The holidays start to get a teeny bit boring? When you've finished all your books, re-read the entire Queens Thief series three times already, can't think of anything else to draw, all the paint has stopped drying and you can't watch it any more? That part of the holidays, too close to school starting again to go anywhere but still nothing to do. That's where I am right now holidaywise. You see, because we're homeschooled, we're not starting school for another week. So anyway, this is what I did to stop the boredom for a while.

Yeah, I was really bored. The two scrabble ones I did with Mac, and my cuzzie Tessietura.  We kept running out of scrabble peices, so we had to keep using other letters. For example, Ostler is next to Laecdamon. If that helps. The first scrabble board are BAD Queens Thief people's and the board on the RIGHT are the goodies. :)

(I really need to take up another hobby. Like knitting for example.)

I REALLY hope that cut worked.

I like that Attolia and the Magus are on both boards.

Seconded!

Oh, and did you know that Relius bares resemblance to Queen Elizabeth's principle secretary, Sir Francis Walsingham, also known as "Her Majesty's Spymaster".

Yes! I actually did know that one! It's interesting isn't it? Didn't Elizabeth raise him up in rank too?

And it's just the kind of fish is, too. All flashy.

|: I am more amused by "Nahuserfish" than I should be.

But I'm also being mentally scarred by Titus Andronicus, so amusement is preferable.

Probably something along the lines of, "Mwahaha."

Which is probably what my professor was thinking, too. |: I'm going to get to class tonight and she's going to be wearing her, "I scarred you for life and am so proud of myself" face. And then she'll get us to yell at each other again. Like when she asked us what nature was.

This is not related to the scrabble, which is awesome, but I was homeschooled too, all the way through high school.
Homeschoolers have more fun. :D

Homeschooling has always interested me, it can't be too much different from ps (public/private schooling?) But are there any specific benefits from it?

As a homeschool graduate who then went on to college, here are my two cents.

Benefits: Freedom, both from the strict rules of schools that are aimed at the lowest common denominator much of the time, and freedom to explore interests that would not be considered "school." For example, I spent a lot of high school doing theatre, making chainmaille jewelry, playing violin, reading, being apprenticed to a carpenter, etc. Homeschooling tends to focus more on life skills than book learning; my apprenticeship has served me much better than my chemistry class. While the limited social life can be a negative, I found that although I had only a small group of friends they were all cool, nice people that I could choose to hang out with rather than a huge crowd that I had no control over. I also like how homeschooling showed me that the system is there to serve me, and if it isn't working there is no reason to just keep chugging along. After 2 1/2 years of college I have decided to take a year off and explore other options for my life. I feel like it was my homeschooling background that helped me realize that it is ok to do something unusual if that is what works for me.

Negatives: Hmmm...not many for me. I sometimes feel like I don't have the wide breadth of knowledge that my public schooled friends do, but that doesn't bother me too much.

Any other homeschoolers or homeschooling parents out there who want to weigh in?

People tended to think that I was either a "problem child" or a genius when they heard that I was homeschooled... in reality, I was just like any other kid, with strengths and weaknesses and a preference for toys over school books. =) Homeschooling allowed me to learn at my own pace. I could jump way ahead in subjects that I enjoyed, like history and literature, and spend more time learning difficult subjects like math. I was able to join art and culinary classes outside of the home. Socially I never really had a problem... being able to arrange my own schedule meant that I had more opportunities to go places and meet people. I've had lasting friendships with other homeschoolers as well as kids in regular schools, different ages and backgrounds. Peer pressure hasn't factored into my decision-making as much, which is also a plus. Last but not least, I had my siblings. We have wide age differences but being homeschooled kept us close, and we've remained close as adults. I plan to homeschoool my own kids someday.

Oh. And the schoolwork-in-pajamas thing is not a myth. =D (For me, anyway, though I know families who've been stricter about dressing and sitting at a proper desk and such. That's the best thing about homeschooling: freedom to do what works best for you.)

It allows the parent and child much more freedom. This can be a good or a bad thing depending on how it is run. I have known some home schooled children who are never worked with and can barely read and do basic math. On the other hand, if it is run right, it will give a child the opportunity to do so many other things that he would not be able to do in a traditional setting. My brother was able to own his own lawn mowing business, learn how to tune pianos, play in a JR orchestra, and do many other things that he would not be able to do without the flexibility of home school. He was made to keep up on his school work, and was able to go to college and keep a very good GPA. The skills he learned while still in high-school allowed him to pay his way through college and have enough money left over for a down payment on a house. If a child does not have enough character to work on his own, or the parent does not want to spend time with him, homeschooling can be a disaster. Done right, it can be a wonderful thing.
