I recently bought one of Dido Armstrong's albums, Life for Rent. I downloaded the songs to my MP3 player (which as of now does not have a Queen's Thief name), and I had squeee! moment when I heard this song.

This Land is Mine might as well as been written for Irene. I believe it aptly describes her feelings towards the end of The Queen of Attolia and into The King of Attolia.

"This Land Is Mine"

From behind these walls I hear your song
Oh, sweet words
The music that you play lights up my world
The sweetest that I’ve heard
Could it be that I’ve been touched and turned
Oh Lord, please finally…finally things are changing

[Chorus:]
This land is mine but I’ll let you rule
I let you navigate and demand
Just as long as you know…this land is mine
So find your home and settle in
Ohhh, I’m ready to let you in
Just as long as we know…this land is mine

After all the battles and the wars
The scars and loss
I’m still the queen of my domain
and feeling stronger now
The walls are down a little more each day
Since you came, finally…finally things are changing

[Chorus]

Follow the days I’ve travelled alone
In this cold and colorless place till now
It’s what I had to pay

[Chorus]

This land is mine and I let you rule
I let you navigate on demand
Just as long as you know…this land is mine

Whoa! That is remarkably perfect for Attolia. I know it's easy to attribute meaning but it's so crazy perfect. I'd guess if there was something in the liner notes to indicate it was for Attolia you would have mentioned it but now I'm half tempted to go on a little internet crusade to find out if she is a fan. :) Thanks for posting this!

I was first introduced to Dido when my radio-alarm woke me up one morning by playing 'White Flag'. I was so morning-groggy I didn't catch the artist, and just about turned myself in knots before I tracked it down! This song is crazy crazy apt - must go listen again!

This is remarkably Irene-like!

One of her other songs, "Hunter" from the No Angel album, contains the line "If you were a king, a bear on your throne." But it's in a non-Eugenides context about how the singer wishes she could escape a suffocating relationship...still, "bear" + "king" = Gen, no?

Haha. Oops. I've never looked at a written set of lyrics and I've always heard "a bear". Guess I must be projecting a bit...? :)

The Thief

Well, I guess this is as good a time as any to bring up a song I've been sitting on for a while. It's 'The Thief' by Brooke Fraser (whose music I absolutely love), and I still can't believe it took me so very long to make the connection to Queen's Thief - given the title, yes, but have a look at the lyrics as well, and you'll see what I mean. Apart from one line (guess which one!) it could have been tailor-made for Attolia, letting her barriers down for Eugenides and not yet quite comfortable with the feeling.

Lyrics:

Your eyes are full
Full of the future of us
The air changes as you look across
At me in that wondering way

It is as if
I knew you before we spoke
Do our hearts know something we don't?
Conspiring, converging without giving us any say

[CHORUS]
You sing me to sleep
Talk down my walls
Look through my windows as I wait
You could be the thief
I give the key to

You're ruining me
With secrets and gestures and looks
With sonnets from second-hand books
Playing the chords in me nobody knew how to play

[CHORUS]

[Bridge]
It fits in your hand like water in rain
It unlocks our two different selves
And shows we are the same
Rather than wait `til I put me out for the taking
You're breaking
You're breaking
You're breaking into my heart
And I'm letting you.

And listen to it here on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4LxVh9WPiJI

And I say go listen to it even if you don't agree that the song fits QT, just 'cause it's so beautiful.

Yes, Brooke Fraser is awesome! I don't think you can get her first album, What to do with Daylight, in the US, but the second, Albertine, was released there last year. Also, you can listen to some of the songs here: http://www.myspace.com/brookefraser

Um. Yeah. TOtally not a rabid fangirl. Moving on...

Fermatas are love :D

Whoa, that does fit perfectly for Irene! :D *runs off to iTunes*

Hmm, the only song that's ever reminded me of the QT series is Heart's A Mess by Gotye. It always makes me think of relationship between Gen and Irene during Queen of Attolia from Gen's POV, mostly because it sounds so EPIC (and no one can convince that their dealings with one another aren't EPICSAUCE).

Here are the lyrics (http://www.sing365.com/music/lyric.nsf/Hearts-A-Mess-lyrics-Gotye/D32AD1045107B6564825718E0006006D) and here's the youtube link (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SIYAN-7eVm8&feature=related) if you want to take a listen. And I suggest you do! It's definitely a bit out-of-the-box, but oh, it is so good.

There are things in Dave Carter's "The Mountain" (Richard Shindell sings it best) that always make me think of The Thief:

i was born in a forked-tongued story
raised up by merchants and drugstore liars
now i walk on the paths of glory
one foot in ice, one in fire

i see the mountain, the mountain comes to me
i see the mountain and that is all i see

some build temples and some find altars
some come in tall hats and robes spun fine
some in rags, some in gemstone halters
some push the pegs back in line

i see the mountain, the mountain comes to me
i see the mountain and that is all i see

Philia, I love these lyrics! Have a feeling I've seen them before - have you brought the song up before?

i see the mountain, the mountain comes to me
i see the mountain and that is all i see

I mentioned it in Chatzy once, but I think no one had heard of it (my tastes tend to run to the folky end of the spectrum). It's a gorgeous song, especially, as I said, Richard Shindell's arrangement of it.

I thought of Eugenides the first time I heard "Never To Know" by Lene Marlin.
Here's the YouTube link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G7c7ZOuUiSY
And here are the lyrics:
Did you know
Hidden by his clothes there are some scars
Some are recent,
Some have been there for years

Did you know
It doesn't even hurt
It never really hurts
But there are tears

Do you want the real story,
Or do you prefer the lie
Do you want to see him smile,
Or maybe to see him cry
Do you want to follow,
Or let him go alone
For then, never to know
Never to know

Have you seen the way he acts sometimes
When you ask
He'll say that he's okay
Have you seen how well he pretends
Laughs out loud
Before he looks away

Do you want the real story,
Or do you prefer the lie
Do you want to see him smile,
Or maybe see him cry
Do you want to follow,
Or let him go alone
For then, never to know
Never to know

Hi, by the way! I'm FreeNarnian, a long-time lurker and first time commenter. I read the books for the first time a couple of years ago... I think because I saw KoA recommended on Amazon and I liked the cover. But I dutifully looked up the other books and read them in the right order. I've read them several times since, and given them to numerous friends.

It's largely due to the Sounis community that I came to understand and like QoA. So many nuances to savor! Megan Whalen Turner is a master of subtlety and her characters are ingenious! I love these books!

And before I go... I can't wait to see how the theme of earrings factors into CoK. (The previous books inspired me to finally go out and get my ears pierced - ha! Just bought my first pair of earrings yesterday... silver leaves... I think Gen would approve. I need to find bee earrings next.)

WOW i'm going to have to check this out! It's very fitting
its perfectly Eugenides.
I almost see this as Eddis's song sort of when she sees Gen drifting away after the *choP choP*.

Salutations, Freenarnian! Yup, Sounis is good like that - I swear I was oblivious to half the content of the books before I found Sounis!
