick search on google, doesn't seem to be
rowana: nope, though it does seem to be a name
checkers: isn't there something in the author notes about that?
anon8: well I still got the epic-battle-hero-carried-off-the-field sense, so maybe that's all I was supposed to get
anon8: not specifically mentioned in author notes
checkers: interesting. i guess it was just meant to give us that sense, then
anon8: okay, cool
checkers: just listening is still listening
checkers: :)
rowana: Perhaps we're just too used to looking for extra connotations behind every word
checkers: i know i am!
anon8: :D
rowana: No de-lurking Checkers. :)
checkers: sorry *slaps self*
rowana: :D
anon8: oh, one more thing I wanna run by you guys
rowana: Sorry.
anon8: in the invocation to Hephestia, one of the words is "Sophos" so looking at the demotic, I assume Sophos's name means "wisdom"??
rowana: Yep. I think Sophos means wisdom ni real life too...I think...maybe
checkers: i believe in Greek it does
Xie: Sort of the male version of 'Sophia', no?
anon8: well, soph in sophomore does i guess
rowana: Yes, Sophia was the female name for God meaning wisdom
anon8: oh, that's cool
checkers: i didn't know that
anon8: me neither
rowana: :) I read 'Sophie's world', and that was the only idea that stuck.
checkers: add that name to your list, anon.
checkers: :)
anon8: haha, will do
rowana: :) It's an interesting, if very long, book.
checkers: well, someone else needs to come up with a discussion question. everyone is sick of hearing from me. Even me
rowana: Does anyone have any idea what the Magus' name might be?
rowana: :D But you have so many good ones Checkers.
anon8: yeah Checkers, I love your questions
rowana: We could use one of the discussion questions from the discussion page
checkers: Oh! when i read Eagle of the ninth, I wondered if maybe it is the same as Marcus's uncle, except I can't find his name! They always call him "uncle Aquila" which is the family name
checkers: anyway, he has been writing a history of siege warfare for 10 years
checkers: he reminded me a bit of the magus
checkers: There is also a character in the book named Aulus
checkers: and they wear fibula pins and say "so"
checkers: *out of breath after that rant*
rowana: :)
anon8: just looked it up on google: Aulus is latin for palace :D
anon8: heehee
checkers: cool!
rowana: What was Gen's other cousin's name?
checkers: Boagus?
rowana: Yes, does that have any particular meaning?
anon8: hmmm
checkers: come on, anon! *snaps fingers*
rowana: Nothing on google...
anon8: ...not finding it
rowana: Oh well.
rowana: Though, Aquila does sound like a pretty good name for the magus
rowana: er, going back
checkers: i'd LOVE to know his name
rowana: Perhaps we should start a speculation thread
anon8: okay google for aquila: constellation of the eagle, holder of Zeus's thunderbolts
anon8: plus other things
rowana: hmm, are there any names appropriate for someone who's a scholar and a soldier?
checkers: wow, that is really cool. the whole eagle thing is important in the book
anon8: well soldier wise, aquila is the name for the standard carried into battle
rowana: wow
checkers: where are you finding all this?
rowana: Lots of connotations. :) That sounds pretty likely.
checkers: or do you just "know" it
checkers: :)
anon8: just google for now, i could go to other sites later
anon8: nonono, no just "know it" that'd be scary
rowana: :)
checkers: we'd be SO impressed. you should lie and tell us that you know it
anon8: nonono
rowana: :D
checkers: ok, guys, i gotta go
checkers: sorry to say
rowana: Actually, I have to scoot too
anon8: well great chatting with both of you :DDD
checkers: Oh, Ro, will you post first that you are going to take the MWT thread down?
rowana: I'll post the transcript, though we didn't talk about much book related
rowana: Yes, I will
checkers: and take the other one down, too. with the other questions we asked
rowana: And I'll take it down in about a week.
anon8: okay
checkers: ok. you guys take care, it's been great!
checkers: bye!
rowana: See you guys later
