At what age do you think Gen made up his mind about being a thief? When did he start to go with his grandfather to Attolia? Any hints to these things in the books that I ( or we...) missed/didn't pick up not her might give an indication to how old he was? Do you think it's possible his grandfather ( or mother even) put the idea in his head when he was really young , if so you think it was on purpose?

I always imagined the idea of him being a theif was planted in his head at a very young age on accident and he started stealing as a toddler but it wasn't until he was about eight or so that his grandfather took intrest in Gen's skills as a theif...

What do you think?

I figured it was instilled young, by a thief-mama who saw great potential in a younger son (and thought "yus this one is so MINE"), and probably became a thing he actively pursued after her death (he was ten then, right?), and became official when he tore up his army papers as a rebellious teen.

I'm actually feeling really sorry for his father right now...raising Gen must have been QUITE an experience.

Can I throw a 'ditto' onto this comment? It's just what I was thinking but my thoughts were far less articulate.

It's interesting that they named him after the god of thieves. Makes me wonder if someone (his grandfather or mother?) had an idea that he might be in line to be the next Queen's Thief.

I think they did. Like freenarnian said, she probably was like, "You have your heir and spare, now this one's MINE."

Except she's way more eloquent.
