Hey! New person here. I finally (finally) found you guys! And boy is this going to be the start of a beautiful friendship. I mean seriously. An in-depth discussion of underware and Sophos's facial hair?! What is not to love?
The Queen's Thief series has been the love of my life for over 10 years now. And I am halfway (heh. maybe more than that!) in love with Gen. A friend introduced him to me and I will always remember the utter sadness I felt when I realized there were only two books and a third was very uncertain. And then the wait! My gosh the wait for KoA! Did any of you here have to wait between Thief and QoA? If you did how did you survive? Did you think there would be a sequel?
I finally let it go, resigned, until one day I walked in my library and KoA was waiting there for me in that gorgeous cover. Sheer bliss is an understatement. And since then I have never doubted a 4th (or 5th, 6th, 7th...ok that is my eternal hope speaking).
These are a part of a select minority (including everything Robin McKinley) of books that I read and re-read and read again. I daren't replace them but they are just falling apart because they are so well-loved. And I pimp these books like crazy. I try and (with infinite stealth *snorts*) put them on display when I go to libraries. I hope that at least one person has benefited from my craziness!
And I have been searching for ages (all in the wrong places of course) for fellow fans and aficionados. So I almost fell off my chair when I heard about Sounis and there was no way I was sleeping that night.
I am overjoyed, giddy to be apart of this comm, especially as March is slowly but surely, creeping up!
And here is my first (!!!) question: in the series we have seen how MWT uses myths specifically to parallel and inform Gen's story. For example we got her ( I don't have the books with me!) version of Persephone and Hades to parallel Helen's reluctance to let Gen go. But I cannot understand the significance of the myth of Basilius that Phersine tells Gen, especially since she made it up. Why was Gen so uncomfortable? Why was he comforted and humbled in the end? What was the myth saying about Gen's current circumstances?
And on a side note: How much do you adore Phresine?!

So there it is. I cannot wait to get to know all of you and share this and many other loves.
BTW, I choose my screen name before I knew of this comm! Excellent forshadowing, right?

Welcome!!

I've also always been a little lost by that myth. I think there have been discussion about it on the comm before, but it'll take some of the more experienced [livejournal.com profile] sounis veterans to dig that up. XD It's very intriguing, though, and I really enjoy the myths thrown in there now, whereas the first time I read TT, I felt like they were a bit expendable and couldn't wait to get back to the real action.

Welcome! I was lucky enough only to have to wait a year between The Thief and QoA but man the wait for KoA was seven long years. Apart from ACoK, there's going to be another 2 books.

I never quite got the Basilius tale either but there has been discussion on it. I'll try dig up the archives for you.

I remember these dicsussions... and I had thought that I at least mostly-understood what was going on in that myth before I saw what everyone ELSE had to say about it.

And, oddly enough, I am waiting around here for my former-roommate to get back so I can read her... you guessed it... the myth of Kilmun and Gerosthenes. (She's getting used to my slightly-obsessive over-the-shoulder, please-can-I-read-to-you thing. "What chapter are you on?" "Seven." "Oh I love that chapter! Its where everything really gets going! ... Can I read it to you?".... "What chapter are you on?" "Nine." "THAT ONE IS AWESOME.... can I read it to you?" Etc..)

Yes, another two books! Megan said so. She said it three times. I counted. I CAN COUNT, WOOHOO!

The cookies are...usually chocolate chip but can be whatever you want them to be if chocolate-chip isn't your thing.

Break from uni I hear you say...same here. Are you UK-based? I am.

Not anymore to my great sadness, but I used to live in Bury St. Edmonds in Suffolk. Where are you?
And I just got addicted to the tv show Merlin and I am so frustrated i am not over there! I can feel the craziness all the way over here in the U.S.

I pimp that to everyone. It is Just. The. Best.

In fact, there may be a sequel somewhere but I may have made this up in my head...

I think I made it up in my head.

You may have seen these before, but just in case: MWT has also published a book of short stories, titled "Instead of Three Wishes", and has a story in the "Firebirds" anthology, edited by Sharyn November.

Does anyone else know of other stories she may have in print?

Don't fortget the Disney short story of Gen when he was younger with Steinides muscles. But I don't know if it is exactly in print, but look it up in the tags if you haven't read it already.

Hi!

Well, I found the books right after KoA had come out, so the only one I've had to wait for is Conspiracy of Kings, and it's been... what? About three years? I'm a pretty patient person, though, so it doesn't bother me!

So about a week ago I was in Barnes and Noble. They don't sell the sequels, and the one copy of the Thief looks very lonely squished in between all the Twilight ripoffs and gossip-girl styles books.
This is kinda how it is at the bookstore I work at (Books A Million--mostly a southeastern store here in the US) We used to have The Thief and hardcover of KoA (never could find Queen). Then just TT. And there was always just one lonely copy squished between all the other Newbery books and you practically couldn't see it. It was sad. Then they stopped carrying any of them altogether and I'm thoroughly depressed that I can't rec them to people in the store. (I still could, but it doesn't work as well when they want a new book NOW).

I really hope so. But I don't know. I hate that people in my city don't have the chance to get exposed to these awesome books (unless they're at the library; I haven't checked there 'cause I usually just buy books nowadays).

That is possibly the best book story I've heard in a long time. It's the same way at my Barnes and Noble. Awhile back I ordered KoA (to be shipped to my B&N from someplace else) and they ordered the hardcover, which I couldn't afford (I read to much to buy hardcovers, anyone else have that problem?), so they put it on the shelf next to the lonely thief. Sadly, no one has bought it yet, but I think I'll pull a leaf out of your book and do the same thing...

New books only come out in hardcover, so you don't have a choice but to buy that version. It's a sad thing, but I like having the occasional hardcover. I have to plan in advance before I buy a new hardcover book.

Yes, the new paperbacks do have the same gorgeous artwork as the hardcovers, if you mean these hardcovers:

(To be quite honest, I dislike the old covers of the books, I'm so glad I have these versions) The Thief and The King of Attolia paperbacks also have extras in the back.

I've read them all like five times *massive understatement so as not to seem crazy*

LOL! We can all relate to that.

I was in Borders yesterday and they had not one but TWO copies of Thief and right next to them one copy of each of the others. It made me so happy that I bought one Thief to give my niece for Christmas.

Hello, how are you? I never have very useful answers to the myth parallel questions so I am going to defer to others' expertise (read: neatly sidestep your question:) but I always love to mention that I too am ga-ga over mwt's writing! It's her I'm in love with (in a totally normal, non-creepy way...I think:) but Gen is pretty great, too. Cheers!

Welcome! What a nice introduction and squee! I am with everyone else with the myth. I puzzled over it a good bit, then decided mwt was way too smart for me. But I think part of it was that Gen was worried about the potential bad ending and then humbled and comforted a little by the fact that the slave's perception of the king as a good man was what saved him, despite his (the king's) own perception of failure. In other words, Gen's better than he thinks he is, and everyone knows it.

But I'm kinda simple, so that's probably just the surface of it. Either that or it's dead on because I actually read it here at Sounis. Isn't Sounis A W E S O M E?????

Stalking Sounis

From: (Anonymous)
Well queens_thief, you sound exactly like me. I haven't yet joined this lovely site though. I've only stalked it for...4 or 5 years...I'm content with leaving anonymous comments instead of making my own livejournal account. I first read "The Thief" in 5th grade (2002/2003). When I found the "The Queen of Attolia" I freaked out. In Jr. High I found this site and heard rumors of "The King of Attolia". Needless to say, I was ecstatic. The Queen's Thief books are my favorite and I am glad there is a site devoted to them where I can hear others discuss my favorite series. My friends are sick of me telling them that I want "A Conspiracy of Kings" to come out. So, I know what a relief it is to find others who love the books as much as you do. Can't wait to read your commments.

Bekah

P.S. I really am not a creeper. I just love this site, but I tend to lose/forget passwords to everything. It is just easier not to join. I like squealing with everyone on this site, even if I don't comment.

I remember when I first got to the ending. I was so surprised. I didn't expect it. Right away I reread it. I think because I was younger I didn't catch all the hints of who Gen was. If I had been older when I read it, I may have caught some of the hints on my first read. Most of my friends did.Today I still love rereading them and finding things I hadn't seen before.

My mom accidentally read the "The Queen of Attolia" first. She had seen it laying around the house. I was so mad at her! After she finished it she said, "We should get the first in the series. This was really good." Of course I scowled at her and said that we have the first book, and she just ruined the ending by reading "The Queen of Attolia". I know she appreciated the complexity of the whole series.
I think I'll join someday. Thanks!

Ten buck says the myth will make 100% sense in CoK or whatever the 5th book will be called... :p

So ahaha the universe is laughing at me. Take a look at this:

Image (http://s201.photobucket.com/albums/aa266/emerald_happy/?action=view&current=oxfamkoa1.jpg)

I kid you not. The King of Attolia was selling in Oxfam for £1.99. Vastly underpriced IMHO. What's more it hasn't been read. The spine is completely uncreased and the paperback creases very easily. I always complain and whine that I've NEVER EVER seen Megan's books in dead tree form in this country in a bookstore or a library. Even in the huge Waterstones in London which is supposed to be the biggest bookstore in Europe. Even in Forbidden Planet.

Some person in this city must have got this book as a present ordered all the way from the U.S. and not read it.

*sees book on bottom shelf*
Am I dreaming? *picks up, grumbles about it should be shelved in the sci-fi and fantasy section*
*wonders if she can dust it for fingerprints, wonders if someone accidently left it behind and that's how it ended up in the shop*
*buys*

On the way home my mind kept thinking up conspiracy theories that it was left there for me to find. This is what becomes of loving stories with such smart plotlines and mysteries.

What a great story! Books definitely find the people who are meant to have them. Sometimes they stalk us [which is only fair, since we stalk them too].

Welcome to de-lurking. Seems lots of us have started to (myself included, no big post yet, not that I'm not hankering to, just haven't had a thing to post about)

The story from Phresine, I just realized since re-re-reading 'The Thief' a few weeks ago, is actually mentioned by the Magus as they are passing through Attolia. Specifically someone (I think Ambiades?) says that it's like an ocean, and Magus says it IS an ocean, and that it was planted in the name of some goddess, but no one remembers which one. Phresine obviously does though! I'm sure that there is more to the relevance of the story, the need for trust being one.

Perhaps what Eugenides was supposed to get out of the story was that everyone needs someone they can trust beside them, otherwise they will fail. This is important to the Queen of Attolia, who has cultivated a distrust of everyone, and it is relevant to Eugenides too, who hasn't been accustomed to relying on others either. Not in any significant way, anyhow.

I really hope that there is even more to this story, because isn't that always more fun?
