The holidays start to get a teeny bit boring? When you've finished all your books, re-read the entire Queens Thief series three times already, can't think of anything else to draw, all the paint has stopped drying and you can't watch it any more? That part of the holidays, too close to school starting again to go anywhere but still nothing to do. That's where I am right now holidaywise. You see, because we're homeschooled, we're not starting school for another week. So anyway, this is what I did to stop the boredom for a while.
Yeah, I was really bored. The two scrabble ones I did with Mac, and my cuzzie Tessietura. We kept running out of scrabble peices, so we had to keep using other letters. For example, Ostler is next to Laecdamon. If that helps. The first scrabble board are BAD Queens Thief people's and the board on the RIGHT are the goodies. :)
(I really need to take up another hobby. Like knitting for example.)
I REALLY hope that cut worked.

And then she'll get us to yell at each other again. Like when she asked us what nature was.

Date: 2/4/10 06:43 am (UTC)Asking for help is easier, because there are fewer people to help so the teacher/my mum, can help you if you need help. ALso, it's really lax. I often do my maths on the floor in the lounge so I can sit in the sun beam. Science on the trampoline. History on the couch. Etc.
The downsides are of course, alomost no social what so ever, I'm rather secluded. I prefer to stay in my room and draw/read/write/dance/ etc. There are lots of other downsides, but I don't really care about them much. so. :)

Date: 2/4/10 05:15 pm (UTC)Benefits: Freedom, both from the strict rules of schools that are aimed at the lowest common denominator much of the time, and freedom to explore interests that would not be considered "school." For example, I spent a lot of high school doing theatre, making chainmaille jewelry, playing violin, reading, being apprenticed to a carpenter, etc. Homeschooling tends to focus more on life skills than book learning; my apprenticeship has served me much better than my chemistry class. While the limited social life can be a negative, I found that although I had only a small group of friends they were all cool, nice people that I could choose to hang out with rather than a huge crowd that I had no control over. I also like how homeschooling showed me that the system is there to serve me, and if it isn't working there is no reason to just keep chugging along. After 2 1/2 years of college I have decided to take a year off and explore other options for my life. I feel like it was my homeschooling background that helped me realize that it is ok to do something unusual if that is what works for me.
Negatives: Hmmm...not many for me. I sometimes feel like I don't have the wide breadth of knowledge that my public schooled friends do, but that doesn't bother me too much.
Any other homeschoolers or homeschooling parents out there who want to weigh in?

Date: 2/4/10 07:34 pm (UTC)Oh. And the schoolwork-in-pajamas thing is not a myth. =D (For me, anyway, though I know families who've been stricter about dressing and sitting at a proper desk and such. That's the best thing about homeschooling: freedom to do what works best for you.)
