Everything is a spoiler in this series! EVERYTHING! Even reading the summaries of the future books would spoil you. Isn't it awesome? XD
I thought they teased it just enough to get you interested in the dynamics of the story. The video does spoil TT, but I found it interesting that they didn't tell you Gen, the Thief, and the king of Attolia were the same person, which saves QoA spoilers.
They also didn't tell you who the heir of Sounis was. Clever!
I saw this on tumblr and thought it was pretty great! Love the enthusiasm. Not so into how everything's being marketed as a Game of Thrones comp these days... but oh well.
No kidding. I showed this to my coworker (who has not read the books), and she said, "Oh, I really didn't like Game of Thrones..." and I had to reassure her that it's really NOTHING like GoT.
I haven't read GoT, but from what I know of the tv show, it's a lot of gratuitous violence and sex for the sake of sensationalism, not plot and is just generally gross. It does annoy me to see totally not gross or gratuitous QT compared to it so much!
However, that's a very common marketing tactic. Like this popular thing? You might like this thing we're trying to promote. Any novel that is vaguely a court drama or political espionage book is using GoT in their marketing, like the dystopian genre is using the Hunger Games.
It's interesting, I'm an ASOIAF/Game of Thrones fan from way back, and never particularly thought there was much common ground there. But on this reread, I sympathize more with the comparison, at least in terms of the labyrinthine political intrigue.
But yeah, everything and it's cousin is being comped to Game of Thrones nowadays.
As I said above, I understand it from a marketing perspective, even if that type of marketing does nothing for me personally. (This is why I'm not in marketing.)
But in all likelihood, if I were trying to recommend QT to someone and they were like, "I love GoT... is it like that?" I'd probably make the same comparisons that you did, but then I'd have to dedicate ten gold cups or something and ask the gods for forgiveness. :p
I saw this on Tumblr, and literally quit watching it after it got compared to GoT and Legend.
I can't say much about either of those franchises, because I haven't seen or watched them, but from what I heard... well.
Though, I think comparisons are a tricky thing with QT because it's so unique and it does such a great job of blending genres. Most of us here in Sounis are diverse readers.
(Still... despite that, I have shed figurative tears a number of times when QT got compared to certain popular books I *have* read and did *not* like.)
