As always, feel free to start your own threads, but be sure to hide spoilers with a warning under an LJ-Cut for at least a month from the release date of the new book. Not everyone is going to finish the book on the first day. :)

Use this thread with handy sub-threads to discuss the new short stories and poems. Simply reply to the comment with the name of the story or poem you want to talk about. There is a thread at the bottom for the extra content, such as the almond cake recipe and the art references, if you wish to discuss those. I've not included threads for the previously published and renamed?? short -stories, as we recently discussed those. Also, I don't consider discussing already published content to be spoiler-y, but feel free to start threads on those if you'd like to revisit them.

With all that out of the way, let's freak out in the comments! ;)

Table of Contents under the cut.

May I borrow your pen? )

Need a distraction from election news? It's been almost a month since Return of the Thief came out. Time for an official chat! Our first Conspiracy Room chat for discussing RoT will be this Sunday, November 8th.

4pm Pacific Time
5pm Mountain Time
6pm Central Time
7pm Eastern Time

The World Clock has more time zones. The password for the Conspiracy Room is HERE. Even after hundreds of comments, there's still so much to talk about! See you there.

SPOILER UPDATES-

As of November 6th, we will be unsticking the main RoT discussion thread. You can still use it, of course, but it's probably best to make your own threads for future RoT discussions, so your brilliant literary interpretations do not go unnoticed. :) If you need to find it for research purposes, there will be a link in the sidebar.

Also as of November 6th, no need to worry so much about spoilers. Everyone should have (hopefully) gotten their hands on their copies by now. So if you're still savoring RoT a page at a time and don't want to be spoiled, spoilers may start to pop up on the main page. Just a heads up!

Is anyone interested in helping create a "timeline" of events for the entire QT series?

*SPOILERS WILL ABOUND*

I realize many of the events have no specified time, but I still want to get things as straight as possible. I looked into different timeline creators online, but most of them demanded actual dates and few of them would be collaborative. In the end, I decided it would probably be the most simple solution to create a shared google doc and just add events in the form of a expanding table.

Anyway, if you want to contribute, click this link:

Someone in comments wanted an #ownvoices review, and aside from getting long, I wanted to post this where I can link back to it.

Under here! )

More thoughts to come, probably.

I have finished Return of the Thief, and really need to process this section from V2Ch3.  I was commenting on the main book discussion thread and realized my question was rapidly becoming too unwieldy for a simple discussion and decided to post as a separate thread.  I have tried this multiple times and haven't been able to get a single cut to work despite multiple approaches and versions, so I've done an lj-cut for each paragraph individually.

So the converstion between Sophos and Helen regarding whether Gen knew of Sounis's proposal and threat to give Hamiathe's stone to Gen if Helen proposed.  Which proposal are they talking about?  It sounds like it would have to be the proposal sent before The Thief that precipitated the events of the entire series, but then why on earth would Sounis choose Gen at this point?

While you're pacing the house, waiting for your precious copy of Return of the Thief, take a look at this synopsis of the entire series, written by Tor's Natalie Zutter. She does an excellent job of describing each book and how they all fooled us, and explaining the meanings of the different myths and stories. It's full of spoilers for the first five books, but I bet you've read them all.

More than once. Or, more than eight times, even.
[identity profile] ninedaysaqueen.livejournal.com
Congratulations, you have survived to this day, which, considering the year we've had...was easier said than done.

Welcome to the official Return of the Thief discussion thread. This may go without saying, but SPOILERS! I wouldn't venture inside till you have completed the entire book.

How to use this post-
(1) Use the chapter threads to discuss chapters and the events therein individually. Each chapter sub-thread has the first sentence of that chapter. Links to sub-threads in the sub-threads will be added as needed.

(2) Respond to the post itself to discuss the book as a whole.

(3) Reviews and other long, detailed posts about the book may be better served by a new post to the community. Just follow [livejournal.com profile] sounis's spoiler policy and you'll be as golden as Costis's ten cups. I will add links to those under the second cut as they appear.

(4) This post is currently sticky, and will remain at the top of the community for a bit, so it's easy for everyone to find the most active threads.

I speculate . . . I celebrate . . . I congratulate those with more willpower who haven’t read the sample chapters on Apple Books yet, but I really want to get my thoughts and feelings out, and no one else has started a thread, so let’s talk.

According to google translate, the Greek word for pigeon is peristeri. Pheris. I was imagining a fairly normal kid and I couldn’t have guessed that he would be totally unique and probably my new favorite character! I’m a special education teacher, and when I see characters with disabilities in fiction I’m like, “Yesss!” and then when they’re treated cruelly I’m like, “Noooo!” But Megan has already told us that “history is written by the winners” so yay for Pheris. His Exortium at the beginning lets us know that he will still be going strong after the events, and that his raw intelligence will grow into scholarship. I love that he says he will “dispense with the language of scholarship” and then proceeds to write in a very thoughtful refined way, describing the movements of bees, etc.

My heart breaks for Pheris’ nurse. Honestly I felt more gutted by these chapters than by the beginning of QoA. I know, I know, character development usually requires the mother figure to get ditched in the beginning of the story but IT STINKS! And it’s the mother/nurse that I cry for more than the kid. I would rather lose my right hand than lose any one of my kids.

Pheris could be quite the spy for Gen, as his intelligence is underestimated and people don’t want to pay attention to him. I picture him sneaking under tables, listening to conversations and ganaching Gen’s enemies.

How do you think Sejanus would react to Pheris being the heir? I can imagine him being murderous, but I can also imagine him laughing and saying, “you go kid.” He’s kind of a two-faced fellow.

These chapters have been so focused on Pheris that we’ve barely glimpsed our other main characters and we have nothing yet on the Medes, the volcano, the gods, Dite or Sejanus, or any of the other issues and loose ends that Megan needs to resolve. Looks like it’s going to be a long, satisfying book crammed with action.

What were your thoughts?

Some clever people on Tumblr have made graphs and flowcharts for their Return of the Thief wish lists and predictions—I, on the other hand, lack the brain power for anything more complicated than this bingo card.

(Image under the cut contains spoilers and speculations for RotT, including the Apple preview and MWT's 3 secrets. Comments will probably be spoilery as well.)

Just for fun! )

p. s. Can someone remind me when/where we're supposed to make our Where's Eugenides contributions? I've lost track of the original post. Thanks!

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

MWT just dropped three "secrets" about Return of the Thief on HarperTeen's twitter:

https://twitter.com/harperteen/status/1304108814690643968?s=21

The first one will have Sounisians exchanging knowing smirks. The other two... oh my gosh.

I can't wait for this book!
[identity profile] freenarnian.livejournal.com

(I jest. It's always been about winning for Gen. Winning hearts. D'aww.)

So, so, so... the discovery of this page (brief but awesome spoiler potential alert!) on MWT's website caused a minor sensation in the fandom, and seems to fit with a certain theory we've discussed here before. (Clue in the comments for those interested.) Again, spoilers for Return of the Thief! Read at your own risk of being hoodwinked once again by the unreliable narrator gods!

Edit: There are now SPOILERS in the comments, too.

Hello, Sounis! How is everyone?

Just thought I'd share this post by noratheodora on tumblr:

“During an argument with my father I’d sworn, in front of an embarrassing number of people, not to take a sword by the hilt unless my life was in danger.” (The Thief, chapter 12, using the e-book so I can’t find a page number.)

Okay. So Gen took an oath not to use a sword unless his life was in danger. This explains some of his behavior in The Thief, such as refusing to spar with Ambiades. But we later see him using a sword in The King of Attolia.

It’s true that he made this oath before he met the gods while stealing Hamiathes’ gift, but the tone of this quote makes it sound like he was more concerned with personal embarrassment about breaking the oath. Still, Eugenides’ reputation matters a lot to him, enough that I’d expect him to keep even a haphazardly made oath.

Then I realized. After Eugenides becomes king, his life is always in danger.

To which tumblr user tenney-shoes replied:

May I also remind, for your consideration, that when his life is a bit more blatantly in danger in the Queen’s Garden, he does not grab the Assassin’s sword/knife by the hilt.

Interesting observations, ay? I'll have fun taking a closer look at these details in my next re-read!

Hello Sounis! Long time no see. I finally read Thick as Thieves last week, then it took me another week to get my thoughts together to share with you. Spoilers abound!

Hi Sounis!!!

I have not been here in so long! I got locked out of both LJ and my backup email (what possessed my 13 yo self to set my security question to the last name of the maid of honor at my wedding is almost more of a mystery than my actual answer!) but anyway, I'm back! And bearing a discussion question, too!

So, Checkers and I felt we were getting a tad disorganized with our discussions of TaT and overwhelming ourselves, so here's a little order in the chaos. Below are all current Sounis spoiler-y threads for discussing TaT. I will add new ones as we go along. Feel free to start your own thread. Just remember to hide spoilers under an LJ-cut with a clear warning.

This thread will remain "sticky" (at the top) for a few weeks or so, giving everyone a chance to read the book and comment.

SPOILERS! LOOK AWAY! )

A very minor detail I was wondering about - spoilers below!

Eugenides sends Kamet a copy of a scroll of Enoclitus after his escape from Attolia. The name tickles my memory, but a brief skim through QoA didn't turn up a reference to that scroll. Does anyone remember (or have digital copies they can search) if we've actually seen Gen re-copying the scroll of Enoclitus before?

Because if so, frankly, I am just awestruck.

Hello everyone! Been watching the community for several years and figured it was time to log back in to LJ and join up proper, so hi. May see some of you Salt Lake folks tomorrow night!

Ever since I finished TaT Wednesday night I've been pondering the references to gods in the book. Last night (as I'm rereading but haven't gotten very far yet) I had an epiphany that has made me want to list everything I can remember (without my book in front of me) and see what you guys think and if you have any thoughts or additions!
