We have a shiny, new readaloud chapter--Chapter 12 of A Conspiracy of Kings read by [livejournal.com profile] ninedaysaqueen !

Listen to the tale of Two Sounisians in the City Behaving Oddly while dear Sophos dresses in startling finery (to look less like riff raff) and the Magus lounges in his bath like a terrapin. There are sound effects! Listen to it here. (You must be a member of the community to access the chapters.)

Want to read a chapter? Leave a comment on the readaloud post and we'll add you to the list. Also, a reminder that we'll be removing names in another week or so, so if you signed up years ago and still want your chapter, speak now or forever hold it.

My, my.  We are on A Roll.  [livejournal.com profile] ninedaysaqueen has recorded another readaloud chapter--Chapter 15 of A Conspiracy of Kings. Go forth and listen to Sophos and Gen sneaking around the palace, with Gen contributing to Aris' bank account as they travel incognito to the local watering hole.  We learn a lot in this chapter; when Gen first realized he loved Irene (poor Dite), the worry over the king's health, and dear Sophos willing to offer his heart to Gen on a toothpick.  Nice job, Lady Jane!

Want to snag a chapter of your very own?  Look for available chapters in the Readaloud list, and add a comment there about which chapter you'd like to record.  You can listen to lots of other recorded chapters there, too.  You must be a member of the community to view the readaloud post.

Wow, after a loooong hiatus, we have another new Readaloud chapter!  Go--right now--and listen to Mariah reading Chapter 6 from The Thief.

In this chapter, our intrepid travelers enter the Sea of Olives, poor Sophos gets whacked while sparring with Ambiades (who is jealous over a cloak), Gen steals a comb and receives a well-deserved punch, and the Magus tells the story of Eugenides and the Sky God's thunderbolts.  Gen, meanwhile, is happy with his gutter slang and half-swallowed words, bless his deceitful little heart.  Whew, Mariah hangs in there with a long chapter and reads with feeling and verve.

You must be a member of the community to access the Readaloud post.  Take a look at the post if you'd like to claim a chapter for your own.  Clever Mariah also found this awesome site that allows you to record straight from your computer with no special equipment--you don't even have to set up an account.  It's super easy! vocaroo.com

A bit HOORAY to [livejournal.com profile] ninedaysaqueen, who has taken my slacker comment to heart and recorded chapter 23 of A Conspiracy of Kings.  You can listen to it here in the original Readaloud post.

In this final chapter of ACoK, listen to Lady Jane's dulcet tones as Gen spills his wine (though he could have saved it), we begin to fret about the king's health, Sophos and Gen patch things up, and the boys yuck it up over shooting the ambassador.

Want to snag a chapter of your very own?  Look for available chapters in the Readaloud list, and add a comment there about which chapter you'd like to record.

I was thrilled to find the post with the links to the fan readaloud on this site, because my favorite thing ever is to listen to well-loved books while I work on my art (I'm an art major.) I listened to every chapter that was posted, but I was severely disappointed when I realized the last post was in 2007! I don't have immediate access to the audiobooks all the time (the library keeps insisting I return them for some reason) and also I'm not a huge fan of the reader's voice and I LOVE to hear other fans' interpretations.

I was wondering if there was interest in re-starting that beautiful initiative. If so, I would be more than thrilled to read a chapter or two. If it was stopped for copyright reasons or something, I'd like to know so I can consider purchasing the audiobooks.

It's a BIG chapter--The King of Attolia Chapter 5.  Sixty pages!  Eighty-four minutes of reading!  Gosh, [livejournal.com profile] elvenjaneite must be exhausted.  But what a chapter it is!  You can relive Gen tossing a coin in the air while the gods yank his chain, Baron Artadorus with a knife-edge to his throat, "The King's Wedding Night", THE dance, Dite in the garden, Relius's betrayal, and through it all,  poor loyal, honorable Costis, hit by a swing in prime and feeling a bit crabby.

Now.  After listening to these glorious audiofiles, aren't you all just dying to record a chapter of your own?  There are plenty of unclaimed chapters.  Those of you who already signed up to record chapters--where is that mic, anyway?  No time like the present!  This entry explains everything you need to know.  If you want to chaim a chapter, leave a comment on the original Readaloud post.  There's a limit of two chapters per person, just to be fair.

You must be a member of the comm to view the readaloud post.

Another fantastic readaloud, this time the Eddis short story read by [livejournal.com profile] puppeteergirl .  Go and listen, now!

This one will really make you think.  Why is Helen "Eddis" and not "Eddia"?  What did poor cousin Lycos do to be exiled?  Why was Helen heartbroken and relieved when he left?  Have we seen the goddess Periphys any other times?   And extra credit if you remember Helen's three brothers' names.

A new readaloud chapter!

This is the first of three.  A long--very long--chapter, and the first to be recorded from A Conspiracy of Kings.  In this one, poor Sounis swears alligience to Attolis, Gen smashes a wine cup, and Sophos muses about Attolia overcoming her own rebels with ten men and a penknife.  Go forth and listen to [livejournal.com profile] heather_el  !

If the audio is choppy, pause it and let it buffer for a bit.  This site has limited options, so if it doesn't offer enough downloads or whatever, please post a comment to let me know.  It's a work in progress, and I apologize for the delay in getting new chapters posted.  It's amazing what one is able to get done once school is OUT.  Yay!
[identity profile] checkers65477.livejournal.com
Has anyone been in touch with [livejournal.com profile] twwcredits  lately?  There are a couple of new Readaloud chapters that are ready to be posted, and she hasn't responded to emails asking to add them to the site where the chapters are hosted.

There's a great new chapter in the [livejournal.com profile] sounis readaloud!

[livejournal.com profile] puppeteergirl has recorded Chapter 5 of The Thief.   With not just one story, but two.  Go and listen to the Magus being as smug as a cat, Gen instructing everyone in the proper pronunciation of a country's name, and Sophos and Pol having an illuminating conversation.  All this, with a bit of music added in and a fabulous reading of the chapter.  Nice job, [livejournal.com profile] puppeteergirl !

You must be a member of the community to view the readaloud post.  Go to the post and scroll down to Thief Ch. 5.

If you'd like to record a chapter, leave a comment on the Readaloud post and I'll add you to the Sounis Waiting List.   Remember, there will be  lovelylovely chapters of a brand new book available soon!  And those who are signed up to record chapters--and you know who you are--can contemplate ways to make it happen.  Soon.
[identity profile] checkers65477.livejournal.com
Our very own [livejournal.com profile] ninedaysaqueen  has completed a new chapter in the [livejournal.com profile] sounis readaloud!

You can listen to Chapter 2 of The King of Attolia here.  (You must be a member of the community to view the readaloud post.)  Go to the post and scroll down to KoA Ch. 2.

Go listen to Lady Jane's spirited reading of Gen and Irene bantering in poor Costis's bedchamber, and Gen lying about how he never lies.

If you've signed up to record a chapter, there's no time like the present.  Yes, I know you're busy.  Those who have not completed chapters in the past year or two can expect an email or LJ message asking if you still want to claim your chapters.  If your circumstances have changed and you no longer want a chapter, please leave a comment here and I'll pass it off to someone else.  If you'd like to record a chapter, leave a comment and I'll add you to the Sounis Waiting List.  Remember, there will be  lovelylovely chapters of a brand new book available soon!

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] twwcredits for uploading and hosting our files.

Hello everyone!

Based on popular reaction, we're doing it: a readthrough of all three books, in order. By my count we have about 8 weeks, which boils down to 6ish chapters a week, so we'd better get crackin'!

Here's how this will work: Every Friday, the person in charge of that week will post a short guide, with a few questions to start the discussion, and then we can babble away in the comments. The goal is to hearken back to the early days of the comm, where we dissected anything and everything we came across; don't be afraid to talk about something that might have been mentioned before, because we're always game for conversation!

At the end of this post I'll do a tentative reading guide, so if people want to claim weeks to lead discussion, they may. I'll do this week's, and then after that we can pass it around; if more than one people want the same day (I apologize for the fact that there are only eight), we can work something out. But first! The most important part!

Your assignment for this week: The Thief, chapters 1-7
Readaloud? Yes, for chapters 1, 3, and 7.

(I, for one, find the readaloud a great way to do something else with my hands while getting a chapter done. If you've signed up for a chapter in one of the later sections, this is the perfect opportunity to get it done! :-D)

The Plan
Week 1, 1/17-1/22: TT, 1-7, led by Jade
Week 2, 1/23-1/29: TT, 8-12, led by ?
Week 3, 1/30-2/5: QoA, 1-7, led by [livejournal.com profile] avian_xj
Week 4, 2/6-2/12: QoA, 8-13, led by [livejournal.com profile] ilysia_039
Week 5, 2/13-2/19: QoA, 14-21, led by Jade
Week 6, 2/20-2/26: KoA, Prologue-5, led by [livejournal.com profile] sgwordy
Week 7, 2/27-3/5: KoA, 6-10, led by TA and PR
Week 8, 3/6-3/12: KoA, 11-14, led by Jade

There's also an option for
Week 9, 3/13-3/19: Thief! and Eddis Short Story, if we want. :-)

I look forward to rereading the books with all of you! See you Friday.

p.s. on a totally different note, in case y'all haven't heard about it, [livejournal.com profile] help_haiti is a community doing a fandom auction in which fanworks are exchanged for donations to charities dedicated to helping the victims of the earthquakes in Haiti. I know we have a lot of talented people involved in a lot of different fandoms here, and so if anyone wants to shop or make offerings, it's a great place to go help. The first auction closes on the 20th, but they'll be doing another later this season. Just a thought!

p.p.s. a thought that occurred to me from reading [livejournal.com profile] sartorias's post: what can we do to help make the release of CoK Megan's best release yet? Brainstorm, we should have one.
[identity profile] not-like-judas.livejournal.com
I've been reading aloud the Queen's Thief series to my friend (who is called, oddly enough, Gen...), and we just finished the first one and I've just started reading the second book aloud to him. And and and we've been arguing about how old Gen is in the books. I've always sort of imagined it as him being 16ish in The Thief, 17-18ish in QoA, and then, like, 19 in KoA. I thought I would ask your Collective Professional Opinion first though. So, dear Sounisians (is that the correct term? Hmm.) what do you think?

Also, d'you think I should give Nahuseresh a Nasal, Annoying Voice, or a Cultured, Annoying Voice?

The Readaloud, an extremely unofficial online audiobook (yay for adjectives!) is back in business.

Our savior, [profile] twwcredits, has not only offered to host the existing readaloud files, but has gone ahead and transferred them over to their new home.  All the links should be working and you can listen to the chapters here.  You must join the comm before you can listen.

If you committed to recording a chapter, there is no time like the present.  New folks can claim a chapter, too, by posting a comment on this thread.
[identity profile] checkers65477.livejournal.com
For those of you who are new to [community profile] sounis,  there is an unofficial read-aloud of chapters from the books, done by various members.

Two things:

I.  The clever and  accommodating [profile] mycenaeth  has been hosting the readaloud audio files on a server for us.  Unfortunately, her server subscription is ending soon.  So, a couple of things.
  • If you want to listen to the chapters, or download them, you need to do it now.  In a few days the links won't work anymore.  I have all the files on my computer, but I'd feel better if other people did, too, so they are not lost.
  • Anyone have any suggestions as to where to keep them?  Do any of you have access to a server and would you be willing to host them?  I really don't know much about all this, but it looks like right now there are 16 mp3 files, each between 9 and 48 mb.
If you have any ideas, you can comment or send me an email and I'll give you more information.  A HUGE thanks goes to [profile] mycenaeth  for being such a gracious host!

II.  The lovely and talented [profile] jade_sabre_301  has completed another readaloud chapter.  It's Chapter 15 from Queen of Attolia.  For now you can download it here.  This link will be active for 7 days.  Go and listen to Gen propose to Attolia!

For the next few days you can listen to the older chapters here.  If you want to claim a chapter for your very own, you can do that, too.  There are a couple of chapters left and plenty that have been spoken for but not yet done.  Get busy, slackers.

You must be a member of the community to view the readaloud posts.
[identity profile] checkers65477.livejournal.com
The lovely and talented [profile] jade_sabre_301 is the first to finish a readaloud chapter from The King of Attolia.  It's Chapter 8 and it's short, but awesomely done.  Go listen to the king upset his physician, the queen faint, and Costis have an epiphany.

You must be a member of the community to view the readaloud post.  You can listen to it here.
[identity profile] checkers65477.livejournal.com
Another new chapter has been added to the community readaloud!  The lovely and talented [personal profile] adalanne has submitted Chapter 1 of The Thief.  You can listen to it here.  (You need to be a member of the community to access the readaloud.)

A few chapters of the books have opened up and are available if you had wanted to snag one but it was taken.  Go to the readaloud post and leave a a comment if you're interested.   Those of you who signed up to record chapters but who have been too involved in this thing called real life, ignore those obligations and dig out that mic.
[identity profile] checkers65477.livejournal.com
Two more fabulous chapters have been added to the community readaloud!

Chapter 7 of The Thief, read by [profile] scottykarrde, and Chapter 12 of The Queen of Attolia, read by [profile] jade_sabre_301.

You can listen to the chapters here, however, you must be a member of the community to access the readaloud.  If you want to claim one of the last open chapters, or you're sure you'll never get to do your recording and  want to give up a chapter, go here and leave a comment.

For those of you who have signed up to do chapters, there's no time like the present!

Enjoy!
