let's play a guessing game, everyone! (aka latin's getting on my nerves -- pronouns are insufferable -- so i'm finding something (semi)-useful to do with my latin textbook)

no latin students allowed.
that would be cheating, obviously. :)
and no google. obviously i can't check that you didn't use it, but that just takes the fun out of it, so. ON WITH THE SHOW.

is my excessive enthusiasm annoying you yet?
um, these phrases all have something to do with the books and/or the characters, and that's the only hint i shall give, because psssshaw latin and english are close enough anyways. it'll be fun. :) and winners will get an icon or a banner or something, to be specified later (and made after my chem test next monday, because studying will get me into princeton and then i won't die on the streets, homeless, because i am a failure, right? :D).

1. experientia docet stultos - think the attolia court in koa
2. multum in parvo -think gen and irene's love
3. formosa facies muta commendatio est - something that reminds me of irene (think nahueresh)
4. palma non sine pulvere - and how. think of "stealing peace." think also of "she is treasure beyond any price" (i don't have the book with me at the moment)
5. accipere quam facere iniuriam praestat - ouch, that stings, gen. this one's a toughie, so - it's from cicero, and a reference to the hand choppy offy bit of their history.
6. dum spiro, spero - the annotation at the bottom is scarily close to a line in the book. a line we often quote. think mountains, qoa, and proposals. [[livejournal.com profile] drashizu , [livejournal.com profile] ilonaotus ]
7. equo ne credite - okay, so it's referencing something else entirely, but it fits gen to a "t" in regards to...(obviousness. come on. look at the words). [[livejournal.com profile] kaeyko ]
8. non omne quod nitet aurum est - tolkien. helen! and sometimes gen. (if no one gets this, i will be shocked.) [[livejournal.com profile] drashizu ]
9. revocated animos, maestumque timorem mittite - what gen should do a few months after the handy choppy offy bit.
and finally!
10. possunt quia posse videntur - gengengengen gen x 10000. [[livejournal.com profile] openedlocket ]

and there we have it. ballpark translations are fine, there's one icon (banner, i guess, if you want one or the other) per question, so you don't have to get all of them correct.
um, sorry for the gen & irene overkill. :( i have a fondness for the two and so, it seems, does my textbook. i was thinking of putting dulce et decorum est pro patria mori, but it's pretty famous and pretty much applies to the eddisian soldiers as well as the attolians. and teleus. and relius. and gen. but not nahuseresh.

pssst, question. what should i tag this? :)
have...fun?
i'm going to post this before i convince myself this is a horrible idea.

EDIT: if you've got something right (see up top) and were the first to get it correct, message me. :) if you want my crappily made icons (just kidding. they're okay. not like, [livejournal.com profile] ohfreckle , but not horrendous).

1. experience teaches fools.
2. much in little.
3. a pleasing countenance is a silent recommendation.
4. no prize without a struggle (lit. "no palm without dust," which refers to the palm branch given to winners of chariot races)
5. it is better to suffer a wrong than to do one.
6. where there's life, there's hope (also while i breathe, i hope, but the first is better for our game because it's closer to the book :D)
7. do not trust the horse.
8. all is not gold that glitters (all that is gold does not glitter is a reference to lotr if you didn't catch that, and you better have ;D)
9. recall your courage and banish gloomy fear
10. they can because they think they can.

Uhhh I think number 10 is "I can do anything I want?" random guess is random.

Hm...wow, thanks for giving this one :)) I'm quite stumped as to what it actually means though...

I can do whatever I wish?

I am able to do whatever I please?

I am able to do it because I believe?

Ohhhhh //face palms at self

When you said that the first time, I thought it was another clue...

It does sound very Gen.

:D This is fun! Way to use a Latin textbook for the forces of fangirling ;)

Um, 8 has the word for "aurum" in it. So... not all that glitters is gold? (Only quote I can think of for that.)

This turned out to be harder for someone who knows *no* Latin than I thought it would be. Most of the meanings of Latin roots in English have shifted over the years from what they originally meant, so even when I recognize I root, I can't tell what it's supposed to mean. But it's a fun game nevertheless!

I'm really, really curious about 6, but I can't figure it out.

Oh golly. And I thought this would be easy...
Let's see:
Umm...
1. "Experienced servants are careful?" 8P (I'm reaching here) See, docet makes me think of docent.
3. Well, facies has to do with war/hostilities. I think Muta=muted, as in suppressed or quiet? Ugh, I should know formosa, it sounds familiar...
7. "Horses are no good" ? ?
9. Ooh, I can almost understand this one! Something like: "Let go of hate" - and then I lose it. Oh well. : D

A recently new fan delurks...

7. "Don't trust/credit... the horse" ? An Odysseus reference maybe?

Whooh, I'll try to give some of these a go. My native tongue is not based on latin so I'm basing these off of what I know of English and French (the latter being not much) and one singe Latin lesson I've once had. XD

1. All that comes to mind with this is "opportunity makes the thief" but it doesn't really fit with the Attolian court. :D Experientia could also be experience, but that's a far as I can go with this.

2. "multiplying while dogs with parvo all around"? No? Not even close?

3. "appearances can deceive"?

4. pulveri means powder in my language, I can't get past that when I think of this. XD All I get is "Don't sniff powder from your palm".

5. accipere = acceptance? predict? iniuriam = injury? "Accept like facing the presented injury". Yup, that must be it. :D

6. dum= ??, spiro = spirit? but no, it looks more of a verb since it ends with o. Breath? I breath? then spero is also a verb since it ends with o. something I do. ??? I breath, I ???. Okay, judging from that dum could be while or as long as. "While I breath, I... hope?" At least that would fit the books.

7. equo = equal? ne = no or some other negation? credite = give credit? Though, equo is pretty close to equine so equo could possibly be a horse or a mule maybe? "Horse gets no credit?" XD

8. non = not, omne = all? (thinking omnipotent) quod = that (based on my limited French studies), nitet = I have no idea, but judging from the context I'd go with "glitter", aurum = gold, est = is. "Not all that glitters is gold?" :D

9. I have no idea whatsoever about this one.

10. "Possum does as Possum pleases." I cannot be persuaded to believe this means anything else. :P

Oh! Oh! "Where there's life, there's hope"? For #6.

I don't know if I should really get this one, though, since I used ilonaotus's idea to come up with mine.

I was a Latin student, but I know none of these. And I can hardly think of what any of the words mean. ^^;

Just reinforces the desire I've been feeling lately to pull Wheelock's Latin out from storage and go through it again. I've got nothing better to do, at the moment, being unemployed.

I could do the Tolkien one, but I see I've been beat to it!

Yeah, I took 2 years in high school and I'm lost also, except on "all that glitters is not gold". Ah well.

*clings to my fellow Latin truant*

Of course, mine is worse, 'cause my Latin classes were only two years ago. At least you have a few (and, of course, I mean a very very very, teeny tiny, miniscule, parvum) more years as an excuse. XP

Dammit I just finished a Latin course and still can't decipher any of theses - missed the boat! Ah well...

1Let's see:
#3, stealing from ladyadeone, Your quiet strength in war is to be commended?
#4, I thought was something with "only one hand", but Idk.
#6, I think Ilonaotus is right, "While I breathe, I hope."
#7, "Horses suck."
#9, Hmmm,"Your body has healed, now go get rid of your fear."
#10, Totally, "Possum does as Possum pleases." Ilonaotus is right on this one.
#2, Uh. "Many-layered" kinda, sorta, in a way. For some reason, I'm thinking parvovirus is an envelope virus, and I think that's why it's called parvovirus; I think that's a root for that. Idk, I now have a hoarder brain. All the information has fallen off the little hooks and is piling up on the floor so I could be waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay off here.
#5, "The velvet was soft, but the embroidery scratched." Aaaahahahaha!
#1, "Court experience is stultifying; always bring a dancing bear."

Well, that's why I put in credit where I ripped off someone else if it wasn't already obvious. I figured most of the time it was obvious though. And don't worry, I'm not in it for the banner or whatever, since I won't know how to use it since I'm a tech-idiot. I'm in it strictly for the glory laughs.

Oooops, I see you already gave me #9, so if someone else wants that icon, they can have it I guess?
*shrugs helplessly*
I'm kinda clueless about these things. Kindigo made me one icon and helped me make one icon and Te Aroha made me my currently-in-use-in-memory-of-the-original-Attolian-hunting-hound-Tie.

Well, I am almost 100% sure I know number 6, but since I don't have an account and therefore can't use icons, I'll let someone else get this one.... fun game :)
