I just wanted to take this opportunity to share. As I said in the chat today, my roommate and I had this really clever idea where she would bring her paperbacks of The Thief and QoA and I would bring my KoA. We only lasted two weeks before I had to send for my hardcovers because I was in withdrawal and we needed multiple copies to live.

I am of course immensely fond of my hardcovers because I have known them well since eighth grade (so for, like, 6.5 years). However, looking off the side of my bed and seeing The Thief, I realize...

HOW INCREDIBLY UGLY THE COVER IS.

It wasn't even until last year, with the help of my Eddisian co-conspirator, that I figured out what the cover was OF. For years, I thought it was a really really ugly man. It didn't even occur to me that it might be Hephestia. I think that's not my fault, because you know what Great Goddesses aren't supposed to be?

I will tell you.

They are not supposed to be horrifically, mind-fryingly ugly. They are not supposed to be SO ugly that it takes three people to figure out they are a woman. They are not to be SO ugly that you're GLAD a hand-shadow is covering part of their face. It is NOT PROPER GODDESS BEHAVIOUR.

Well. At least it's a hardcover.

That's...supposed to be Hephestia? O_o Oh. Okay. ...Wow.

By the way, this post made me laugh, and is still making me laugh, a lot. So thanks. XD

LOL! I only have the trade paperback, and I quite like the cover. Now I have to go on line and look for your ugly goddess cover so I can make fun, too.

holeh crap. I always thought that was supposed to be the King of Sounis. @___@

I thought that was the King of Sounis too. Now that you mentioned it, I can tell by the ruby headband that it's the Great Goddess.

I thought that was the Magus for the longest time. Even knowing who it is now, it's permanently altered what I picture him as. I wonder what the artist's thoughts were, why they chose that.

*chokes* do you mean the greyish hair person one? i always thought it was the Magus too!!! it so does not look like a female. i thought goddesses were supposed to look, well, like a goddess.

I'll never, NEVER, be able to forget your riding crop comment. Oh, the painful images. *scrubs at brain*

Magus

Jeez. What an elephant you are. *scrubs all memory of indiscreet comment from Ro's brain*

Ok, what about him (http://www.born-today.com/Today/pix/branagh_kenneth.jpg) as the Magus? Think more Hamlet and less Gilderoy Lockhart. Snide, conceited, supercilious, no?

That's a WOMAN! Omg...how ugly! Poor Hephestia. I have the paperbacks so I didn't realise! The David Wyatt covers so rule.

I have the David Wyatt covers too, so I had to check online, and you really are right. The cover is awful.

*cleans snorted diet Coke from keyboard*

I've been trying to hand-sell the book to patrons -- I always have to tell them DISREGARD THE COVER, just read the book.

Oh, and by the way...

Attolia deliberately dresses like Hephestia, right? In order to evoke her image of power. Which makes it all the more meaningful that the "magic words" (in the ancient language; uttered by Gen in prison and later by Teleus at Gen's prompting) are an invocation to Hephestia. (The Great Goddess isn't just powerful; she's compassionate as well...)

By which I meant to say...

From: [identity profile] nj-librarian.livejournal.com
the "magic words" can also be interpreted as a kind of reminder that if you're going to take on the rold of the Goddess, you better take on the WHOLE role, not just part...

did that make more sense?

Wow, I never even thought of that

that makes the whole quote thing sooooo much better, as I never really understood it before

I loved it when Teleus said the invocation and the wind rushed through the room, blowing out the candles, as if the Great Goddess was reacting to the invocation for her mercy and judgement.

The new covers in the same style as KoA are so beautiful and elegant and nice. Just me being positive. Have a nice day!

emerald :))))))

Now, I have to disagree with all of you. While I like the new covers best, I also always liked this cover. It looks like an ancient Roman statue, yo! Of a goddess. The headband doesn't do much for me, but I think I like this cover better than the paperback one with Gen near the statue about to snatch the stone. I don't much care for the illustration of Gen, I suppose.

If nothing else, the shadow of the hand is awesome. I wonder if MWT had any idea at that time that Gen was going to lose that hand soon.

Date: 10/1/06 07:53 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] nj-librarian.livejournal.com
Actually, if you look carefully, you'll see that the shadow is of the hand he got to KEEP -- the left.

Date: 10/1/06 07:55 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] nj-librarian.livejournal.com
Also, the stones in the headband don't look at all like rubies.
They look like M&Ms.

And the feathered hair is rather 1970s. (Evidently they have blowdryers in the temple under the river.)

There's a shadow of a hand? o.O This is my preferred cover too (I HATE the paperback I own), but I never looked at it all that much--unlike QoA, where I used to just sit and stare at the hand, memorizing it.

I think I knew it was Hephestia. Actually, I know I knew it was Hephestia, because when I first read this post, I couldn't figure out what the problem was. :-b I like it because...it looked tranquil to me. Just...there's a statue. Completely misleading as to what was contained inside.

The paperback Gen looks, to me, like a badly drawn Sirius Black.

...I cannot BELIEVE I never saw that hand...*facepalm*

From: [identity profile] peggy-2.livejournal.com
I never noticed the hand before either. I don't think the statue is all that ugly. I like the cover better than the "Gift as a Yo Yo" one. Interesting he would be reaching with his left hand to take the Gift.

*snickers*

on the other hand

hee hee. Funny.

XD It actually took me a while to figure out what you were talking about because the cover my library has is the paperback one with Eugenides turning around with that "fhqwhgads?" (pronounced "fuh-ho-whuh-gads" XD) look on his face.

I didn't know that was supposed to be Hephestia...at all. I think I thought it was just some random statue of a random god. It..IS pretty...ungoddess looking. XD I actually prefer the original paperback cover out of all of them, but I think it's because it's the only cover I've ever gotten to see IRL that shows *all* of Gen's face (I was going to say it was the only cover that has Gen on it, but then I realized that was a big fat lie. XD)

Although, my favorite cover of all of them is the KOA cover....with the hardcover QOA cover as a close second (the 'floating hand' one--it was the cover that intrigued me enough to read the book in the first place, so I have to give it kudos)
From: [identity profile] jade-sabre-301.livejournal.com
Which one is the Wyatt QoA?

I have to agree on the covers--the floating hand QoA is the one that got me to read the book...I love that one. And the new KoA is simply gorgeous.

From: [identity profile] ceecee44.livejournal.com
The KOA is my favorite cover as well, just because it seems to represent the whole book with just that one scene.
