So finals are this week and I should be working on a paper right now, but I thought, What the hey? I'll post a random poll to sounis just for the fun of it. I'm a little curious to see if anything interesting will come of this, or if we'll all have the same answers.

So I present to you: The Queen's Thief Top 3 Ships Poll!!!!! Be honest and feel free to explain your answers or elaborate in the comments. And sorry if I left off any. I'm not sure how many crack shippers we have around here, so I wasn't sure whether to start sticking random characters together or not. XD

Eugenides/Irene: Do I even need to justify this? No, not really. They just have such a wonderful, extremely complex relationship. I am hoping we get to see a good bit more of it in the upcoming book because I'm sure we've only seen just the tip of the iceberg. And perhaps that's all there really is now. The two of them, I'm sure, hardly understand their own love. They're still figuring things out, but they're on the way. We saw that in KoA. And they just care for each other so much. He left his home, he's living a life that he hates, all for her. And she is having to learn how to be fully human again, and it's lovely to see that.

Helen/Magus: Should I call this a guilty pleasure ship? I don't know. I have a feeling a good bit of the fandom is against me on this one (I know jade_sabre_301 is), but I just really like the thought of them together. I think it's because I don't necessarily see the Magus as that old. I mean, he's definitely in his 40s, I would guess, maybe even pushing 50, and I know Helen is rather young, but...I don't know, in my head it works. I've even written a short little ficlet for them that hasn't seen the light of day. I'm sure by the time CoK rolls around, if Sophos/Helen becomes estabished, I'll come to love it, but I will always cherish a little place in my heart for Helen/Magus.

But I haven't really explained why. They both have great respect for each other, obviously. They're both very intelligent and brilliant strategists. And you know that when the Magus talks about how magnetic she is, he isn't just speaking for his king. And Helen seems a bit older to me, or maybe the term is mature. I guess that's why pairing her with an older man seems fine to me. And she is not especially girly, and I think that would work for the Magus, since he's a soldier.

And now this is turning into a tl;dr ship manifesto, practically, so I'll stop there for this one. I'll say a little about my third choice in another comment.

I married a guy 14 years my senior, so the age thing never bothered me much. =) And I've always loved Helen/ Magus, even if I can never quite picture it ending in anything other than heartbreak...

I'm still trying to find a good match for Helen. The magus seems like the best candidate in my head so far. I'm not convinced yet though. Maybe Sophos is the guy but wouldn't it be kinda weird that both queens marry younger guys?

Helen/Magus have chemistry, definitely. I believe they love each other, but neither one of them has allowed themselves to consider even the possibility of acting on it since they know that she must make a political marriage in the best interests of her country.

And I agree with you about their relative maturity, too. I'd be all in favor of alternate universe Helen/Magus fic! :D

Now now now, everyone, if I'm figuring ages right, the Magus is 30-35 years older than Eddis.

(yes, really! In Thief, it says the plague happened 30 yrs before Gen was born, and he's 15, so the plague happened 45 yrs ago. The magus lost his family and went off to the city to get an education. Let's say he was 5 to 10 yrs. old when they died. That would make him 50-55 in Thief. And Eddis is 5 yrs older than Gen = 20.)

So as much as they are fond of one another--NO, I say. I just can't make that kind of age difference work. *squicked*

Totally late to the party, but I'm a Magus/Eddis shipper as well, for all the above reasons, so I won't bore everyone by repeating my theories again. And also because I think she likes him a lot more than Sophos. Also, we've actually had quite a lot of on-the-page interaction between them in a book otherwise very much about another country (KoA) which I can't help feeling is significant.

I agree with you on Eddis/Magus, and think that the age thing shouldn't bother us too much since we already have Attolia robbing the cradle. :) Shows how little mwt cares about age in the face of true love!

My love for Mow/Gen's mom is mostly due to fanfic, I think. There have been a few that you talented ladies have written that delves into their relationship a little and I've also written a few stories (not that many of those have seen the light of day, either, but I'm working on it). It's kind of like my love for Ozai/Ursa in Avatar. I'm not saying I can explain it, I just love it. Perhaps because we don't know a lot about it, I feel like there is so much more the fandom can speculate and explore and even invent about them. Seeing as how Gen's dad doesn't seem to care for the whole thieving business, I find it very interesting that he married who he did. I think it must have been for love and he must have hated every minute of falling in love with the King's Thief's daughter. XD

It's totally ok. I remember when I was rereading the series a few months ago, that I was nearly shipping Gen with everyone. I was all: Ooh, if I was into incest, I'd totally ship Helen/Gen, or If I was into slash it's be Costis/Gen. Only, I couldn't really go with those because my love for Gen/Irene is so great. Then again, I wish we had some more fans on the fringe who were also ficcers, 'cause I'd love to read some good Gen/Helen fic, I think. XD

Irene/Gen: Everything about the other should repel them, but still they cannot help but be drawn in.

Gen's Mother/MoW: What I would give for a short story about this pair! (Though it would no doubt end up refuting the complicated backstory I have made up for them in my head!)

Other than that, I like to think that when he gets bored, Gen tries his hand (HURR) at matchmaking. Specifically with Hero and Costis. No, there is no basis for it. No, I don't think they share a single word with each other in KoA. No, none of this will stop me from ridiculously fantasizing about their courtship.

Also, I maybe kind of ship Irene/Helen in QoA.

Gen/Irene: I was all for them before Gen kiddnaped Irene! Maybe that reveals the twisted bit of my personality? ehh...but they are so real together. I mean I don't feel that MWT forced them together, especially after our intimate glimpse (I want more!) into their relationship in KoA. One of my favorite scenes between them is when Irene is furious on Gen's behalf and she is insisting he is kind only to realize, as Gen says, that he is not really. At heart they really are not so very different. BTW, what is thier shipname? Iren? Grene?
Helen/Sophos: I've had a bit of a soft spot for them. Yes, Sophos is still a shy young boy uncertain of himself in my head but I also see his potential. Also we have always seen him through other people's eyes, never his own and I wonder what we have missed. And if anyone deserves happiness while also haveing the political benefit of peace Helen does!
Costis/? As much as I love the Ornon/Sheep ship, I have to take care of Costis first. So I don't know her name (I lent my books to a friend!) but she is one of Irene's attendents and there are a couple hints that Costis likes her or at least notices her. Sorry this really needs proof. Does anyone know who I am talking about?
