Rowana raised an interesting point below in that it seems that some readers "who were unsatisfied with The Thief love QoA, and perhaps vice versa." And although QoA and KoA have been described as being more similar in tone, I have seen that some people who were turned off by QoA were actually brought back into the fold by KoA. All of which brings me to the following questions:
1. Does anyone here have a preference (strong, slight or no preference at all) for one of the books in the series? If so, which book is your favorite?
2. Did you first discover the books as a young adult (teens) or as an adult reader?
3. Did you read the books in order?
4. Were you spoiled in any way prior to reading any of the books?
5. Have you read the books more than once?

Date: 6/4/06 05:32 pm (UTC)King of Attolia is definitely my favourite. I think it's the best one. I like all of the books, but King of Attolia is the best.
Did you first discover the books as a young adult or as an adult reader?
Well, I was almost 18... so I'm not sure what that qualifies as.
Did you read the books in order?
Yes, thankfully!
Were you spoiled in any way prior to reading any of the books?
Nope!
Have you read the books more than once?
Not yet, I usually like to wait a while before I re-read books.

Date: 6/4/06 05:39 pm (UTC)*cringes* I did that once with Michelle Magorian's 'Cuckoo in the Nest'. :) How embarrassing. I think everyone here counts as a fangirl (gender regardless) of MWT anyway.
Just to answer the questions myself, I discovered 'The Thief' when I was 12 or 13. Read them in order but spoiled the ending of 'The Thief' for myself, and have re-read the first two hundreds of times. I don't have any preference.
It'll be interesting to see what everyone else says. :)

Date: 6/4/06 05:46 pm (UTC)I really do prefer QoA and KoA over the The Thief. I like its scope, the emotional angst of the characters, along with the unconventional romance and the larger roles given to female characters, such as Eddis and Attolia.
Did you first discover the books as a young adult or as an adult reader?
Adult reader. Picked up QoA based on a recommendation. I generally don't read a lot of YA and usually not without a recommendation.
Did you read the books in order?
No, I started with QoA, followed by The Thief and KoA.
Were you spoiled in any way prior to reading any of the books?
Yes.
Have you read the books more than once?
No, I've reread favorite parts. A reread is in order.

3. yes I read them in order.
4. I wasn't spoiled before reading them.
5. I've read them only once (so far).
I felt that QoA had too much related second hand - maneuvering by the various countries, reported rather than shown. Perhaps my memory overstates this, and I'll find feel differently when I reread it.

Date: 6/4/06 08:22 pm (UTC)2. Adult. I read a booktalk for QoA and thought it sounded good.
3. I read QoA first because all copies of Thief from both my library and the public library were checked out.
4. Yes.
5. I've read each of them many times.
And yes, I own a...few...copies of each. It's not an addiction, I can stop any time I want!
I just don't want to.

3. Yes, and I'm glad I did.
4. No, fortunately!
5. I've read both The Thief and King of Attolia twice. Now that I finally own a copy of Queen of Attolia, I'll probably do a reread of that one as well.

Date: 6/5/06 01:36 am (UTC)I read them all in order. XP I have no real strong preference for one over the other, although much of the QoA was dark and kind of depressing at parts. I have read The Thief about 6-8 times, QoA about 3 times, and KoA once.
The Thief has officially been my favorite book ever since I first read it. ^_^v

Date: 6/5/06 02:41 am (UTC)Queen of Attolia is my favorite. It was the first one I read, and at first I was horrified and hated it; I can't remember why I reread it, but I did and thought it was good.
2. Did you first discover the books as a young adult (teens) or as an adult reader?
Young adult.
3. Did you read the books in order?
No. I read Queen of Attolia, then the Thief, then King of Attolia.
4. Were you spoiled in any way prior to reading any of the books?
Aside from reading them out of order, I'd read part of King of Attolia online and knew the POV and basic premise before I started it.
5. Have you read the books more than once?
Yes, all of them.

Date: 6/5/06 02:42 am (UTC)God, that's a tough one. I really do love them all. I think if I were forced to pick just one, I'd go with QoA, because the angst is so thick and heart-wrenching. I loved it.
2. Did you first discover the books as a young adult (teens) or as an adult reader?
I read Thief when I was about 14 or 15 (I think). I didn't find QoA until a year or so later.
3. Did you read the books in order?
Yes!
4. Were you spoiled in any way prior to reading any of the books?
Not a bit. I loved the hit-me-out-of-nowhere plot twists. That negative review compalained about how there was a 180 shift at the end of The Thief, but I loved it. When the Attolian army parted ranks at the end of QoA I nearly fell out of my chair. It was my favorite part.
5. Have you read the books more than once?
Of course! I lost track of how many times. They don't ever get boring.

1. You own more than one copy of a book.
Oddly enough, I've had to buy at least three or four copies of The Thief because of loss/gifts. I lost QoA a few months ago and had to buy it again. (I got the new cover!) So I don't have more than one copy, but I've certainly paid for more than one.
7. You have written fan fiction based upon an author’s works.
:)
10. You see an author’s book at the store but refuse to buy it because it could hurt the author’s bestseller numbers or you buy it and go back and buy a second copy on the release date.
I don't understand this one. Why would buying the book hurt bestseller numbers?

Yes
4. Were you spoiled in any way prior to reading any of the books?
No
5. Have you read the books more than once?
Thief and QoA, yes. No for KoA, but it's on my to do list.
