Jun. 4th, 2006 04:46 pmI've just joined this comm, even though I've been a fan of the books for years, because I didn't know there was a livejournal community until recently. I'm glad to see that there are so many people who have enjoyed the books as much as I have! Umm, I'm terrible at introductions, so I'm going to jump into a discussion point instead. XD
Not too long ago, there was a thread about Eugenides' age. After much re-reading of QoA, I think I've figured out how old he is, though it's not perfectly exact. If one considers the Disney Adventures short story, Thief!, to be canon, Eugenides would be ten when Eddis becomes queen. This is supported by MWT stating that Gen is ten in Thief! (at the beginning), and the line in QoA: "Her [Eddis'] two brothers had died of fever within the space of a few days and she had become the heir to Eddis. Within a few months, she had become queen..." (pg 39). Since the events in Thief! take place after Eddis' brothers have died, it makes sense to assume that Eugenides is ten at the time of her ascension to the throne.
His age when Eddis first becomes queen is also supported by the paragraph on page 38, where Eddis describes how she had to move him from the dormitories after his mother's death. Since Gen was ten when his mother died, it would make Eddis very young to be queen, considering that she is not much older than he is.
So how can one get Eugenides' age from that? On page 140 of QoA, the magus mention that: "Her [Eddis'] legal reforms have changed Eddis more in seven years than anyone would have thought possible when she took the throne." Thus, we know that Eddis has been ruling for at least seven years, possibly a little more than that since it would take time to implement her legal reforms. Therefore, Eugenides would be at least seventeen (probably closer to eighteen or nineteen) towards the end of QoA. This would make him around sixteen in the beginning of QoA and fifteen in The Thief.
What do you guys think? I'm going to try and figure out Attolia's age next.

Date: 6/5/06 02:04 am (UTC)I'm really mixed on this. I always felt that Gen was a bit older than that, although I had no real reason to think so. I just wanted him older. Recently I've begun to think that he is just about exactly the ages you think. I'd feel better if he was at least 19 when he married, though, wouldn't you?
He had torn up his enrollment papers for the Eddisian Guard two years before Thief. I can't imagine he could enroll in the army at anything less than 15. Even that is pushing it. That would put him, at a minimum, 17 during Thief, 18 at the start of Queen, and 20 at the end.
You are quite the detective, and very logical and thorough. Now if you can just figure out what happened on their wedding night, we will all <3 you very much.

Date: 6/5/06 02:45 am (UTC)Eep, sorry for such a long-winded response. Thank you for bringing up such an interesting point, I had forgotten about the papers though they've been mentioned twice. Again, my numbers are not definite, and I would lean towards Eugenides being possibly a year or two older, but at least we know he's not thirteen! XD
You're too kind! *blush* I think that would be an intriguing challenge, though we probably won't know until MWT chooses to reveal it. Gen and Attolia's wedding night would make an excellent short story.

Now THERE'S an idea!

Date: 6/9/06 03:17 am (UTC)Just a quick comment on your reference to ancient Greece. Actually I believe the custom was for men to be married in their thirties to women in their late teens. I'm not sure if this tradition would apply to the books, but if it does it would explain why Attolia- and many others, like her attendants- consider Gen far to young for her. In a time where husbands were usually much older, but certainly older, it must have been very uncommon for a wife to be younger than her husband.
I just found this interesting to think about. Of course it doesn't affect your reasoning for Gen's actual age. Thanks again!

Welcome to the community! I adore new people. =)

Date: 6/5/06 02:49 am (UTC)That sounds like it would be a fun task. I do need a creative outlet for obsessing over this series. I thought that there was already a timeline (I recall seeing one in this comm several entries back) but I would be more than happy to compile one if needed. It might also be useful to compile a list of descriptions for each character?
I look forward to participating, it seems like there's a great group of people! ♥

Excellent deductive reasoning. If you can figure out Attolia's age that would be pretty cool. :)
