Tangled!

Hey everyone! I've been absent here for a long time...(still digesting CoA), but after watching Disney's "Tangled" today, I had to come back and gush to people who'd understand.

I actually heard about this Rapunzel-remake movie here first, because someone mentioned it was a movie with a dashing thief, much like our own Eugenides. I missed it in theaters, but I've been DYING to watch it on DVD to see how thief Flynn Rider measured up to thief Gen.

(Let me break here and apologize if I'm just repeating a whole conversation that you guys may have had in my absence. If so, feel free to palm-->forehead and move on.)

Well, obviously, Flynn is totally adorable and funny and arrogant and dashing and he spends a lot of time running from people who are after him. Sounds familiar, yes? I mean, I was in love with him as it is. He even looked a lot like how I imagine Gen (minus the beard thing).

*sigh*

Anyway, the name "Flynn" is clearly a tribute to Errol Flynn, who played Robin Hood...another exemplary thief. I was content with that.

BUT THEN!!

During a touching scene around a campfire, Flynn reveals to Rapunzel that his real name is EUGENE! *screams*

I nearly peed in my pants! I mean, seriously, how can THAT be a coincidence?! Eugene, Eugenides...Come on!

Tell me I'm not the only one of us that freaked out when they watched that movie? I generally, don't get all girl screamy, but THAT made me wave my hands and squeal and everything!

All that IMDb reveals on the matter was that the hero's name was originally going to be Bastion. Why the change? Was Disney tipped off to OUR thief's name?

Ok, discuss.

I freaked out when I saw the commercial.

I think it was fate, destiny, whatever you call it, that brought this little present to us. I mean (SPOILER ALERT), a thief sneaking around palaces, stealing expensive accessories? HE AND RAPUNZEL EVEN GET IN A BOAT! A boat! He even hates this HORSE.

I'm sorry. This is getting me all excited, being a big fan of both Tangled and the Queen's Thief Series.

Ahem. I believe I mentioned after I saw Tangled that there was a story about MWT touring a movie studio a while back. Maybe the movie being made was Tangled? And they were so enchanted and charmed by "our" author that they made the name change as a tribute to her. (I don't think I was as coherent the first time I said it, though.)
That's my (made up) story and I'm stickin' to it. ;P

I flipped too. At some point I had a crossover in my head between Tangled, King's Thief and Assassin's Creed.

I do love that fact, even if it wasn't on purpose, it's awesome on how strangely similar Eugene and Gen are.

With that said, shall I take bets to see who writes the first Tangled and Queen Thief crossover? XD Admit it, you want Eugene and Gen to compete on who is the best thief.

We have discussed this at least twice (see here (http://community.livejournal.com/sounis/387437.html) and here (http://community.livejournal.com/sounis/427640.html)). I point this out not because I'm going "palm-->forehead", but because if you haven't seen the latter link in particular, you need to. I love how many similarities people have come up with.

Someone needs to make a crossover fic. Seriously.

I just re-watched this last night with some friends (one of whom loves The Thief, but I haven't figured out if she's read the others yet.) I think I was probably giggling the most because I was seeing references all over the place. I listed a bunch of them in one of the previous posts. I have two more to add, though. In the Snuggly Duckling, there is a goat. He and Flynn makes eyes at each other. Also, in the tower, Flynn raises one eyebrow, much like Gen.

I totally understand about the excitement. Before I saw the movie I knew there were some similarities, but the amount of them made me want to squee. I love this movie!

And, I hate to burst the community's bubble, but Eugene's name does not come from the Queen's Thief books.

I have a good friend who worked on Tangled and asked her.

"To my knowledge it's just a really dorky name that fits in with late 18th century German folklore. It has no significance at least that was never mentioned."

So, carry on with fanficcing. I do think it'd be a good cross-over, but Eugene's name isn't based on Gen.

Ah, I thought it was simply a coincidence. And I must protest, Eugene is so totally not a dorky name! It's an awesome name!

I second this. I bought the artbook for the film (which was worth the evil amount of money), and I would have loved to have been a part of such an amazing movie!

I'd like to think that whoever first suggested the name might have been looking under those parameters, seen it on a list, and thought, "Just like Eugenides! But I can't tell anyone that I like to read! Must keep it a secret!"
