Hello!

I thought I would introduce myself by bringing up something that has been bothering me for the past several days. In a recent post by Greenwillow Books on Facebook  (I'm sure you all know what fabulous post I am talking about  :P ) I noticed something different about the cover of CoK.

My Observations

Here is a link to the first cover:

And here is the newest cover photo:

THEY GAVE SOPHOS BEARDAGE!!!!!!

Has anyone else here been picturing Sophos without a beard?

Me. I... I prefer my men clean-shaven!

Still, he has been on the run. I doubt he's had time for a shave.

But I don't know... it seems like the cover is the exact same, but darker all over. Maybe it's just the computer monitor? He is blond, so I doubt it'll be as noticeable on the cover in real life.

It may make more sense in the context of the book. In Thief, he is a naïve boy. In CoK, he has probably matured somewhat... The beardage may be there to help underline the difference

(He is still clean shaven in my head!)

I like the beard. Sophos is a man now, after all! And who has time for shaving when you're busy shooting at people with peashooters? Or... something.

*agree, albeit with snickering*

The first cover seemed unfinished. I like this one a lot more. Love the way you can't really see his face.

And welcome!

Okay, the beard has been quite controversial. But it's not a beard. My close-up avi was made to illustrate how much skin shows through. He still seems to be a young man, never fear. He's just been on the run (look closely at the blood on his wrist where his shackles seem to have cut him), and I doubt he's had any time to worry about shaving.

And I like this one better, too. I prefer not to see the faces. My imagination likes to provide those details.

Welcome!

I like the updated cover better

I love the detail about the blood on his wrist. It made me realise that the shackles have been changed to iron, rather than the simple rope shown on the first cover.

I like how they sort of cleaned up Sophos' hand - it looked kind of arthritic at first; and how they gave more shine to the ring on his finger. Now that we can't see his face (I'm really glad about that), I think the ring draws more attention. I like this cover!

Anyone under 60 should be beardless. Unless you're Aragorn or Wolverine, and can somehow still be hot with it.

But yeah, it makes Sophos seem too... old and forest-dwelling, or something. D:

I'm going to go out on a limb and say I actually like it. He looks a little young and girly in the original--his hand doesn't seem to fit with the rest of him at all. In the new version, he seems more of a piece.

I hadn't picked up on the manacle detail. Nice!

Huh. I suspect I have missed the reference. Whose fiance? Also Megan said there were no dancing bears in this book.

A scruffy beard makes sense from what we know of the book. It does look like the kind of thing he'd get rid of when he got the chance though. Plus, he was too young to grow a beard when we saw him last, so it does mark the passage of time.

I have nothing against beards. I'd be in a bind if I did. (Beloved hasn't seen his chin in over ten years, and I've never seen it.) :)

My dad occasionally does without his, and it drives me crazy for the first few days. Keep your hair on, man!

...of course, this does not apply to everyone.

Sophos is going to be a slightly different person now. Like Gen, I imagine the whole kidnapping sequence will leave him more "ruthless in his old age".

So actually, thinking of a Sophos whose matured enough to carry a bit of a beard is giving me a little sense of squee.
Probably needs to be trimmed to a goatee or something, but we'll deal with that later, with the next change of clothes and horses...

Like it or not, the beard fits with his current situation.

But he has to shave it before his big make-out scene with Helen.

Hahaha, yes.

Hmm, this has started me thinking, but it deserves its own post.

Hahahahahaha! I think it's just scruff that will be removed for more formal times. I kinda like it, knowing it's removable.

I think it looks good, and reflects the new, improved (maybe), older, more mature Sophos we've all been waiting for! :D

It's the real Tie. TA made it for me! (I just learned how to snag icons. Despite Kindigo's best hours-long efforts, no way could I actually create that)

Sir Percy doesn't really like the beard. I'm not all that fond of it either, but I don't mind it that much I guess.

I'm typing this while dressed up as The Queen of Attolia. Which has nothing at all to do with anything, but I felt like mentioning the fact.

HAHAHAHA! Your Sir Percy icon made my day.

(p.s. Nice! I also dressed up for Hallowe'en as Clothos, the Greek Fate who spins the thread... I figured it was the closest I could get to Moira. Wearing a (admittedly bedsheet) peplos is so fun!))

Yay for ancient greeks and their ridiculously easy-to-imitate clothing habits! (sheet, two safety pins, rope belt--you're set!) And also for Sir Percy and his Immensely Amusing Facial Expressions!

Oh, no!

From: [identity profile] deirdrej.livejournal.com
Are we sure that's not just a lot of dirt?

I mean, Sophos was about 12 or 13 in "The Thief," right? So he'd be a young man now -- but still too young to grow huge quantities of facial hair, don't you think? OK, he could have a bit of beardage -- but I think most of it'll come off in the wash!

BTW, I really like the cover, and I don't object to beards at all per se, but I don't see Sophos with a beard, somehow. (Then again, I didn't see him as quite that blond, and, in general, I really like the look!)

I'm 21 and I have a full beard- so do my 19 and 17 year old brothers.

But I picture Sophos as being a little girly. He's awkward with the sword, he's bookish. If he had a beard, it would only hide him.
