Attolia

So, I knit. I knit quite a lot, and that means that I buy a lot of yarn. I recently purchased some reddish lace-weight that reminds me a lot of Attolia and I think that it wants to be an Attolia shawl. No such thing exists, which means I'll be designing and charting it myself, and that means I can put whatever I want on it.

So, what reminds you of Attolia? I'm thinking bees of some sort, and a Greek key shape (like this ), possibly lilies and/or crowns, and maybe some words around the outside if I can work out the stitch count but that isn't enough to fill up a shawl of the size I'm picturing. So give me your Attolia symbols! Please and thank you. :)

This sounds lovely. The only other symbols I can think of are an amphora and maybe a mask?

Please post pictures of the finished project! I'd love to see it. :)

If I think of anything else, I'll let you know...but PLEASE show us the finished result!!!

The Greek Key pattern, or a smaller one like it, would make a beautiful border if you were looking for that, I think.

Bees would be a lovely choice, too. Or lilies!

Oxe harbrea etc. would be a good quote, though it is rather long and might require a blanket instead of a shawl.

Coleus leaves? ;)

She collects beads as well as amphorae, remember?

Hairpins?

A headband?

I don't remember her collecting beads...where is that?

I don't have my books with me, so I just hit Amazon to "Look Inside." On p. 215 (which if I recall correctly is when Costis is seeing the queen's chamber, but I can't remember the exact circumstances) it says something about a row of carved beads on a shelf, a collection of tiny amphorae. Now, it *may* be that the beads are just carving on a shelf, but my theory is that a collector is a collector, and she's got a bunch of beautifully carved beads sitting on a shelf. :)

And it's a huge palace. Goodness knows what else she might collect. Lovely hairpins? We know she has at least two pairs of earrings; perhaps she has a huge collection of them, hidden away where Gen can't find them and steal them. Perhaps that is why she feared him so - not that she worried about his possibly killing her, or anything ilke that: It was the earring! She went in terror of losing them!

olive tree leaves would make a beautiful connecting pattern, wouldn't it?

Or even stylized olive trees?
