Two days ago, Monica Endinger posted this on her blog:

…. a little bird told me the next two [Queen's Thief books] are in the home stretch of being finished and coming out some time in the not-too-far-off future. First the publisher will reissue the original four to bring a new generation of readers to them and then….numbers five and six.

Maybe we'll have a new book this year? I don't know, but I'm so excited I could almost dance on a roof!

That is encouraging news! Does "reissue" just mean print off more copies, or a whole redesign of the previous 4 books?

No idea, but I'm curious as well! I've been hoping for hardcover versions of the first two books with Vince Natale's beautiful cover art, but that's probably unlikely.

Oh, I would so LOVE two pretty new hardcovers, with the wonderful Vince Natale art! And also, maybe they could correct that one sentence with the wrong number of riders…..

So exciting!!

Personally I wouldn't mind a new cover for KoA, since I dislike how pale they made Gen.

Oh true that.

I was thinking they'd redesign the covers with a more YA feel, the way that many books are now being reissued (ie Mistborn). The library system and major book retailers where I live consider them as children's books, but the online community has more or less considered them YA.

That said, all my books are in the Vince Natale version, so I'd be really kind of disappointed if the last two books don't match. T__T

I really hope they keep the Vince Natale covers. I think they're beautiful, and I don't particularly like the trend in YA covers lately. I actually think Vince Natale's painting for the KOA cover is masterful - I guess I wasn't bothered by Gen's (somewhat) pale skin because I loved the whole composition so much, and how it depicted not just the characters, but their relationship.

But alas! We'll probably get a new issue of KOA with a cartoony silhouette of a crown falling across a deep fuchsia background, and some equally cartoony lettering -- fat, blobby and white. And I will weep! And I can just see the Queen of Attolia cover -- can't you? It will have stylized pieces of an amphora flying across the page, on a poison green background, with more blobby, white lettering.

Oh, I really hope not!

I'd so much rather have Vince Natale's paintings! Why should beautiful art and design be relegated to children? YAs can read pretty books, too!

I'm really glad we're all having the same fears here.

Knowing what I know of the publishing insustry, reissue more than likely means rebranding the cover art for the entire series (which saddens me, since I have a desperate need to have all the books in a series match). Seeing as it was the gorgeous cover art that drew me to the series in the first place, I hope they don't decide to go with some generic fantasy stock photo nonsense, but I'm not going to hold my breath.

Guys.

Stop me from getting my hopes up right now and hyperventilating all over the internet.

BECAUSE HOLY CRAP, I'M EXCITED. SO, SO EXCITED.

(Let's be honest, it might be too late for you to stop me from the above activities.)

I really love Vince Natale's covers, but I'm very curious to see what any new editions would look like. I especially would like to have The Thief and Queen of Attolia in hardcover. I wonder if they'll release a box set?

Right now, bookfinder dot com is listing 30 out of 67 hardcover copies of _The Thief_ for $5 or under, including shipping. It's 21 out of 45 hardcover copies of _Queen Of Attolia_ for $5 or under, including shipping.

Erm... none of you know me well enough to know I start quoting random poetry when I get excited. You're wiser now. ;)

Well, I can place your quote. It's from the song "The Wearing of the Green."

Oh, Paddy dear, and did you hear the news that's going round
The shamrock is forbid by law to grow on Irish ground….etc.

I start singing when I get excited! Fortunately, I can sing -- but I do tend to make up my own lyrics. So you're lucky you're not around me. ;-D

I'm singing now, or at least humming -- I absolutely can't wait for the books, but I'm nervous about the covers.

So excited, though!

!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Happiness!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I will echo sentiments that have already been expressed: Mixed feelings on the "rebranding." I loved the cover art and design of the current editions and hope they will keep it in the same style, as they have a degree of sophistication that is distinctly different from and (in my opinion) preferable to what is on the Teen shelf at B&N these days...but obviously it's all about what's best for Megan, and I'm sure all of the publisher's decisions are based on bringing as many readers and as much success as possible.*

*I say this, but selfishly I am still sad :( But of course happy that MWT's hard work will finally pay off.
Conflicted feelings.

Oh, please let it be this year!

I too am concerned about possible new cover art for the reissues. The current art is beautiful, and I don't want new covers that look like generic YA covers...

I confess, I am cheerfully considering, depending on how much I like the new covers, selling my current collection so I can buy them all in hardcover, with matching covers.

And I haven't done THAT since setting out to collect Lloyd Alexander's Prydain Chronicles.

I'm debating whether to go ahead and purchase all the Vince Natale editions for myself before they go out of print. My family does own them all, including hardbacks of KoA and CoK, but my brother took them all to college and he loves them so much I think he should keep them. He reads them every year and I think it's safe to say he loves them even more than I do lol.

I was holding out hope they would release library binding versions of the Thief and QoA with Natale's art, but I haven't seen them so far, and according to this new it's unlikely to happen. :(

If a book does come out this year, it will fit the pattern:

The Thief (1996)
The Queen of Attolia (2000)
The King of Attolia (2006)
A Conspiracy of Kings (2010)
Book 5, a.k.a. The King of Attolia, Part 2 (2016)

Only, then book 6, In Which Eugenides is not Startled by an Elephant, would have to come out in 2020 to make the pattern stick, and that's just an inconceivably long time from now. Break the pattern, I say.

I dunno, I kind of doubt that we will get a book this year. I know it is only January, but still...

Also, yes, break the pattern FOR THE SAKE OF ALL THAT IS SANE.

I feel like sobbing looking at the depicted pattern, thinking "Waiting for another 4~6 years after book 5?" My heart can't take this...

My hope is that Book 5 and book 6 are related and were written at the same time, which means that she has been working on both books simultaneously. Which will hopefully mean that the release dates for both books will be more or less 1-2 years apart.

When I was at a meetup w/MWT many years ago, she said she got stuck on book 5 and couldn't make it work properly (Y'all know what a perfectionist she is!). Then she had the bright idea of working on book 6 while book 5 marinated in her backbrain. So... we might get both within months of each other! (crossing fingers!!)
