Last night my dad picked me up from my class, and we went out to eat. I had my backpack in the car with me, and all it contained were my textbooks, notebooks, and The Queen of Attolia, which I'm currently re-reading.

My dad said, "You'd better put your backpack in the trunk."

I replied, "Why? Nobody's going to steal it. There's nothing valuable in there, unless somebody wanted to steal The Queen of Attolia!"

I immediately realized what I'd said, and burst out laughing. My dad was a bit confused. I told him I was going to post it on livejournal, and they'd understand it. I think he was even more confused. :P

AhhhhHahahahahah! I love that my brother is into the books, so we can share joy. And now my friend as well. Obviously your father must read the books.

Fingers crossed, I may have two or even possibly all three sisters into the books soon. I'd given up on recommending anything for a few years because Eldest and Younger were more into Romance novels or stuff you "should" read "because it's a classic (and the book club is talking about it)," but Eldest was telling me about how she and Brother in Law went to see A Behanding in Spokane, which made me laugh, so I ended up tangentially recommending the books and she ordered them immediately and said she'd lend them to Younger as well, and Youngest is visiting them over Spring Break and I had mentioned them to her when she came to visit. (As there's no surfing involved, there's probably no point in pushing them on my brother.)

And I'm sure if my brother ran into her in Del Mar, he'd have something to say about the quality of the waves that day.

I finally convinced a friend to read the books, and she promptly started sending me long emails of a squeeing and geekish nature as she progressed through the series. Then her sister started reading them, then her brother, and now another fellow that is boarding with them. It may be a while before I see my books back on my shelf (they were borrowed by four people prior to this friend)... but that's okay, because adding 8 people to the fandom makes me feel rather smug. =]

ahaha, a slightly similar thing happened to me when I was looking for green thread and reading Philia's book which has "Emerald Thread" in the title. Anyway my friend asked me what I need to get and I said "I just need emerald thread" and then lol-ed.

Your story is way cooler though. I think Attolia would be glad to know no one wants to steal her away from Gen :P

Haha! That's great! I don't think anyone would have any more success than Gen has already had, though. And if he's so good at stealing things, he's probably pretty good at keeping them for himself, too. Lol.

That is so funny! I love these kinds of incidents, where you say something witty unintentionally.

Something like this happened with my mother. We were talking about someone and I said "She can be neither lead nor driven." My Mum was was very confused when I started giggling.

My sister has read the books, but she's a not a Sounis level fan. I bought a copy of The Thief for my nephew. We shall see how that turns out. *crosses fingers*

How old is your nephew? My eldest is getting close to Thief age *i think* but I'm not sure. I'm so afraid of giving him the book too young. I don't want to rush it and then ruin him for the series. Anyone have any suggestions on best initial age? Does it depend on the reader?

I read TT and QoA aged 11. I was hooked, but I was already a bookish child, and they'd been recommended to me by the children's librarian who was my faovurite person ever, so I was very willing to like them. There was a lot of stuff I didn't get at that age, though, and although I did figure some things out re-reading them in the following seven years, I was so used to my 11-yr-old interpretation of some events that it wasn't til I joined Sounis that I worked a lot of things out. So, I dunno, that was a down-side of reading young for me. But at least I got to read them! I think TT in particular is really good for young boys that age - my brother (who's 11) read them last year and loved them.
Ask our resident librarians!

My nephew's almost 12. I wasn't sure at first if he was mature enough to enjoy them, but then he told me he was reading Tolkien (I haven't even done that yet) and really enjoying it. I thought... okay... He's ready for The Thief.

He learned to read very fast, and he's already taken to reading avidly. (That apple didn't fall too far from the tree.) I'm sure he will enjoy it. He really likes clever characters like Gen. As for catching all the sneakiness, that's part of the reason I got him his own copy. I figure if it's lying around, he could be inspired to read it again once he is older.

I haven't seen him since I sent it, so I don't know if he has tried it yet. He said he was interested and would read it, though. I think he also trusts my tastes at this point. I don't think he has disliked a single book I've given or recommended to him.

As for the QoA, I'll have to explain to him about that one being a little bit darker. I not sure if he won't simply be confused by the Gen/Irene pairing. That level of forgiveness takes maturity to understand. I might give him Artemis Fowl first and see if he likes that. I remember that book feeling pretty dark to my 12-old-mind. If he really expresses interest in the series, I might go ahead and pick him up a copy of Queen and King anyways, but first I need to give him the copy of A Squire's Tale I finally found.

I believe it does depend on the reader. Age is somewhat relative. If a reader enjoys this type of book, I believe they will like it even if they don't get all of the sneakiness. The Thief is the type of book that can grow up with you. Gen can seem to be a numerous amount of ages, and the plot can take on new meanings with a more mature understanding of literature.

If your child has an interest in fantasy fiction, I would go ahead and tell him about the book and show it to him. If he takes an interest, he will probably enjoy it even if he is not quite yet mature enough to fully grasp the brilliance of the story.

If I had read TT when I was 12 instead of 15, I'm sure I would have still enjoyed it. After all, I read Pride and Prejudice when I was what... 14.

My nephew turned 12 yesterday (he's the eldest of the three and I plan to hook them all... pun intended:) but it sounds like I need to find out what he's currently reading and maybe that would be a good judge of whether or not he's ready for TT. Thanks to you both for the advice. I'm crossing my fingers...
