This is what happens when Chats Go Awry. Or just when five people actually turn up. :) On topic discussion, as well as Zucchinis (Courgettes!).

Willow from x.x.x.188 joined the chat 40 minutes ago
Willow: *lurks for chat*
Willow: That link to the Gail Gauthier (sp?) site made a good point about the outcry that would have arisen if the genders had been reversed in QoA.
Willow: But at the same time... I don't think it would have bothered me. That is, not any more than it did as QoA stands now (I was horrified and sickened when I read it at first; I'd not read the Thief.)
Avian from x.x.x.71 joined the chat 38 minutes ago
Willow: Hi!
Avian: hi!
Avian: yes, it would have been alot different if the genders were switched
emerald from x.x.x.103 joined the chat 36 minutes ago
emerald: hello
Willow: hi!
Avian: hey
emerald: im new here but ive talked to Rowana - she's in the same time zone
Willow: Although if it was just the gender switch, I think a lot of people would be more upset by the age gap between... um... Eugenidia and Attolis.
Willow: Welcome :-)
Avian: lol
emerald: its great that we have this cuz otherwise i would be having mwt withdrawal symptons
Avian: but then, if attolia were a guy, she wouldn't have had as much trouble keeping the throne
emerald: its great that we have this cuz otherwise i would be having mwt withdrawal symptons
Willow: True
Avian: and she could've just had gen hung
Willow: And, with the gender switch, I think the Attolia-guy would have had guilt over maiming a woman. Like Attolia had guilt over maiming Gen because he was so young
Willow: Se/he? ;-)
Avian: yes
Willow: she/he*
emerald: lol
Avian: :P
emerald: :D
Willow: That would make an interesting story, actually. A woman Thief might have quite a bit of freedom at first, before monarchs figured out how to deal with her.
emerald: Gen's mother wasn't actually a Queen's Thief but i think, she could have done it
Willow: She was Queen Thief, though.
Willow: Neat name. I stole it for a story.
Avian: yes, she did have the training from her father
emerald: was she. i thought Gen inherited the title striaght from his grandfather
emerald: sorry about the typos
Willow: No, not Queen's Thief. But Queen Thief. It was a nickname.
emerald: ah, i can't read today
emerald: that's it. sorry
Avian: she was well liked
Willow: You know, now I start to wonder about Eugenides's parents. They must have had an interesting marriage.
emerald: the basilisk stare of his father comes to mind
Avian: i think they made a good couple
Willow: Yeah, me too.
emerald: yes, they had lots of kids
Avian: his mother seemed so loving and easy going
Willow: But still... interesting.
Avian: yes
emerald: esp, her carefree dancing on roofs
Willow: I bet his father was a lot looser when she was alive.
emerald: yeah, have you read the disney adventures story? i think stenides is just great.
Avian: is he the one that became a watchmaker?
Willow: No! I never found the link.
Avian: or is that another one?
emerald: i bugged rowana and she put it up again
emerald: about a week or 2 ago.
emerald: maybe its gone now
emerald: yeah, stenides was the watchmaker
Willow: I'll check.
emerald: the pictures are so cute!!!
emerald: how did you start reading mwt?
Avian: i was only in like the third grade when i found the thief - and then some years later, i went to re-read it and found a sequal
Avian: after the first time i read it i never could find it for a while
Willow: I picked QoA off of the library shelf after having read the description several times. I definitely didn't expect it to be so mature-- I think it was in the kid's section, or something. It horrified me at first.
Avian: i think the library had lost it :)
emerald: i got given it randomly by my dad. i didn't like reading much until i read The Thief.
emerald: I love those books!!!!
emerald: I think they saved my english grades
Avian: it's the kind of book you just happen upon
emerald: you can't get mwt in the UK...its so annoying.
emerald: me and Rowana like to rant about it
emerald: but, i won't rant now. promise
Willow: :D
Willow: We don't mind. Or at least I don't.
emerald: :DDDDD i'm laughing with all 5 of my mouths
emerald: sorry
emerald: that's the other annoying thing i do
Avian: i don't mind either - i was just trying to see if i saved that story
emerald: all my mwt copies are being borrowed at the mo. i'm balancing the need to convert people with withdrawal symptons
Willow: Oh, so that's why you're going through withdrawal. I'm sorry...
emerald: thats ok...this is really cheering me up. none of my friends read mwt
emerald: :)))
Willow: Oh, the other thing I found interesting in the articles was how people disagreed over whether on not Eugenides' love for Attolia was realistic, or too sudden.
Willow: Some of them said it was hinted at in Book 1.
Avian: only three mouths? i thought you had five? :)
Willow: I thought you had 8!
Avian: i think it was pretty realistic
emerald: mouths: it changes depending on my mood.
Avian: especially with the flashback of watching her dance in the garden
emerald: love for Attolia: hmmm... it thought it was realistic
Willow: Yeah, with the set-up of how he'd watched her for years.
Avian: yeah
emerald: like Gen admitting that he thought it would end like a fireside story but realising it is much harder
Willow: Yeah
Avian: the difficulties make it seem very real
emerald: KoA really shows the facets of their relationship though...how they are different people towards different people
Willow: So then was Gen selfish to marry her for himself? Like Costis (or someone) said, "You didn't marry her to become king. You became king so you could marry her." Or is he possibly the only person who can stabilize the Attolian court?
Willow: Yeah, I liked that in KoA.
emerald: i love the way the reader knows Gen but Costis doesn't so we have to go through with "discovering" that side of gen only to find out that he can, and will, surprise us
Willow: Yeah. Dramatic irony.
emerald: beautiful
Willow: Hey, we're actually having an on-topic chat for once. Isn't it great?
Avian: i tis
emerald: sorry...
Willow: ... Oh look, a zucchini!
Avian: it is*
emerald: :DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD
Avian: hey, Checkers!
Willow: Checkers is a zucchini?
Willow: That's interesting...
emerald: *slowly backs away*
Willow: Oh never mind, I see what you meant.
Avian: i thought she just entered
emerald: only joking. i love random stuff
Avian: maybe not
Avian: lol
Willow: Hey, I've even got my ninja suit on. If it were dark it would be a perfect zucchini-dropping night!
emerald: wow, how organised
emerald: you could be a thief
emerald: or maybe not
Willow: Stealthy Ubiquities do everything. ;-)
Willow: Do you have a nickname yet, emerald?
emerald: naturally
emerald: you mean, a title in Rowana's court??
emerald: or a nickname...like...?
Willow: A title, yes.
Avian: in the court
emerald: ahh *comprehending*
emerald: nope...i am title-less
checkers from x.x.x.167 joined the chat 8 minutes ago
Willow: 'Cuz for some reason i keep thinking of you as Manymouths.
checkers: hi guys
Willow: Welcome, oh Great Zucchini!
emerald: i love it!!!
checkers: ???
emerald: *curtseys extravagantly* to the Great Zucchini
Willow: See backlog. ;-)
checkers: I'm madly trying to read the backlog to figure out what you are talking about
emerald: hehehe
checkers: Me? I've been called many things but never a vegetable
Willow: *chuckles at the chaos* Mmm, chaos...
Rowana from x.x.x.85 joined the chat 7 minutes ago
Avian: my fault, i confess
Willow: Hi!
Rowana: Hey guys. :)
checkers: hi Ro
emerald: hello, my nickname is manymouths!
Rowana: I'm late! Must read backlog.
Willow: Well actually it was my fault. *evil grin*
emerald: Willow decided
Rowana: ...
checkers: manymouths *will add to the list*
emerald: :DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD
emerald: sorry, its a habit of mine
Willow: We noticed. ;-)
Avian: an appropriate name
emerald: :D
checkers: I think you should be Genius Emerald
emerald: the credit goes to Willow
checkers: because you figured out how old Gen is
emerald: why am i a genius?
emerald: ahhh
emerald: i did, disn
Willow: Genius Manymouths?
emerald: ahhh
emerald: sorry, leant on my keyboard
checkers: ooh, i like that
Avian: that works
Willow: Or... Manyheads? Because then she has room for all that genius, and she has manymouths, too.
Rowana: Oh, manymouths! yeah, that fits. ;)
emerald: nooooooooo
Willow: No? OK.
emerald: I feel like i'm being inspected for a clothes fitting.
Avian: manyheads is a little strange
Rowana: You guys weer on topic! For all of five minutes. :D
emerald: i like manymouths
Willow: We're all a little strange. But I see your point.
checkers: yes, good discussion
emerald: we were on topic before you came, Rowana.
Willow: It's all checkers's fault! When she came in we started talking about zucchini.
emerald: :DDDD
Willow: Well... actually that part was my fault. But still.
checkers: yes! I'm not sure how I started all that...
emerald: i'm so sorry Checkers.
checkers: no problemo
Rowana: :D
emerald: :DDDDDDDDDDD hi Rowana
Avian: you realize that we will all call you a zucchini now :)
Rowana: Hey emerald. :)
emerald: howdy!
checkers: I can take it! :)
emerald: hehehe
Rowana: Who're we going to call a zucchini?
Rowana: I'm a little lost. :)
emerald: i vote: Checkers
checkers: I've been called worse
emerald: really???
checkers: sure
Avian: i say you get some green highlights in your hair
Avian: lol
Rowana: Wrathful for one. :)
checkers: well, maybe not worse than zucchini
checkers: that's pretty bad
Willow: *flees wrath* :P
emerald: emerald green highlights!
checkers: ???
Willow: Hey, what's wrong with zucchini?
Rowana: I'm still trying to figure out how we went from a character analysis to this. ;D
emerald: a little confused, i think
Rowana: Not that i'm complaining. :)
Avian: there is not a chance of getting back on topic
Rowana: I know. :)
Avian: :)
Rowana: How is everyone?
Willow: Yes there is. I was just about to ask Ro and Checkers what they thought of... I forgot. But it was either the gender switch or the hints about Attolia in the Thief.
emerald: a bit hyper...had too much tea!
emerald: i didn't think there were that many hints in The Thief
Willow: Someone mentioned one, I'm going to go look it up.
Rowana: The gender switch idea interested me. I'd been thinking about that in relation to another book.
emerald: i mean, the bit about returning to his sweetheart
checkers: as far as the romance goes, I didn't see any hints of it in Thief. I admit I was very surprised in QoA when Gen suddenly declared his love.
Willow: Which book?
emerald: yeah, which book?
Rowana: I agree - I didn't catch any hints in The Thief.
checkers: oh, yeah, Eddis
emerald: see, we're back on topic. thanks Willow!
Avian: i was wrong
Rowana: :) Go Willow.
Avian: which is good
emerald: :D
emerald: i mean :DDDDDDDDDDDDDd
checkers: what's that last mouth?
Willow: See, I can use my powers for constructive powers as well as chaos. It's just not as much fun. ;)
emerald: amen
Rowana: That was ruined by the d at the end. :D
emerald: sorry, the last mouth has mutated
Willow: Hmm. Granted, in Thief Gen does say he thinks Attolia's a fiend from the underworld.
Rowana: It would signify someone trying to lick their nose...
checkers: hahaha
Rowana: I wouldn't take that as a romantic hint though. :)
emerald: lets stay on topic
emerald: or is Gen trying to make himself see what everyone else sees: that she is a fiend when deep inside he is really very fascinated by her
Willow: He's been fascinated with her for years, hasn't he?
Rowana: Maybe.
checkers: was he going to watch her back in the Thief days, or did he start doing that after?
Rowana: According to QoA, he has.
Avian: i think it was before the thief
Rowana: There wasn't much time between The Thief and QoA so I'd assume before.
emerald: yes. his grandfather told him to go see what she was like for himself. if his grandfather was still alive he must have been quite young at the time
Avian: he might not have been watching for any reason but to spy though
Willow: Wait, logical reasoning: he watched her before she was old enough to be married, and Eugenides is engaged to Attolia at an age older than that at which Attolia was engaged to her first husband.
Willow: Dancing in the garden, I mean.
Rowana: Yes.
emerald: wow, logic!
Willow: :-D
Willow: Sorry, I'm encroaching on your prerogative, O Manymouths. ;-)
Avian: those ninja powers can be used constructivly
Avian: :)
checkers: you know, megan said she didn't get the idea to write a sequel to Thief until after it wan the Newbery Honor. Maybe she didn't have the idea of the romance until later.
emerald: and he said he was older than 6 when Attolia scoffed that calf love doesn't survive amputation
Rowana: That makes sense to me Checkers
Willow: Yeah, me too.
emerald: i didn't know that!!!
emerald: thank you
Rowana: She said the idea stemmed from a 'what if Gen got caught' scenario though, right?
checkers: yeah, she said she knew he'd keep going back and was bound to get caught
emerald: yeah, the whole war and everything. its mind-boggling
Willow: So, the Eddisians are darker colored than the Sounisians? I wonder if that refers to hair and eyes or skin tone?
Rowana: I wonder what would've happened if he'd been caught by Sounis instead.
emerald: esp, with the leaving of things beside her dressing table
checkers: back in chains, i suppose
Rowana: I assumed skin tone, Willow. But I'm not sure.
emerald: magus would try to get him to work for them
checkers: yes! i loved it that he left the earrings while she was sleeping
Willow: Not in chains for long. He's the master of foolhardy plans, remember?
Rowana: :)
emerald: the magus isn't a complete idiot though...is he?
emerald: but no one can beat Gen!
Willow: No.
Willow: Well Attolia did.
Rowana: He's incredibly patriotic. I still can't see how that fits in.
checkers: well, not for long :)
emerald: with the help of the Gods
Willow: I really loved that line in QoA with Eddis convincing Attolia that this isn't his revenge.
Willow: It makes you wonder about their relationship, that she thought being married to him would be that bad?
Rowana: Yes, because that was the crux of the problem by then. :) Everyone was waiting for that.
emerald: "he is not too young and you are not too old. You only feel old because you have been unhappy for so long"
Avian: his patriotism may help to make future alliances an such easier
Willow: Or did she think HE thought it would be that bad? in which case she knew she loved him, so why was she telling Eddis that his revenge would not be the revenge he thought it would be?
emerald: tough times for Sounis
Rowana: The Magus' patriotism I meant. But you have a point too. :)
Avian: same could go for the magus
checkers: i think Attolia thought he DIDN'T really love her
Rowana: true. :)
checkers: the marriage would be his revenge
emerald: i agree with checkers
Rowana: I agree with Checkers. Attolia thought he wanted the country, perhaps.
checkers: for losing his hand. he'd be king of her country
Rowana: Yes. :)
Willow: OK, that part makes sense.
emerald: to watch her country bled dry trough taxes and tribute to Eddis. she was patriotic too
Willow: But not the other part. If she loved him, being married to him wouldn't be his revenge, so why was she telling Eddis in order to try to call of the marriage, or whatever she was doing?
Willow: And if he didn't love her, then it would really be her revenge.
emerald: i understand
Willow: Or would it be his revenge to have her married to someone she loved who didn't love her? But did Attolia think he knew that?
emerald: maybe she was refusing to admit to herself she loved him
checkers: i think that's right, willow
Willow: She had earlier in the book, though.
Willow: Which part??
Willow: Lol.
emerald: when she outside his cell?
checkers: Or would it be his revenge to have her married to someone she loved who didn't love her?
emerald: and she cried for him?
Willow: Checkers-- ok.
Willow: Emerald-- I think it was first stated when she thinks Gen's been poisoned at Ephrata.
Rowana: Yes, I agree with that. What Checkers repeated I mean.
emerald: i think i agree with Checkers
emerald: ahh, now i get
Rowana: Are the overlapping conversations confusing anyone else? :)
checkers: i think that's why she hid her love for a long time. because she didn't believe him until the end of the book
checkers: yes! *whew*
Willow: And because she cut off his hand.
Rowana: Yes, I agree with that
Willow: Oh look! A zucchini!
emerald: yes. i'm confused. To Rowana: but earlier she listened outside his cell. mutual fascination, perhaps?
checkers: hahaha
emerald: :DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD
Willow: Mmmmmmmm, chaos...
Rowana: You're loving this, right?
Willow: I think she said she listened outside her cell because she'd taken all of his pain on herself.
Willow: :D
checkers: you go, willow :)
Willow: *rubs ahnds together*
Rowana: Typot!
Willow: Hands, too.
Willow: No, see, I have special structures called ahnds.
emerald: really?
checkers: you know, i suspected that
Rowana: All that bug talk
Rowana: You'd have to have ahnds.
Willow: They're sort of like... extra ears. They help me be stealthy.
Avian: a stealthy ubiqiuty requirement
checkers: you know, i suspected that
emerald: you're the one with the cockroach beating thief!
Willow: But getting back to the topic...
emerald: yes
Rowana: Oh no, it was being on topic that started this.
Rowana: I mean, yes...on topic...
Willow: no, it was me mentioning zucchini again...
emerald: does anyone here have a logical* definition of what "on topic" is?
Rowana: so we can all safely blame you. :)
Rowana: Anything relating to the books. :)
Willow: On topic: not involving zucchini, goats, underwear, bugs, or cream pies of justice.
emerald: ahhh...
emerald: i like Willow's definition!
Avian: off topic, but when did we mention that last one?
checkers: yes, i was wondering, too
emerald: cream pies of justice!!! you actually talk about that
Rowana: I think Willow added it for flair.
Willow: We didn't. It's from the Vor Game, one of the Miles books.
Willow: :-D
Rowana: *accusing stare*
emerald: :DDDDDDDDDDDDDD
checkers: really?
emerald: :P
Willow: What did I do this time??
Willow: Yes.
Rowana: I don't remember any pies of justice...
Rowana: Though I wouldn't be surprised. :)
checkers: me either
Avian: ahh, i haven't read those yet
Willow: At the end when he's having coffee with Gregor, and Miles says, "The cream pie of justice flies one way."
emerald: fascinating...i love this
Willow: When they're talking about Gregor being afraid of turning into Prince serg.
Willow: I thought Gregor's chardev was wonderful, IMHO.
Rowana: Checkers, by the way, I've started diplomatic Immunity
emerald: ???
Rowana: Just do edge even further away from the topic.
checkers: yay.
Rowana: to edge, even.
emerald: Three cheers for edging off topic!!!
emerald: hip hip...
emerald: hooray!
checkers: hooray
Rowana: I think i'm beginning to see why people have trouble with the transcript. :)
Avian: HOORAY
emerald: :DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD
checkers: do people have trouble with the transcript?
emerald: i thought they were ok
Rowana: Apparently. It's all the crossing conversations.
checkers: i think it's easier than actually being here. :)
Avian: i just always come read the backlog
Rowana: Quite possibly. :)
Avian: it's in color
Rowana: :D
emerald: I'm easily confused anyway
emerald: i like colour (english spelling, sorry)
Willow: So GETTING BACK TO THE TOPIC... :P
Rowana: Oh all right.
Willow: Heh heh. I'm hypocrite.
emerald: okey dokey
Willow: I'm a hypocrite.*
Rowana: :) What were talking about before the zucchini?
emerald: YOU ARE A HYPOCRITE!
Rowana: Which, incidentally, should really be called a courgette.
emerald: i can;t rememeber that far back
Willow: Gen's marriage being his revenge.
emerald: *smacks head* now i know what a zucchini is!!
Willow: And why Attolia thought that should be so if she knew she loved him.
Rowana: :D
emerald: sorry back on topic
checkers: i have a new question...
checkers: want to hear it?
Rowana: Yes.
Rowana: Please.
Willow: Yeeees?
emerald: go on
emerald: please
emerald: :DDDDDDDDDDD
Avian: before we are off topic again
emerald: ditto
checkers: ok. how desperate do you think Irene was to call Costis to her and ask what Gen does when he is locked in his room?
Rowana: Willow: I though we agreed it was having her marry someone she loved who didn't love her.
Rowana: I hadn't thought about that.
Willow: Yeah we did. But that's what we were talking about.
Willow: I don't know why she did that,
Rowana: She must have known Gen would find out about her asking Costis.
checkers: To admit to Costis that she's worried about Gen or thinking he's up to no good
Willow: Maybe she was trying to send a messagr to Gen?
emerald: checkers: ive only read KoA a few times so i haven't read it with such depth as the other too
Willow: But... they could just talk, couldn't they?
Willow: Or were they really spending their nights apart?
Rowana: Maybe it was so that we could see it.
checkers: It must have really worried her. she must have asked him but he wouldn't tell her
Rowana: We the readers I mean. :) I'm ruining all the cool speculation, but hey.
Avian: perhaps he wouldn't tell her when she asked him directly
emerald: Willow: not without court gossip and the trailing attendants which would be annoying.
Willow: Or maybe she didn't want him to know she was worried?
Willow: But he can get to her room unseen.
Avian: oops, you just said that :)
Rowana: But she must have known Gen would find out.
checkers: maybe because he didn't want her to know he was homesick
Rowana: Hadn't he admitted that to her though?
checkers: Ro, I htink that's a big part of it. So we could see it
emerald: or he was generally feeling insecure
Rowana: I think one of the links mentioned that - the difficulties of usnig a narator like that.
emerald: after all its mentioned in QoA: not one of the barons wondered if he could be a competent ruler
emerald: though he wanted Attolia to have her sovreighnty
emerald: i think i've contradicted myself
Rowana: :)
emerald: :DDDD
emerald: this is what happens when i try to keep up
checkers: it's extra hard to keep up today:)
emerald: sorry
Willow: So, maybe Irene wanted Gen to know that she was desperate, because he wouldn't tell her what was wrong.
Willow: Or maybe she just didn't believe whatever he said.
checkers: so many crossing conversations
Rowana: Or maybe she just wanted to confirm something.
checkers: hmm, willow, good point
emerald: i know.i'm having to read this aloud to make sense of it all
Rowana: so many people. :)
emerald: i was refering to the crossing conversations
emerald: not Willow's logic
checkers: maybe she was testing Costis to see if he'd tell
Willow: Oh, slight my logic. :P
Rowana: :D
checkers: hahaha
emerald: :DDDDDDD
Willow: Which would involve Gen's cooperation, which meant they were talking.
checkers: that's only 7 mouths
Rowana: I'm still not sure why Susa checked the same thing.
emerald: I'm trying to cut down
checkers: there are several times in the book when Irene asked Gen something and he wouldn't answer
Rowana: For completely different reasons than Irene's, I;m sure.
Rowana: That's a good point Checkers.
checkers: Yeah, I'm not clear on that either, Ro
Avian: he probably wanted to find something he could use against Gen
emerald: i;m also confused. i;m texting my friend to say i want my KoA copy back!!!
Rowana: :)
checkers: true, Avian
emerald: but what???
Rowana: What was Susa's reaction when Costis told him what Gen was doing?
Avian: i don't think he suspected anything in particular
Rowana: I can't remember. :)
emerald: me neither!!!
Avian: he gave him the coin
emerald: Rowana...are your books still unreachable?
Rowana: They're upstairs. And i'm too lazy. :P
checkers: well, Costis said it seemed like Susa thought what Costis told him was important
checkers: but Costis didn't know why
emerald: maybe the coin was also to put Costis off balance and to keep him quiet
Willow: Mine are across the room. But I'm lazy. :P
Rowana: I don't think Susa was that interested in Costis, just in the news.
Willow: Wait, what are we looking up again?
Rowana: Susa's reaction to Costis's news. :)
emerald: susa's reaction to...
Rowana: I think...
Willow: Hmm. Just reread it.
emerald: tell me tell me tell me
Willow: I think Susa's reaction-- hsi eyebrows went up-- might be a reaction that he knows Costis is playing games with him.
Willow: By not saying what he wants.
emerald: or not knowing what he is asking
Rowana: Perhaps some of this will be made clearer in the next book
Willow: Or else it's because Costis has said the king doesn't actually do anything, just sits. Ergo, he can't be plotting.
checkers: ah, true
Willow: Or so Susa thinks. Poor fool.
Willow: Gen plots in his dreams.
Rowana: I still got the impression that the ponit of this book was partly to set up a lot of themes and scenarios for the next one.
checkers: Ssssssussssssa
Rowana: :D
checkers: remember in QoA when Gen said Susa slithers up and talks to me sometimes?
Rowana: Yes. :)
checkers: like a sssssssnake
emerald: hissssssssssssssssss
Rowana: Poor Gen. The description of the court at the end of QoA made them sound awful.
emerald: he likes to complain.
emerald: then again, they were awful
Rowana: :)
Rowana: Another thing - the dancing scene in KoA
Rowana: I can't remember if we've discussed this.
emerald: I have to go now...its been fun chatting. will read the transcript for understanding
Rowana: I got the impression that things were being revealed which were going over my head.
checkers: bye emerald!
Willow: Dancing scene?
Willow: Bye!
emerald: bye everyone!!!
Rowana: Bye Emerald. :)
Willow: With Heiro?
Avian: byee
checkers: like what Ro?
emerald from x.x.x.103 left the chat
Rowana: The court dance. he pulls out her hairpins.
checkers: yes
Rowana: Just Phresine's comment about things being revealed for those with eyes to see
Rowana: I feel like I missed something.
checkers: i thought two things about that
Willow: Oh, in QoA?
Willow: Or KoA?
Rowana: KoA. :)
Willow: Right.
checkers: first, they thought he couldn't do the dance with one hand. but he could do it, and pull out all her hairpins at the same time
checkers: and second, i think it showed a bit about their relationship. that they had "something going on"
Rowana: Good points.
Avian: those are the same things i got from that
Rowana: I think you're right about that.
checkers: he was teasing her a little
Willow: Something going on. Lol.
checkers: with the hairpins
Rowana: :) And she went with it.
Willow: Something going on with the hairpins?
Willow: Now that's interesting...
Avian: she wasn't entirely happy that it was in front of the entire court though
checkers: :)
checkers: true
checkers: i gotta go, too, nice talking to you!
Avian: bye
Rowana: Bye Checkers. :)
Willow: Bye O Great Zucchini!
checkers: :) bye!
checkers from x.x.x.167 left the chat
Rowana: Courgette dammit. :)
Rowana: :D
Avian: :)
Willow: Zucchini! :P
Rowana: *is too mature to continue this*
Rowana: *mutters 'Courgette'*
Avian: i have to go as well
Avian: nice talking
Avian: bye
Willow: Bye!
Rowana: Bye Avian. :)
Avian from x.x.x.71 left the chat
Rowana: Wow, quite a few people turned up.
Willow: Y'know, I do think it was a knife and not Gen's hook that he threatened the baron with.
Rowana: Any reason?
Willow: Because a hook would be curved, and a knife blade mostly straight, and surely the baron would notice the difference.
Rowana: True. And Gen was trying to keep his hook as inconspicuous as possible.
Rowana: How many knives do you think Gen has secreted away
Willow: Oh lots.
Rowana: And I wonder if he still keeps hold of his thieving tools.
Willow: Hey, do you think that was Gen's knife or Irene's knife under Irene's pillow?

ahh, Missed the chat again - I was too busy shopping, I'll have to try again in two weeks :)

On quickly love - When I read the thief the first time I thought that Gen loved Attolis, and she loved him - something about the whole prison cell coversation, I think I even got the feeling Eddis knew but don't recall why - my copy is too far away to check - and was so pissed off that there wasn't a sequel to the book

once move-in here at college is done I'll introduce myself, I swear.

the line in "The Thief" that always hinted to me was when she nods to him in acceptance of a point scored ("You are more beautiful...but she is more kind") and he was "pleased with myself, in a bitter sort of way." they TOTALLY had something going on. that's probably what you were thinking of.

is it sad that I did that completely from memory?

anyway, "You've been watching me for years?" "Yes."

*is so totally excited people discuss this book in detail* I'm so coming to the next chat.

oh, wait, I remember, he smiled, pleased with himself in a bitter sort of way.

...yeah, okay, I memorized it after he said he loved her in QoA, because it was the only real foreshadowing in Thief.

...aw, crap, we're having smores now. I love smores. must go!

Hello, this is the basic plotline of Rowana, Willow, and Emerald's dancing bear fanfic (if you can call it that). Rowana, Willow, anyone else - feel free to add suggestions. We still need to work in the Great Underwear Theory, zucchinis, and something about Ornon's goats. It's random, like the chat, so I added it on here.

Helen and the Magus rescued a dancing bear from a circus. It is Ornon’s idea to give Gen the bear. Gen sends Costis on a mission to bring the bear from Eddis to Attolia. While in Eddis he meets Agape. He dislikes the bear but Agape is quite fond of it and they bond on the journey to Attolia. Costis discovers he loves Agape and decides the bear is a good thing. Without the bear, he would not have met Agape.

Irene is amused when she finds out but chooses not to comment on why a dancing bear is more at home in Attolia than Eddis which has a better climate for bears (and also fir trees and mountains.) Irene feels sorry for the bear because it reminds her of Gen and lets it stay. It lies on the floor in front of her throne, feeling a bit overwhelmed by his new surroundings. Suddenly, a ubiquitous assassin jumps out – it’s Nahuseresh. The bear jumps up and kills Nahuseresh with one swipe of his almighty paw. Irene is very impressed. It turns out Nahuseresh was the one who sold the bear to the circus in the first place.

Gen decides to make the bear his heir. (Love that rhyme.) The whole court is in an uproar. People say snide comments about that being the only way Gen could get an heir. Irene is currently pregnant but Gen chooses to pass over the kid in order to protect it from assassination attempts. The ploy (Willow's brilliant idea) works. The court is in chaos.

Meanwhile, the heir-bear is getting lonely and the royal couple decide to find him a lady-bear so he can get married. They send Costis. Costis searches far and wide for a lady-bear, but alas, he cannot find one. Then somewhere close to Sounis-Eddis border, near a small Sounisian village, he meets a young man who sells goat-wool underwear for a living. Costis remembers that Agape wanted some cashmere underwear so he goes to buy some. He mentions in passing he’s looking for a lady-bear. His cover story is that he’s working for a circus. The young man looks at Costis suspiciously. He tells Costis there aren’t any bears on these parts.

That night when Costis is camped out under the stars, he hears a noise. He wakes up, to find the young cashmere-seller with a sword about half a foot away from his face. Grabbing his sword, Costis knocks the young man over and disarms him. Costis demands to know who he is and what the hell he’s trying to do. The young man accuses Costis of cruelty to bears. Costis decides to tell him the truth when he finds out the young man knows where he can meet some bears. The young man is still suspicious but when he hears Gen’s name, decides to help Costis as long as Costis brings heir-bear with him so he can make friends himself.

They head off back through Eddis to Attolia. Costis’s disguise as a messenger gets them through easily. They stop by at the Eddisian Palace to give some official messages to Helen. Costis has unofficial messages from Agape to her family but they’re not speaking to her for marrying a “common soldier”. Costis is hated by Agape’s family; it isn’t a pleasant visit. However, Helen intervenes after meeting the young underwear-seller…

…who turns out to be Sophos! Sophos was in hiding. He made friends with some bears after saving one of their cubs from being captured by the circus. The Magus is delighted to see Sophos alive. He buys some goat-wool underwear to celebrate.

Meanwhile, a lady-bear has followed Costis and Sophos all the way into Eddis. They take her to meet heir-bear. And it’s love at first sight.

By the way, the Dancing Bear doesn't actually inherit in the end. It was just a ploy.

I didn't mean that Gen would actually succeed in making the bear his heir. I just meant that the threat of possibly having a bear-heir would make the Attolians more likely to accept and less likely to assassinate the kid.

Hmm, maybe this could be a sequel to the doomfic with the Great Underwear Theory? Which we haven't written yet, either.

Hmm... so, Helen and Sophos? :-)

this is one of the crackiest crack crack crack fics I've read in a very, very long time. (And that includes reading a summary of how the entire first season of Avatar would be different had Zuko been shirtless in every episode.)

I love it to pieces.

So...(the persistent question) is it actually going to be written out? and how?

Yes. It will. By physical force, if necessary!

... Sorry. Quoting from 1776, an awesome musical. But yes, I really hope it does. Next time I have free time I'm going to drink lots of sugary stuff, sit down in front of the keyboard, and see what happens.

By the way, I didn't notice the significance of your name until you signed off this morning. I'm just that dense.

Sop knows how to use a sword now? Does that mean that before QoA, on the nights Gen wasn't moonlighting in Atolis room he was in Sounis teaching him how to use a sword.

Or did the she-bear teach him?
From: [identity profile] checkers65477.livejournal.com
In Thief, Gen said Sophos had the makings of a great sword fighter, with training.

Why in hell would a bear wear underwear?

You guys are officially nuts. :)

A community of reprobates! Rowana: the bear does dance but he didn't like dancing in the circus so maybe Attolia could give him a break. Also she could teach him Attolian dances.

I'm thinking Sophos knows some basics about how to use a sword, but Costis is better and Gen is better than both of them. Good idea about the lessons, whoever suggested that (sorry, can't remember). It would give Sophos a reason to stay in Attolia for a bit without being chased by Sounisian hating Attolians.

I have no idea why a bear would wear underwear - cashmere underwear - even. This was *NOT* my idea, but belongs to fellow reprobates, Willow and Rowana.

Checkers - deep down, you are one of us! You can't escape now! *mwahahaha* (evil laugh)

I can't believe I've got involved with this...

On a completely and totally unrelated note, I was post-hopping and ended up somewhere looking at something on this comm and SOMEONE SAID JAMES MARSTERS WAS FRICKIN 40 so of course I had to imdb that and lo and behold he was born in FRICKIN 1962.

I have been...disillusioned. I mean, there's nothing wrong with older guys and all, but he was so unbelievably sexy as Spike and...and...*weeps*

(of course, I nearly had a heart attack when I heard an interview with Nick Brendon and he said something along the lines of "I started acting when I was 25"...gah...wait, I just imdb'd him and he's done voices on...JAKE LONG??? WHY DOES EVERYTHING HAPPEN ON THAT SHOW??????)

...
.

okay, I'll stop spamming now.

...That is a fantastically evil icon you have right there.

well, yeah...I mean, I seem to recall the friend who hooked me on Buffy telling me this, but I also remember quickly forgetting. But I mean, come on. Are there any other men--I mean ANY other men--who look *that* good at forty? (I mean, yes, Johnny Depp is fantastically hot, but I don't think he's quite as ripped as Marsters was...and he does look older, anyway. I watched an interview that took place between the sixth and seventh seasons and I wouldn't have put Marsters over 35, if that old. ...gaaaaaaaaaaaaah.)

there was roasted zucchini (courgette? is that a British thing?) in the dining hall yesterday...it was delicious. ^_^
