Is anyone interested in helping create a "timeline" of events for the entire QT series?

*SPOILERS WILL ABOUND*

I realize many of the events have no specified time, but I still want to get things as straight as possible. I looked into different timeline creators online, but most of them demanded actual dates and few of them would be collaborative. In the end, I decided it would probably be the most simple solution to create a shared google doc and just add events in the form of a expanding table.

Anyway, if you want to contribute, click this link:

Barnes & Noble's teen blog includes a review of Thick As Thieves, along with an interview with Megan from the recent meetup near DC. The review is filled with spoilers, so only click on the link if you want to see all that.

Review link--Here There Be Spoilers!

For everyone else, I'm including the interview for those who don't want to be spoiled. It was written by Jenny Kawecki, who may be one of our own, who knows? The only spoiler it includes is the name of the person who narrates TaT, which most of us already know.

Interview is here... )

Several of us got to attend a meetup at a Barns and Nobel this week and I thought you might like to hear about it.

She was very careful not to give any spoilers for Thick as Theives, so it's safe to read on.

Megan spoke for an hour, telling stories then answering questions from the crowd. Then she signed our books and took pictures. She started by talking about Rosemary Sutcliff; her life story and writing inspirations. She talked about how as a child, Rosemary Sutcliff was sick in the hospital where boy and girls, as well as the books for boys and girls were kept seperate. Since Rosemary didn't like the books chosen for the girls, she was inspired to write her own adventure stories.

She answered questions about things like how the POV keeps changing in each of the books. She said she doesn't think she could ever write from Irene or Helen's perspective because they are "perfect" (her words) and would either seem fake or not relatable. She cleverly refused to answer questions about how old any of the characters are or what the Minister of War's name is. (Although it seems he does have a name and one other person besides herself knows it.)

If anyone wants to know more, or see pictures, let me know.

So I remember a while back someone made a really nice, detailed post about the ages of the characters. It went along the lines of Eugenides was 16 when the events of The Thief occurred, which made Eddis Helen 21, and Attolia Irene would be a couple years older (probably). I assume that there's a gap between TT and TQOA of maybe a year or so, because Eugenides is a little more mature, even before he got his hand cut off.

ANYWAY, I was reading a passage from TQOA earlier, and it said:
"For two years he had been trying to build his defenses against her..."
Two years. Does that refer to the beginning of TQOA? After all that would make sense, considering how much they talked about the harvest in the differing seasons.

So that would mean that the events so far took place like so:
The Thief: a month or two (don't have my copy on hand, I lent it out. Yay!)
intermission of about a year
The Queen of Attolia: happened over two and a half years
The King of Attolia: took 3 or more months
Because of the part where Irene and Gen are talking about how he promised her the fall of Erondites in six months, but achieved it in 98 days.
As for TCOK, we know that the first half of Sophos's story happened during TKOA, and I think the latter half would probably happen directly after TKOA. Again, I lent my copy :(

But I honestly haven't done more than a little research, and this is really just to find out how you all feel about the timeline and such. Also, does anyone know where the names of Eddis, Attolia, and Sounis came from? All the names MWT uses are really interesting and I know there are often meanings to her selection (because she's awesome like that).

This has been debated for a long time, but I thought that there is some evidence i should type out before I forget it all in my scatterbrain-es. (That is probably not a word) Anyway, from the short story Eddis, she is 9, and Gen is 4. Therefore, we know that she is 5 years older than him. Next, Eddis has been queen for five years, if my memory serves me correctly, so she should have taken the throne when she was 15, I think. Also, in Thief!, Gen is 10, and she would be 14, and her brothers and father was dying or dead already. Now, we know that Irene is not much older than Helen, but ruled longer than her, so I think that it is safe to say that she was probably 16 in her first marriage. And since she was engaged and married younger than Gen, that means Gen is only 14-16 in QoA.

???

Okay, I give up; it is too late on my side for my brain to be functioning. Your thoughts?

After I finished reading all three books, I dished them out to all of my close friends and they responded with mostly positive results, except one. My loser of a friend has a problem with the romance between Attolia and Eugenides, and not even the awesomeness of KoA won her over. Her problem is their age difference and the fact that she cut off his hand. Unfortunately, her reaction made me so angry that instead of responding with my usual snarky and witty comeback, all I did was turn red, sputter, hang up the phone and then I proceeded to chuck my phone across my room. Since I cannot come up with anything on my own, I have called out to you guys, the highly esteemed members of Sounis, to help me convince my friend that Attolia and Eugenides' relationship is the best one around. My plan is to scribble your ideas onto note cards, and then the next time I find myself in a position of blushing and sputtering, I can magically pull out the cards and recover myself with snazzy arguments provided by you! I know that one of you posted an essay on how their relationship isn't masochistic, and I plan to go digging for it. It is a very serious situation, as her problems with Attolia and Eugenides damage her enjoyment of the books. I would be much obliged if you would all help me! And my friend, for that matter.

'Lo all- here's a bit of a question that's plagued me for years, ever since I read the first book:

How old do you see the characters in the book as? There's never any real indication, and we're mostly left to infer the ages of characters through details.

Example: Ambiades is treated by the magus and Pol as mostly adult. Perhaps one of the most telling clues is how the adults treats him. Pol speaks to him about mutual subjects of interest like he would another man (such as swords), but he's not above taking Ambiades down a peg if he needs it. The magus still lectures Ambiades on geographical features of the lands, so it's clear that he's still in tutelage, but Ambiades is also old enough to get away with being sullen with the magus. The So for this, I imagine him to be around the 17-19 range. Old enough to be considered reliable, old enough to be an apprentice to the magus, but not old enough not to need adult intervention.

What are your thoughts?

Hi, everybody!

My sister Mary, my friend and colleague Maria, and I just had the most awesome conversation with MWT! We recorded it for a podcast, but, since Megan was extraordinarily generous with her time, we have cut it in two, and we'll be making two podcasts out of one interview!

I just put the first podcast up on line, and you can access it here

Enjoy, everybody! The second half will be up soon!

I've been reading aloud the Queen's Thief series to my friend (who is called, oddly enough, Gen...), and we just finished the first one and I've just started reading the second book aloud to him. And and and we've been arguing about how old Gen is in the books. I've always sort of imagined it as him being 16ish in The Thief, 17-18ish in QoA, and then, like, 19 in KoA. I thought I would ask your Collective Professional Opinion first though. So, dear Sounisians (is that the correct term? Hmm.) what do you think?

Also, d'you think I should give Nahuseresh a Nasal, Annoying Voice, or a Cultured, Annoying Voice?

There seems to be a fanfic vibe going around that needs info on Gen's family. XD

I have a couple questions, if anyone can help?

1)  How old was Gen when his grandfather died?  Do we know?

2) What about when his mother died? [EDIT:] I just re-read the book and answered this for myself. XD

3)  If Gen's mother died, the King died, Helen became queen, and Thief! was written ALL when Gen was 10, why are none of these mentioned in connection with each other?  I know it's perfectly by possible, but....

THNX GUYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
[identity profile] katewaits.livejournal.com
Gen is pretty small.  Even in KoA the attendants and guards refer to him as their 'little king'.  But the other male members of his family that we've met have been quite big.  His father (IIRC he's pretty big), as well as Aulus and Boagus (who I loved for threatening to lie on top of the covers on either side of the KoA so he won't be able to move -- LOL), who are huge.

Now here's what I wonder.  Has the stress his body has endured from a young age stunted his growth?  Or might we expect another growth spurt to go along with other developments in CoK?  I've personally known people who put on as much as six inches in height within a year's time after 20.  Do you think that's possible for Gen?*

Also, (and I'm sure this has been discussed here, I'm just not great at navigating LJ, yet -- sorry!), how old do you think Gen is?  Has there ever been a confirmation? He had already rejected the army by TT, but hundreds of years ago, it wasn't all that strange for members of royal families and other aristocrats to join the military at very young ages.  I figured him at around 13 for TT, 16/17 for QoA and 18 for KoA.  Or thereabouts.  Am I way off?

Anyway, that's what I've been thinking about while I'm waiting.  I almost wish I didn't know CoK was coming in 2010.  It's making me very obsessed.  o_O

*ETA:  I realize the way I wrote this makes it seem like I want Gen to grow as big as his father and/or his cousins.  But I don't .  And I don't respect him less because of his size.  I'm just wondering if it's another physical change he'll have to learn to work with.

Just wanted to greet the community before I started posting. I am a long time Thief fan *cough obessive cult leader cough and was so glad to find this site when trying to figure out what granched really meant (thus establish me as a truly nuts fangirl)
I wanted to give my great thanks to the people who posted the stories online. I own the hard cover of KoA rather than the soft-cover so ...no fun happiness. I'd looked obessively for the stories but hadn't been able to find them so....Be blessed in your endeavors!
Lastly, I emailed Megan about exactly how old Gen was exactly and she wouldn't tell me ;) However.... I think I've figured it out doing some very careful caculating, but I want to see if anyone knows officially.

Nonetheless...

(Apologies in advance if I am blatantly repeating stuff you've all figured out years ago.  I've looked about and not seen much, but that doesn't mean it's not there.)

Ok, so I've been thinking rather excessively about Gen's family lately, particularly his mother.  I think it would be amazing to get to know her a bit; I get the impression that a lot of Gen's characteristics might be hers (aside from skill with swords, etc., although who knows?) and that she would have the same...fierce but fascinating personality.  Not that I think Gen is excessively fierce, but he can be scary.

Enough babbling.  As a result of my aforementioned thoughts about Gen's mother, I've been thinking about her death, which was reportedly from a fall out of a window in the palace when Gen was young.  He says (to Sophos, I think) in The Thief that she had been dancing on the roof of the palace and slipped coming back in.

Fast forward to KoA, where Gen tells Attolia that he learned to dance square dances from his mother.  He says, "We danced them on the rooftops of the Megaron.  According to legend, the Thief and any partner the Thief chooses will be safe."  (p100 in the hardcover KoA).

Obviously, since his mother wasn't the official Thief, the safety rule didn't apply.  However, I'd always wondered why she'd been dancing on the roof anyway.  I mean, all right, if Attolia can dance in the kitchen gardens, Gen's mother can dance on the palace roof.  But it seems logical to me, knowing what we know now, that she would have been dancing with someone.  Like her son?

I feel like we might have heard more about Gen's mother's death if he had happened to be around, but it may be worth a thought.  I'll probably wake up tomorrow and think about this in a completely different way, though, so who knows?

Go ahead.  Tell me I'm reading things into the text that aren't there, and that I should stop trying to make Gen a tragic hero.  (Hero he is, tragic...hardly.  Anyone who can make me laugh that hard can't be tragic.)

...To write a long and convoluted post as my first to Sounis. I hope this is alright!

I have just finished "The King of Attolia," and before I process my thoughts on the book itself, I wonder if I could pose a question to the wise readers here at Sounis. This has been bothering me throughout  the series, and now that I have (alas) finished, I feel I ought to ask.

So. Why is "The Queen's Thief" marketed as Young Adult literature?

To clarify, by this question I do not, in any way mean to imply that true YA or Children's novels are precluded from brilliance. Anyone who has read enough of these overlooked genre is well aware that there are many, many spectacular books that fit into this category. What I mean is that this series (specifically the latter two books) simply don't seem to fit into what are, as far as I can tell, the general boundaries for YA literature. I am certainly not a publishing expert; I merely speak as a curious reader.

Interestingly, I do think that "The Thief" fits better into the YA category than into general adult fantasy, for the following reasons.
  • The plot is fairly linear, following a journey/quest style narrative.
  • The main character is, while not quite a child, most likely around older-adolescence.
  • Other characters in the story are children or peers of the main character.
  • A mentor-figure is present in much of the story.
  • The quest carries "coming of age" implications.
None of these points alone makes a story a YA novel, of course, but I think here they do combine to fairly classify "The Thief" in this category.

Contrast this with the next two books.
  • The plots are anything but linear; they follow the characters lives, rather than a specific journey.
  • Eugenides may still be an adolescent, but there is little childishness about him in QoA. (He does come across as slightly younger in KoA, but I would hesitate to still call him a teenager.)
  • None of the supporting cast are children, in fact, all are notably senior to Eugenides, with distinctly adult responsibilities.
  • There is no significant mentor figure.
  • Eugenides certainly grows and changes through his struggles, but, at least to me, it seems that he is dealing with 'post-coming-of-age' difficulties.
  • And of course, it is worth noting both the increase in violence and political complexity in QoA and KoA, giving these books quite a different tone than "The Thief." (I wouldn't say that this rules out classification as YA, but I think it does represent a shift.)
The only real reason I can come up with for the continued YA classification is that perhaps the publishers did not want to split up the series into different genres. What do you all think?

Ages

I've wondered this for a while.
I have my own ideas about ages of characters, but I'm interested in seeing what others think. How far off am I, in your guys's opinions?

Thief Gen: 17
QoA/KoA Gen: 18-20 (Since QoA covers a few years)
QoA Eddis: 24-26
QoA Attolia: 27-29
Thief Sophos: 15
Thief Ambiades: 18 (I know it says 'a few years older' than Gen, but I see Ambiajerk as trying to look older that he is. This just make more sense to me.)
Thief Magus: 39? (The Magus is the hardest for me. I first assumed he was fifty or so, but that would make the people shipping Eddis/Magus almost unhealthily reprobatish, and he probably wouldn't be as good a soldier as he supposedly is. So I'm going with this, because... I can.)
QoA Magus: 40-42
Costis: 24 (When he's introduced)

What'da y'all think? I'll update it if we come up with anything definate.

So I have a question regarding Gen's family. I know it's been discussed a little before, but we need more in-depth discussion.

How many siblings does Gen have? Where is he in the order of siblings? I always assumed that he was the baby of the family (he seems to have that youngest-child mentality...), especially as what is said about his family is that he has "Brothers and sisters. With the same father." And that "One of [his] brothers is a soldier, and the other is a watchmaker." Now, we know that Sten is older than he, and as Temenus is the same age as Eddis, well, he is obviously older as well.

What I'm really looking for is information on his sisters. More importantly, does he have any younger ones? Given that what is said about his sister is that they are "even married, and honest housewives to boot," I wouldn't think that they would be any younger than he, since <14 seems just a little young to be married and a housewife.

We need this to settle a troublesome discussion with someone about whether or not Gen has a younger sister who might be a Thief. It just seems... doubtfull.

Hi there, I've just finished the three books (checked out from the library), promptly ordered all three from Amazon, and am delighted to discover this comm. MWT was rec'd to me by [livejournal.com profile] pcw_rcw via (I believe) [livejournal.com profile] ekblack -- thanks to all of you!

Looking through the posts here, I was most interested to read the discussions of characters' ages, because I found myself revising downward my conception of Gen's age as the stories progressed -- an odd sort of mental adjustment to make. Aged about 15 at the beginning of TT seems about right to me too, and it helps to explain why he's so fixated on food when he gets out of the King of Sounis's prison -- they hadn't been feeding him very well and he's a growing boy! :)

One speculation about KoA, Irene fainting in the aftermath of the assassination attempt. Granted that she would feel distraught at seeing copious amounts of Gen's blood, and no doubt it was an unpleasant reminder (to say the least) of the last time she saw same, but fainting dead away?? Did anyone else get the wee-est suspicion that she might be preggers?
[identity profile] sandtree.livejournal.com
Okay, I know that this has been discussed and discussed and discussed again, and then discussed some more, but I finally got the paperback of KoA today and read the Eddis short story (I'm a bit slow), so it got me thinking (dangerous).

My point is, it seems we basically have an answer for the age of Eugenides now, right? Because the short story says there's a five year age difference between him and Eddis, and if he's ten in that other short story in which Eddis is about to become Queen (which I've never actually read, so I could be off), and in The Thief, Eddis has been Queen for five years, then Eugenides is fifteen in The Thief, and Eddis is twenty.

My OTHER reason for posting, is, I just noticed that in QoA, Eddis tells Eugenides to steal peace, and Attolia's name (Irene), means peace, and he steals her. This was probably completely obvious to everyone but me, but like I said... slow. XD

Okay, back to your regularly scheduled... stuff.
