I have a (very long) theory on popularity that I started formulating in the middle of the Top 100 YA novels - reader voted - list. Basically, if we would do these every year, there would always be certain books or characters that drastically shift position, because their little stint in the spotlight finished.

(But Eugenides will endure, is all I'm saying. Also, there's no way that The Hunger Games will forever top a YA novel list.)

I haven't read Hunger Games either, and I hear they're awesome (although I heard similar things about Graceling, and everyone's fangirling Katsa, and I was severely disappointed), but I feel like Gen has experience that, from what I know of the series, Katniss lacks.

I just really, really love aspectabund, so hard. (Also I feel a little that way, because it will represent a triumph of YA literary taste over a three-way popularity contest between Alanna [mother of the genre of badass fantasy fighting females, and therefore automatic winner of said contest if there were justice in this world], Katsa [who is so made of fail that I cannot begin to disparage her], and Katniss [who may or may not be awesome, but who again, would have to lose to Alanna].)

Oh yeah... And Beth. I'm well into PD, and it's great. I can't wait to finish it.

It kinda got interrupted by the new AF and college, but I'm getting there.

Just my opinion here, but:

People fangirl Katsa because it's great to have a strong, independent female character. That didn't necessarily make for strong writing or pacing.

And The Hunger Games is decent, and Katniss is a good character (and Catching Fire is better), but she's also a teenager with good luck and there's no way she would beat Gen.
