Have you all already seen this??? I was on Amazon's site (ordering cat food, of course) when a popup appeared to tell me I could preorder Return of the Thief. So of course I clicked on it and, lo and behold, there is a bit of a synopis there! Read the part in blue.

The thrilling, twenty-years-in-the-making conclusion to the New York Times–bestselling Queen’s Thief series by Megan Whalen Turner.

This beloved and award-winning series began with the acclaimed novel The Thief. It and four more stand-alone volumes bring to life a world of epics, myths, and legends, and feature one of the most charismatic and incorrigible characters of fiction, Eugenides the thief. Now more powerful and cunning than ever before, Eugenides must navigate a perilous future in this sweeping conclusion. Perfect for fans of Leigh Bardugo, Marie Lu, Patrick Rothfuss, and Sarah J. Maas.

Neither accepted nor beloved, Eugenides is the uneasy linchpin of a truce on the Lesser Peninsula, where he has risen to be high king of Attolia, Eddis, and Sounis. As the treacherous Baron Erondites schemes anew and a prophecy appears to foretell the death of the king, the ruthless Mede empire prepares to strike.

The New York Times–bestselling Queen’s Thief novels are rich with political machinations, divine intervention, dangerous journeys, battles lost and won, power, passion, and deception. Features a cast list of the characters in the Queen’s Thief novels, as well as two maps—a map of the world of the Queen’s Thief, and a map exclusive to this edition.

Erondites is back! And a prophecy! Of the king's death. ðŸ˜ ðŸ˜ ðŸ˜

What do you all think? Speculation?

I am so excited too! I'm actually reading all the information given this time around. I don't have time to say more now, but it's a great summary.

I have a burning need to know where in the overall timeline of this series this book takes place. (The end, obviously, but is there any overlap? Time skipped? WILL WE SEE SOPHOS AND HELEN BLISSFULLY WEDDED?)

I just feel bad for whoever is in charge of marketing these books, specifically writing these summaries, and this book in particular. It does make me chuckle a little that it is so short, as if this is all they felt safe discussing, and it still containes pretty big spoilers for the first four books if the unwitting stumble across this.

The things that stand out - is it the Baron Erondites we all know and love to hate who is still called Baron just because that's a simple way to identify the character, or is it a new Baron Erondites given political power who has also schemed in the past? Sounds likely to be the first, but I'm to the point where I'm suspicious of everything that could be interpreted more than one way. Like prophecies - contextually, it sounds like the prophecy is about Eugenides/Attolis, but there are multiple kings in the series (a conspiracy of them, in fact), so it's at least possible this prophecy is open to interpretation. Also, a 'map exclusive to this edition' - after MWT's ready excitement about getting a map in TaT, I'm surprised there's another one so quickly and that's got me curious.

I know this isn't specifically the answer to the question you asked, but the speculation that has been most on my mind lately is about the coming POV for the final book. Having finally found a copy of The Dalemark Quartet by DWJ, I'm really starting to wonder if there won't be an additional change of POV where perhaps we'll get something like the historian's epilogue after "Drowned Ammet" discussing some notable historical points about the series and characters, or maybe something to/from the mysterious Gitta Kingsdaughter as part of a larger historical collection , or even by Relius or Gen himself. I could see there being another little tribute to DWJ in giving us a new POV not just from a different person but also from a different time. The first book is written as a chronicle of Gen's adventures by himself after all, and a lot of CoK is similar.

Some great thoughts and questions, here! I was kind of surprised to see Baron Erondites back in the picture, and yes, it raised my suspicions (or the possibility of the timeline being funky). I don't want to see Gen die, but I'll be throwing myself in front of Sophos in the event of a cruel plot-twist.

I've been re-reading Howl's Moving Castle and Castle in the Air and feeling all the DWJ-MWT feels. <3

(I can just imagine book 6 ending all dramatically with Eugenides' funeral, or some such, followed by an epilogue in which he pops out of some hidden tunnel under the morgue with a cheeky, "WHAT A LIE THAT WAS!")

I've just read DWJ for the last 2 months and completed 13 novels, and I totally see the influence on MWT's writing! Specifically the POV changes in the Chrestomanci novels, both within the text (so like QOA), and also going from book to book.

"What a lie that was!"

If this isn't part of the next book, I might be tempted to write my first ever fan fiction just because I love this so much.

Oh dear, I haven't considered this before, but is Gen going to fake his death??? That could actually happen, so he can leave and go do Thief stuff. Did he start the rumors about the prophecy himself, and has been acting sick to make it look like he's ill?

I have this sneaking suspicion that the timeline here is funky. I feel like The Return of the King is going to overlap with CoK and TaT. There seems to be stuff going on with Gen during those books that the reader is never privy to due to PoV.

Which leads me to believe that RoT is going to explain where Pigeon came from and not pick up right after TaT. The mention of Erondites also makes me excited, because Dite and Sejanus!

Ow, alternate title, Erondites's Revenge! (I've been watching too many horror movies.)
