[identity profile] dannybailey.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] queensthief
Hello all! I am currently deeply and contentedly enmeshed in a rather arduous research adventure through the annals of the [livejournal.com profile] sounis community. I am attempting to create a history of the term "Queen's Thief" as a designation for the series. I plan on submitting the history to Greenwillow, and through them to Ms. Turner, for their consideration. You might consider this my plea to get them to make the name official. :)

Please help me out by answering this poll!

[Poll #1531956]

Thank you so much for your participation!

Queen's Thief series mainly. But sometimes I'll say "the series by Megan Turner". =D

King of Kings Series

Annux: Book 1, 2, 3, 4

Stolen Kingdoms (hehe)

Those are random titles I thought of, but I prefer Queen's Thief, and so I vote.

I was just thinking today how weird it would be if Greenwillow or whoever decided to give the series an official title that wasn't Queen's Thief. We use it around here so much and that's what it is to me...it would just be kind of sad. I think I'd still call it QT no matter what. :)

To be honest, I thought they were called Queen's Thief for the longest time before realizing that wasn't the official title. It would be so... odd if Greenwillow were to call them something else...

I call them the Queen's Thief the most, definitely. Or QT. When I'm talking to people who haven't read them, I call the the Megan Whalen Turner series, but that's ... not the catchiest name.
However, if I had to pick one for the series to actually be CALLED, OFFICIALLY, I would pick The Thief Series/books because it doesn't have any spoilers for TT. Even though I like Queen's Thief better. And I second Ilysia.

This. I called them that til I filled out this poll - didn't know they weren't called that.

Whoops!

I thought they were called the Queens Thief series as well. Rather a surprise when I learnt they weren't!

Well, on sounis of course I call it QT - but off line I usually call them, "you know, those books I'm always talking about".

I normally call them Queen's Thief because that's just...easy. Particularly since MWT has a non-QT related collection of short stories. It doesn't help that there's a popular video game series called "Thief" and I'm a sometimes-gamer, so if I call it "The Thief Series" it sounds like I mean the games...

In my head I say Queen's Thief but when I'm geeking out about it in real life, I have to say "those books by Megan Whalen Turner that I love" or I'll be met with blank stares.

I tend to call them "those Thief books that I like so much - you know, those ones I keep recommending to you, which you haven't read yet." To those few people who've caved in and read them, I generally call them "those Thief books."

I know it's the normal way to describe the series round here, but personally I don't like the series title "The Queen's Thief" since it has spoilers for the big reveal in the first book, and I am always very, very careful not to breathe a word about that big surprise when recommending the series. The Thief series of computer games were one of my favourite series of games ever, which is why I always say "The Thief books", not just "The Thief series."

ahaha,

I usually say just "Megan's Books" or just "The Books" (what do you mean there are other books? XD)

I call it the Queen's Thief series on here - or at least, I have since it became popular usage - but I don't want to spoil it in real life, so I call them 'My Favourite Books' or 'Megan Whalen Turner's Books' or 'Books You Really Really Really Need to Read'

I call them the Queen's Thief books now, but it's sounding like it won't fit well with the fourth book, and that ... bothers me, I guess. I don't know what I'd rather call them.

Like others, when i talk to my friends about them, I tend to say " the [insert-synonym-of-awesome]Megan Whalen Turner books"

Also, I'm influenced by the fact that I was a fan of the first book before there even was a second or a third book. You didn't need a series title back then, since there wasn't a series. If I love a book as a standalone, and then it subsequently acquires a sequel, I never seem to embrace any overarching series title that comes along later. I only seem to think of books by their series name if the series was complete when I started reading it.

I usually call them the Attolia books, because two of the titles have Attolia in them, so it's easy reference, non-spoilerish, and fairly accurate (so far every book spends at least some time in Attolia).

But I still like Leslie's suggestion of Shattered Inkpots.

Formally, I call them the Queen's Thief series, but I call them the Gen books occasionally, or I say to myself "I'll just have a sit down and read some Gen". Or something similar.

I think I used to call it "Megan Whalen Turner's Thief series" but that is a bit of a mouthful. I like "Queen's Thief." Simple, relevant, and just vague enough to not really be spoilery (I don't think so, anyway.)

Everytime I mention it in person, it's usually to my bf and sounds something like "Those books by my favorite author" which might be a bit vague for a series title... haha...

lol! Same here

or like "You know those Thief books I'm always talking about"

but I've always thought QT was official :]

Like a lot of people seem to, I call them "Queen's Thief" when I'm talking to people who already know what I'm talking about and "those books I've mentioned are my favorite ones ever? Yeah, those" to everyone else.

I support the idea of using a very brief name for the overall series, though. Like, I'll probably still call them Queen's Thief along with a lot of the people on this comm, but I'd like Greenwillow and Mrs. Turner just to call them the Thief books. No spoilers. Sweet and simple.

LOL! Exactly.

Series Naming

Date: 10/25/11 09:44 pm (UTC)
From: (Anonymous)
The upcoming German translation of the Thief series labels the whole series "The Legends of Attolia." (Book 1 being: "The Legends of Attolia 1: The Thief", book 2 being: "The Legends of Attolia 2: The Queen", etc.)

I don't know if this was agreed upon in consultation with Ms. Whalen Turner, but the naming makes some sense. (Especially given that in the books to come Sounis and – especially – Eddis will probably cease to exist in their known forms, and will be kind of incorporated in something like an Attolian empire ruled by Eugenides Annux.)
