Possible Sophos? Yes? No? Maybe?

It may be just because he's a slave with blond hair, but the first time I saw this trailer I immediately thought of Sophos:

He's got that fierce look, yet cute innocence thing going on...or maybe that's just my memories from Billy Elliot playing with me. Actually, the more I look at him the less I think of Sophos, but when I look away, my memory morphs his face into Sophos's. Hmmm....

THIS IS EAGLE OF THE NINTH! Based on the book by Rosemary Sutcliff, an author mwt has mentioned frequently. (You prolly already knew this, but I just got excited. This is one of my favorite books, and I'm looking forward to the movie even though it looks like they have...taken liberties with the story.)

Anyway, to your actual posting topic.
I'm not one who has really clear images of characters in my head, so I can't say that it looks just like the Sophos in my head, but I can totally see how he could be Sophos.

I actually did not know this...and I'm VERY excited to find this is a book! It looks like such a good movie in terms of theme. The concepts between slavery and friendship and how they can merge, and of betrayal and whatnot. Even if the movie ends up being bad, I think it will be at least be great thematically.

See, that's actually what they change. In the book Marcus and Esca are very good friends by the time they set off. But their relationship is still very interesting. You should read it. She's my favorite historical fiction authors.
ALSO! There is an item in that book which mwt copied in The Thief, and there is also an indirect quote, although I haven't figured out what it is yet. But she talked about it in the extras of the new paperback Thief.

FINISHED. Took me awhile - school ruins life - but I did it...and I loved it!! Esca and Marcus have to be one of my favorite duos of all time now! Although I did have difficulty keeping all the Roman names straight...

Isn't it great? I adore that book, and every time I see the preview for the movie I want to go read it again--but then I remember the stack of books I've never read before sitting on my desk. I wish I could spend all my reading time with my old friends sometimes. AND I really want to read it and try to find the line mwt paraphrased in TT.

If you like Rosemary Sutcliff you should read "Knight's Fee," which I think is her very best book, and "Warrior Scarlet," another favorite.

Yes, it looks like they took some liberties but still I'm excited.

It also explains why I got an email from Amazon today saying they suddenly (after more than a year) have the book in stock. I thought that was kind of strange all of a sudden.

Jamie Bell is indeed quite awesome - he was awesome in King Kong and awesome in Jumper... and he's a great actor. And cute.

But he's also like in his mid-twenties now....

Really? Was it good? I always liked the first half of Jumper better than the second half, and I like the very practical way the idea of teleporting is carried out.

I just read the sequel to Jumper. I liked it in the way that I liked Jumper--I like how thoroughly imagined it is. He explores every aspect of what it would really be like to teleport. I like all the detail. And it's fun to read books about attractive, hip young people. :-)
