A quick reminder of the chat today--read all about it here!

I'm probably not going to make it today; lots of family stuff on the docket. We'll see!

/slinks in guiltily Let's pretend this isn't super late, shall we?

If you're like me and running behind the eight ball in life and in reading, don't worry! There is still time to finish The Queen of Attolia before the chat this Sunday, May 21st at Noon PT / 1pm MT / 2pm CT / 3pm ET. Let's all be traumatized together! :)

See the full schedule for the QT Reread HERE. Yes, we are rereading all seven books and discussing them in the Conspiracy Room. See you there, Sounis!

I'm rereading QofA for the millionth time, and stumbled on a question (as I usually do--it's why these books are so rich and lovely--they never stop giving, no matter how many times you read them).

You know that iconic scene from chapter 9, where Eddis arranges for a picnic on the mountain with Eugenedes and the Magus? It's an opportunity to send multiple messages to Sounis and Attolia (1. It was the Eddisians who stole the Magus and 2. To suggest something amorous between Eddis and Eugenedes).

For the entire picnic, Eugenedes is in a sour mood. On my previous reads, I didn't think much of it  because he was so often moody (and understandably so, considering all the trauma and ptsd and general mass of emotions). But Eddis seems to emphasize that she "knew the Magus wondered at [Gen's] bad temper." And, then, in the very next line, she explains: "We are sending a message to the QUeen of Attolia [about a supposed love affair between them]."

Is Eugenedes in a bad mood because he loves Attolia and doesn't want to send that message?

I'm asking because all the other reasons  (like being considered useless etc, and having to live with the reputation that he creates for himself) are discussed much earlier in the passage and therefore not seemingly relevant....

Our first chat was loads of fun! We chatted about TT and the first two (chronological) short stories. We even had an unexpected guest--Megan joined us for awhile. Of course, there were no spoilers for RotT but lots of great book discussion.

As we continue with our rereading, this week's topics of discussion are The Queen of Attolia and the short story Destruction. Scans of the short stories are available HERE for Sounis members.

The chat will take place on Sunday, Sept. 6 at this time:

4pm Pacific Time
5pm Mountain Time
6pm Central Time
7pm Eastern Time

Check the World Clock for more time zones.

Chats will take place in the Conspiracy Room. Password is HERE. All are welcome, but you have to be a member of the community to access the password. I can't promise any exalted guests, but hope to see you all there.

I hope everyone had a great time at the chat last night. I know I did! (Thanks for stopping by, Megan!) If you couldn't make it to the chat, no worries, transcripts are pending. Transcripts are here! Transcripts are members locked, so make sure you're signed in and have joined [livejournal.com profile] sounis.

This week we will be moving on to The Queen of Attolia and the short story, Destruction. Below is a schedule to help you finish the book on time.

I saw a poem on Tumblr the other day, and as I read over this portion of it again today, with Queen's Thief very much on my mind (as usual), I thought of The Queen of Attolia:

Please: take my wavering shadow, wrap it around your
knuckles, tuck in its end with your scarred, nimble thumb.
Wind it into your warm palm and cast it out behind us,
next to yours, two narrow sails, frayed standards, rippling
side by side.

You can read the whole poem, by LeighAnna Schesser, here, but I've quoted the part that really stood out to me. "Wavering shadow" makes me think of Irene, the shadow princess, and "scarred, nimble thumb" obviously makes me think of Gen, and the "narrow sails, frayed standards," of the war that breaks out between them, before ultimately uniting them "side by side."

Yeah. These characters give me feels.

The Kindle version of The Queen of Attolia is on sale for $1.99. Take a look on Amazon's site.

Yes, I've finally finished that elusive TaT playlist I've been talking about for like... two years. hangs head in shame

Anyhow, I hope it's worth the wait, as I've made not only one but three new playlists! Now with new and improved listen-ability! There are some old favorites in here, but also plenty of new stuff. It's been several years since I've made a playlist for these books, so there were many new songs to add.

I used Spotify to build these, but you need a subscription to listen to the songs in their entirity. I've included a link to the Spotifiy version if you do happen to have a subscription, but as I assume most of you probably do not, I've made Youtube playlists of all the songs.

If you're confused as to why I choose a particular song (some of them are for very specific parts of the books) there is a note for each song below. Enjoy!

Listen! )

Any songs you think I should add?

Got my new School Library Journal today and came across a familiar name--Virginia Duncan, MWT's editor. Megan's mentioned in the article, although it's about Newbery author Erin Entrada Kelly. That brought back a recollection of a fun blog entry from Shelf Awareness. It came out just after ACoK was published and describes not only how Virginia "hurled the book across the room in complete and utter disgust" after reading and being fooled by The Thief, but also how Megan got editor Susan Hirschman on board with what happens in QoA *. It's an interesting read, take a look.

*you know, the chop-chop part.

Remember that mysterious line from KoA that we investigated HERE and HERE?

“I hope you know that I could once jump from the palace to those roofs over there.” He eyed the empty space below him and said sadly, “If I tried now, I’d probably eviscerate myself when I landed. But it does give me an idea for what to do with you.” - The King of Attolia p335 (2017 paperback edition)

Mystery Solved! )

I don't remember seeing this when it was posted back in May, but here is a terrific review of the series, or at least the part of the series blogger Natalie Zutter has read.

This phrase struck a chord: "On a reread, the brutality of the amputation itself—a point of no return for the rest of the series, mere pages into the second book—made my stomach drop in a way that was wholly familiar. A mix of sick dread and macabre excitement..."

That's exactly how that part made me feel.

I hope she *finally* read KoA and the other books.

MWT saw the hegemonic patriarchal, traditionally binary stories of old and flipped them around upon their heads. Saw duality and gave us the spectrum of all infinite possibility and Oneness in its place:

This is quite possibly the greatest fanfic of all time: http://archiveofourown.org/chapters/478457?page=2&show_comments=true&view_full_work=false#comment_111179967

“Every single slight and annoyance from the day came flooding back, from being refused to accompany the hunt to disappointing her brother to Xanthippe’s stupid story to Phresine telling her the truth. Her frustration mounted in her until it could not be choked back any longer, and she ripped the wretched slipper from her foot and threw it across the room.“

Loathylady writes of the moment when young Irene, hurls her slipper across her room and it shatters her favorite amphora of hair oil, and she bursts into tears,… “as if her heart were throwing itself up against the bars of some cage.” …..

This fanfic is practically canon… my gods….

…..
It makes me remember her wedding night. If that hanging statement about being lachrymose wasn’t a direct fanfic prompt to the fandom from MWT, I don’t know what is.

A very minor detail I was wondering about - spoilers below!

Eugenides sends Kamet a copy of a scroll of Enoclitus after his escape from Attolia. The name tickles my memory, but a brief skim through QoA didn't turn up a reference to that scroll. Does anyone remember (or have digital copies they can search) if we've actually seen Gen re-copying the scroll of Enoclitus before?

Because if so, frankly, I am just awestruck.

As a spiritual, non-religious person the divine elements of MWT's Queen's Thief Series have touched me on more levels than I had ever though possible. MWT's fascination with the Greek gods and goddesses flows abundantly off her pages. While these tales of said gods and goddesses I left behind in grade school without much thought beyond their mythology, there is no doubt that her work is channeling Source Love... and it's a desperately needed proclamation that All Gods/Goddesses are One (and there is no difference between the 7 predominant religions of the world or any of the others.. all arrive at one singular goal, and that is that all things can ultimately come from a place of Love. I'm less referring to the consistent interactions that Eugenides has with his gods, and more to the godliness in the man himself, that behind the whining and the complaining and the superficial ungodly, unkingly elements of Gen's personality, he acts in the image of Christ. (and that contrast is what precisely what is fascinating about him).

There is such omnipotence in the essence of Eugenides' character and his Journey to "Love thy greatest enemy." That MWT could channel the Divine without ever saying the words (as she is known for) is simply exponential. Ecstatic.

You'll all have to chime in on this one because I have fewer examples.

The rules I play by (you don't have to): No proper names. No spoilers.
I think the perfect synecdoche in this game is an multi-layered inside joke to those of us who have read the series, but a serviceable (and spoiler-free!) summary for anyone who hasn't.

To get us started:

- Thinking of the river, he had no warning when a shadow appeared directly in front of him and he ran face first into a wall. (pg. 11)

- In the end, he prayed for help, any help, and left if for the god to decide what was best. (pg. 27)

- "What have you done?"
"Not much yet," answered the Thief from the darkness. (pg. 103)

I know some of you consider QoA your favorite, so I look forward to hearing your picks!
