When I first started here, I found a list deep in the archives of book recommendations for Thief lovers. Someone, I forget who, suggested The Girl of Fire and Thorns by Rae Carson.

To whoever you are, THANK YOU!! What a great book! (I mean, c'mon, MWT blurbed it!)

Since the point of this forum is strictly Gen-based, I won't waste time waxing poetic on this great book, but I DID want to mention how I kept distracting myself while reading. I kept comparing the heroine Elisa to Gen.

She's no Gen, that's for sure, but I think Gen would've liked her. She wants to do what's right, and because of her studies her mind is a bit Machiavellian. Though the politics of court aren't her things, the politics of war certainly are. Actually, if anything, she reminded me of Sophos - not comfortable with power, not the smoothest, but a good heart and able to grow into the position of authority.

Have any of you read Fire and Thorns? Did you think of Gen at all while reading? Are there other books you've read recently (or not so recently) where you found yourself comparing the protagonist to our Gen?

(Oh yeah, and if you haven't read Fire and Thorns and are interested, here's my review.)

UPDATE: Oh my gosh, you guys. The False Prince by Jennifer Nielsen - if you haven't read it, go now. Seriously, go. The main character is like a teeny Gen (though less cool, because who can be as cool as Gen?) There's also a Pol-type character, and THREE Useless characters (two of the three have vaguely Ambiades-like leanings).

I read this book a while ago, and while I didn't see it while reading, I can see your point about Sophos. She was always unsure of herself, and made to feel that she had no talents/abilities. And then you get her captured and through hard work she learns to use all of the abilities she never knew she had.

If you're looking for other Gen-type characters, try the Legend of Eli Monpress series by Rachel Aaron. Eli is a flashy thief, always getting into bigger and bigger capers, which always turn into saving the world. You can see the book trailers I made for the first three books here (http://1221bookworm.livejournal.com/1974.html). Gen could mop the floor with Eli in terms of skill, but there is also a great supporting cast, and Eli could probably hold his own in a "who's the bigger whiner" contest!! :)

For a more Sophos-y character, always debating the difficult decisions, along with plenty of action, try the Healing Wars by Janice Hardy. They're aimed at a slightly younger audience (following the book cover) but I think that older audiences would enjoy it too. The main character is trying to protect her family, but in the process, saves the whole world. But she always wonders if she is on the right track. Lovable characters abound, and while difficult decisions are debated, there is plenty of action to keep it moving. Here's (http://1221bookworm.livejournal.com/3146.html) a link to the trailer of the first book.

And, if you're not tired of me yet, you could try the Farsala Trilogy by Hilari Bell. While there is no one Gen/Sophos-y character, the whole series is about learning to use the strengths you never knew you had. There are no completely good guys or completely bad guys. Everyone has made their mistakes, and everyone has had their moment of shining glory. Also, this book is intertwined with the true Persian myth of Sorahb, (along with some creative license - you'll know where one stops and the other starts) and offers a peek into how legends are created. My only warning would be - the first book is a teensy bit draggy with all the set-up. PLEASE do not give up on it. Even if you have to drag yourself to read the second book. It gets better, I promise!! :) Here (http://farsala.livejournal.com/1451.html) are some trailers to wet your appetite.

Sorry if this was more than you were looking for! Can't wait to see what other books have Gen like characters!! :)

Nothing coherent to add (you really don't want to read my fangirling about these three series!) but I love all three of them. Alot. And it makes me really happy to see four of my favorite series in onepost :D

Same here!! :) I managed to mention 4 out of my 6 favorite series in one comment. Where else can we compare so many books at once.

And don't worry, I always want to hear your fangirling!! :)

Good to know that the Farsala books will pick up, I grabbed the first at the library and so far I'm going, "Hmm, well, this isn't so bad I guess." I was willing to give it the benefit of the doubt because Sounisians recommended it. I'm more inclined to keep going after you said that :D

I didn't think about QT at all while I was reading Elia's story. I do like the comparison of her to Sophos. I agree they have much in common. I am very interested in seeing how her character arc develops in the next two books. I do think Gen would like her, so long as he didn't see her and her god-bling as a threat to his country and queen.

The only character that has reminded me of Gen lately was Sage in The False Prince. But it should be very clear that he is NOT Gen and you know, is therefore not nearly as awesome. Don't expect him to be. I responded to Sage in a completely different way as a reader.

The political intrigue in Rachel Hartman's Seraphina reminded me of QT quite a bit. It is also a story with complicated characters and relationships. The story takes place in a fully realized world that the reader is only given enough information on for the purposes of the story. It is definitely a book I think MWT fans would enjoy.

Sweet, I just picked up Seraphina from the hold shelf at my library. Now I'm really excited to dig into it.

I hope you enjoy it! I have been less than satisfied with many YA fantasy titles I've been reading lately and this one was an extremely welcome breath of fresh air for me.

I loved it! I stayed up until 1:30 in the morning, even though I had to wake up at six for work. I thought both the storyline and the world-building were superb, but best of all were Seraphina and Kiggs (and Orma and Glisselda and Dame Whatsherface). It was lovely reading about two characters who acted with honor and integrity (minus Seraphina's erm . . . withholding of information -- she really didn't have a choice), especially in their last scene together. Great, great book!

Maybe it's like how it is in Jasper Fforde's books, where book characters hang out with one another -- perhaps Gen has been giving Sage some tips on being awesome.

Hmm, I don't have any recommendations, but I'm happy to look into what others have suggested. My comment relating to this post is that when I first read The Thief, Gen was a character unlike any other character I'd come across. And that still holds true. He seems absolutely one-of-a-kind to me. So it will be interesting to read some of these other titles and compare/contrast.

I haven't read the book your talking about, but when I read 'Elisa' I was thinking Elisa in ACoK...the town where the meet was held! As I have said before, just because I read about clever people, does not make me one. *sigh*

Who says you aren't clever?? Just because you read the title of the post and didn't read the body of it, and this is a site to discuss all portions of the MWT universe, and you made a reasonable presumption does not make you not clever.

And don't worry, the more you hang around with them, the cleverer you will get!! :)

Thats why I keep coming back here.... on the theory that cleverness works like osmosis... or something.

Or maybe its the book recommendations. I hope you all appreciate how long my TBR list is and that it is ALL YOUR GUYSES FAULT.
What is the plural of 'guys'? Do clever people even use the word 'guys'?
Maybe the cleverness/osmosis thing doesn't work.

Anyway... I shall work on making that list shorter right now.

Exactly what I was thinking.

Except for the osmosis. 'Cuz I'm not even smart enough to know what that is. =P

I didn't make a connection between Gen or Sophos and Elisa (although I can see it, now that you mention it), but I did get a vibe between Fire and Thorns and Robin McKinley's The Blue Sword. Maybe it was the desert setting and the heroine being stolen away in the middle of the night. Regardless, it was a great book and I can't wait for the sequel to come out in September (October?).

September 18th, but there is an e-novella prequel called Shadow Cats out now. I'm going to try to read it tomorrow.

I saw that on Goodreads and I might have to check it out myself.

On a semi-related note, why is everything happening in September? Everybody and their brother's book is being released that month, both Mumford & Sons and Lucy Rose are releasing albums on the same day, I'm seeing Ben Howard in Chicago with my sister, but I found out that Micheal Kiwanuka is having a gig near my hometown the day before. Of all the times to be saddled with a car payment and on a tight budget . . .

Hmm...I know of another series with a Useless - does that count? He's so old he make Useless the Elder look like the Useless the Much Younger! Haha, there's also another supporting character who is like a cross between Gen and Sophos - He's extremely shy, extremely studious, blushes alot, but he can also be somewhat of a trouble maker in a quiet, sneaky, behind-the-scenes sort of way...and he has a penchant for eavesdropping that would make any thief proud XD I'm talking about The Truth Series by Dawn Cook (the first book is called 'First Truth'), the rest of the plot has very little to do with QT, but those two characters always bring QT to mind...There is also a character who is a storyteller, so stories also play a prominent role, similar to QT.

And now it's time for me to give the requisite "don't judge a book by it's cover" speech I always give whenever recc'ing this series....The were recently re-released with the most misleading, horrible, Alissa-looks-like-Barbie-Doll-with-Marie-Antionette-Hairdo covers....Please, ignore them!!! The old covers were so pretty....See my icon!!!

OH, Great recommendation, Books. I like your character comparisons. And you warning, the new covers make it look like a creepy bad magic sort of story, and they really are soo sweet.

If anyone needs convincing, and doesn't want to check out the awful covers, Here (http://esenawoer.livejournal.com/1211.html) is a link to some trailers that will tell you what the books are all about.

P.S. My icon is part of one of the old (And much prettier covers, too!! :)

I haven't read that book yet, but I'll just be here to add a book with a character that reminded me of Gen. I don't know if you've read The Sherwood Ring by Elizabeth Marie Pope just yet, but there's this young man there named Peaceable who "always gets what he wants". And he's cunning too. And he's thin and small and he looks harmless enough, but he's actually a really good fighter. And uhm... a few other things that I won't spoil for you in case you decide to read it. =D

Although I think I love Perilous Gard more, actually.

The Perilous Gard might be the better novel, but.... its just not as entertaining as the Sherwood Ring. IMHO. :D They're both excellent in different ways.

Oh yes, definitely. I enjoyed them both, but I guess I'm just a bit PG bias =P. But SR is more entertaining than PG.
