Hello everyone!

Based on popular reaction, we're doing it: a readthrough of all three books, in order. By my count we have about 8 weeks, which boils down to 6ish chapters a week, so we'd better get crackin'!

Here's how this will work: Every Friday, the person in charge of that week will post a short guide, with a few questions to start the discussion, and then we can babble away in the comments. The goal is to hearken back to the early days of the comm, where we dissected anything and everything we came across; don't be afraid to talk about something that might have been mentioned before, because we're always game for conversation!

At the end of this post I'll do a tentative reading guide, so if people want to claim weeks to lead discussion, they may. I'll do this week's, and then after that we can pass it around; if more than one people want the same day (I apologize for the fact that there are only eight), we can work something out. But first! The most important part!

Your assignment for this week: The Thief, chapters 1-7
Readaloud? Yes, for chapters 1, 3, and 7.

(I, for one, find the readaloud a great way to do something else with my hands while getting a chapter done. If you've signed up for a chapter in one of the later sections, this is the perfect opportunity to get it done! :-D)

The Plan
Week 1, 1/17-1/22: TT, 1-7, led by Jade
Week 2, 1/23-1/29: TT, 8-12, led by ?
Week 3, 1/30-2/5: QoA, 1-7, led by [livejournal.com profile] avian_xj
Week 4, 2/6-2/12: QoA, 8-13, led by [livejournal.com profile] ilysia_039
Week 5, 2/13-2/19: QoA, 14-21, led by Jade
Week 6, 2/20-2/26: KoA, Prologue-5, led by [livejournal.com profile] sgwordy
Week 7, 2/27-3/5: KoA, 6-10, led by TA and PR
Week 8, 3/6-3/12: KoA, 11-14, led by Jade

There's also an option for
Week 9, 3/13-3/19: Thief! and Eddis Short Story, if we want. :-)

I look forward to rereading the books with all of you! See you Friday.

p.s. on a totally different note, in case y'all haven't heard about it, [livejournal.com profile] help_haiti is a community doing a fandom auction in which fanworks are exchanged for donations to charities dedicated to helping the victims of the earthquakes in Haiti. I know we have a lot of talented people involved in a lot of different fandoms here, and so if anyone wants to shop or make offerings, it's a great place to go help. The first auction closes on the 20th, but they'll be doing another later this season. Just a thought!

p.p.s. a thought that occurred to me from reading [livejournal.com profile] sartorias's post: what can we do to help make the release of CoK Megan's best release yet? Brainstorm, we should have one.

Excellent! *runs to pile of books, begins to dig feverishly* This is going to be absolutely fantastic, and a great way to countdown for CoK.

*does happy dance*

I wonder if I might make a claim on leading the discussion in Week 4? That would be smashing.

Fabulous idea! The only problem is limiting oneself to only seven or so chapters a week. *grin*

As for spreading the awesome that is the Queen's Thief series... one thing I like to do is buy five or six books and tape notes to the covers that say something like, "Good books--pass them on," and then leave them in various public areas. I don't know if it actually works, but it's fun! And in preparation for the CoK release, you can add Conspiracy of Kings--Coming March 23 in large, dramatic font. :D

These are both great ideas! But, tell me, what do you mean by readaloud? Is it a skype chat, or something, with one person reading a chapter and everybody else listening? Or do we pick a chapter and record it, and then post it somewhere as an mp3? I'm confused!

I love the auction idea -- and I agree that it would be great to do something for the book release!

And thanks for your comment on my blog, Rosaleeluan! But could you just clarify -- is it actually an entry, or were you just stopping by to say hi.

You are made of awesome, btw, getting SO many people to read the ARC!

~D.

I wasn't actually entering the contest for the ARC, no. I was just sharing a story of sharing the Sophos-love. :-D

EXCELLENT idea. And perfect timing :)

Could you maybe put in the dates next to each week though? If one of my favorite sections lands on a week I have free time, I'll totally lead it. I hate to pick one and then do a bad job because I'm super busy though.

These are going to be such nice things to look back at for later reads too!

I doubt I'd be able to make any discussions, but in lieu of that, I'm willing and able to record mp3s of the missing chapters in a hurry, with the caveat that I have a reader's vocabulary and don't speak Greek.

It seems that many of those who signed up to read chapters in 2007 missed the year deadline (and then some), but I don't want to step on any toes, so let me know which chapters are up for grabs.

I'd love to lead a week too, just let me know what that entails

*runs off to get book*

Agaahh This is going to be soo much fun *salivates*

Re p.p.s: Let's have a release date party!! Or a read all night long a-thon.

make it a Bestseller! i heard once before to get a bestseller tag is to sell 5000 copies, is that true? We can all buy 5 books (for ourselves, gifts, etc) and we hit that mark!

I might be able to catch up when my books arrive from Amazon--I just read them from the library late last year, and realised I had to own them.

Sounds crazy awesome - can't wait!!

Alas, I don't think I should lead a chapter, since I'm getting into the uber-homework season. But I'll try to comment on the posts.

As to mwt's best release yet, I know what I'm doing. CT, Souji, and I are planning on dressing up (Gen, Sophos, and Helen respectively) and we're going to carouse around whichever bookstore we choose to grace with our presence until we find a copy. If I can get either of them to do it, we might act out conversations (I could probably talk CT into it - Souji, probably not). I'll get pictures. I'd love to hear what other people plan to do!

Ooo good idea! *joins idea* Hmm..I can't decide if I'm going to dress as Hellen, Attolia or Gen..hm..

except I'll be the only one! :/

Oh, well I'll take jerkface with me :D

Seconding about the homework there, I get hours of it, plus a job. I don't know if I'll be able to keep up =/ But this sounds like so much fun!! Are the discussions going to start on Fridays?

Still. I might be able to manage it. Can I tentatively put myself down for week 7?

This is exciting! Only the slight panic of having a paper due in two days is preventing me from reading them all RIGHT NOW.

If you're still looking for people to lead weeks, I'd be happy to do so. It appears choices are limited, but I'm not really picky. Week 2 would be fine with me (I don't think anyone's picked that yet...), or anywhere I could be useful. :)

Thanks!

I'm excited about the read-a-long. Let me know what I can do to help. :)

Anyone considered using GoodReads (http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/448873.The_Thief) so we can follow along and make progress as we go? Just a thought.

Hey, El--sorry it's taken me so long to get around to this. If you'd like to collaborate on the discussion this week, I'd be totally up for it. (I've been kind of swamped, which is why this message hasn't happened until now.) If you want to send me a message--maybe sometime on Thursday--with some questions/observations/favorite lines about the reading, I'll add a couple of my own and post the lot on Friday. (If you have a better method for collaboration, just let me know.) I'd love your help, if you're able to give it.

Again, sorry for my tardiness! Hope to hear from you...

My sister will be stealing my copy of KoA just when we'll be reading it. *pout* Maybe I could check it out from the library... my sister just HAS to read my marked copy, nothing else will do...
I kind of want to do week 7, but obviously there is the might-be-bookless problem... *sigh* Having two sets of the books is looking like an even BETTER idea... unfortunately, having just paid tuition, this is SO not an option around now...

Ok, I am totally going to stop saying things that sound like complaints. Complaints are only endearing when they come from Gen, anyway.

Jonathan Stroud: good? I never got around to the third book in that series and can hardly remember the first two, but I remember liking them.
