Order it from bookdepository.com. They're selling it for $11.49 and!! FREE SHIPPING! No minimum amount to buy. It took 18 days for it to get to me from the UK, though, so it was annoying to be the last one to get it and read it.
But if you live in the UK, it would get to you a lot sooner.
I've already got it off amazon. Arrived v. fast in 3 days. I just like seeing it all pretty there on a shelf so I can go gush to the bookstore people about it XD
Just to plump up the book depository. Someone recommended it to me a few months ago and I've been buying many of my books there now because of the free shipping.
It took only a week and half to get here to Toronto and with free shipping it was cheaper then buying it online in Canada. And faster shipping.
But it was a long week and a half of checking the mailbox.
Lets band together and squander the rest of our money buying her books just so we can knock Hunger Games out of the #1 spot.
My bookstore always has a copy of The Thief, and they just put in a bunch of ACoK copies. They never have QoA or KoA, and I can't help but think they are making the best part of the series unavailable to people. Obviously the book industry needs to be taken over by the Sounis community. I say we plan an attack.
Yay! That is all I have to say. Oh, except that I would join the attack as well, if we could all decide on a specific week to do it so that I can get down to a bookstore.
I remember making a comment about mwt release book to make it on a best seller and it is!! Yay
Ya, I don't get why ppl order online when you can quickly pick it up at a local bookstore the day it comes out! I understand if you don't live anywhere close to one or its not being published whereever you living at.
I'm happy that the library was actually decently fast enough to order them and now the copy I hold for fun when I already bought one is being shipped to my local library! Yay!
>>I don't get why ppl order online when you can quickly pick it up at a local bookstore the day it comes out! <<
Discounts. Huge discounts! And, depending on who you order from, no sales tax (10% in some areas). And, best of all .... sometimes when you preorder, you can get it before the laydown date!
yea the benefit i see is book store calling you in to pick it up!
As for discounts..that failed now. Yes there's discounts but they made a new damn rule about no pre-order of books can allow free shipping! so when you add that amount in, it cost more than to buy the book online than at the store, so i opt for the store day. I think i go hold book next time to pick up! And it was good, i got the discounts from the store b/c they were doing their march break sale event! There's not much independent bookstore I know off from where i live, its all own by Indigo Inc.
I don't know where you live, but I used bookdepository.com. They do give discounts, are UK-based, and ship FREE to a lot of countries with NO minimum orders. The bad part is it took 18 days to get after they shipped, so I got it a week after the lay-down date. An internet friend says sometimes she gets pre-orders 'way before the laydown date, so it's a bit of a crapshoot.
"Chapter book" drives me *crazy*. the teachers seem to use it to mean "fiction book" (as opposed to a picture book). But lots of picture books (Frog & Toad, e.g.) have chapters. And so do nonfiction books. They need to tell the children specifically what they want, instead of being lazy.
And nine year olds are TOTALLY into the unconventional romance and the complex political intrigue.
(I'm not saying that nine year olds aren't smart! *ducks projectiles* I'm just saying I don't know of any who are at a point where they would appreciate these things--most I know would be put off by them. )
I'm sure there are some out there, I just don't know any personally. I just loaned the first two to an 11-year-old. I first read them when I was 12, but I was still wary of giving her Queen. The beginning is a bit disturbing, and it gets really politically complex.
Anyone know any 9-year-olds who have read these books? We should start a competition to see who can get the youngest people to read and enjoy them. :D
I noticed that as well. I'm definitely not in the 9-12 age group. And I still don't understand everything in the book after reading it twice. Hmm. Maybe you can only understand if you're young?
That'll teach the bookstores in Montreal! I swear, I got the only one in downtown Montreal on March 23. ONE Coles had ONE copy --and I was with a friend, so we needed two! We tried independents, chapters, everything. There was only one. Chapters had some on order --three, to be exact.
It makes it all the more coveted, but still. ONE! Montreal is a BIG CITY with Plenty of anglo readers. *sigh*
And yeah, neither Borders in my area had the new book in stock the day it was released. Which was fine, because the independent bookstore was holding one for me. But they had only three, which they were holding for preorders, and the lady said they'd had others wanting it that they had to say no to. So disappointing.
AND I'm getting quite a kick out of the NY Times's short, one-sentence blurbs for the books on the list. How would you like to have the job of writing those???
I guess I'm pretty alone in having the closest bookstore well stocked with copies of ACoK... and the other three while they were at it. I knew it was a good bookstore.

Date: 4/2/10 11:16 pm (UTC)And why on earth wouldn't a store stock it (as they didn't in my area)? She's a Newbery Honor author, for Pete's sake!
Maybe if they put dragons and vampires - or vampire dragons - on the covers...
