Date: 3/29/20 06:23 pm (UTC)I tried a baking experiment and made pumpkin chocolate chip cookies, which was a surprisingly fantastic combination.
I have also been reading more, which has been really nice. I'm currently reading Gideon the Ninth, and am revisiting the Kiki Strike series and the All the Wrong Questions series.
BTW, if your library is closed, my state has an online library for ebooks and audiobooks. All you need is your library card number. Your state may have the same. You can also get certain free ebooks if you have Amazon Prime.
On trend, I started listening to This Podcast Will Kill You, which is a nonfiction podcast about infectious disease. They have a very informative one on the 1918 Influenza, which was both a great idea and a mistake for me to listen to. XD
I'm rewatching Downton Abbey for some nostalgia, which recently got added to Amazon Prime, yay!
If you're looking for new things to watch, I highly recommend Cells at Work, which is on Netflix and is also free on Crunchyroll. It's about anthropomorphic cells and is a very entertaining way to learn about how the human body works. Some other Netlfixs recommendations are The Dragon Prince, Troll Hunters, and How to Train Your Dragon: Race to the Edge. I think QT fans would like all of those.

Date: 3/29/20 07:41 pm (UTC)I also love the pumpkin + chocolate combination! (Pumpkin pie and chocolate ice cream. Mmm!) And I enjoyed The Dragon Prince on Netflix. Claudia and Soren are my favorite characters. (I have a soft spot for chaos siblings!)
I've just finished reading Jane Austen at Home by Lucy Worsley (whose excellent Jane Austen documentary can be found on YouTube!) and that made me want to read Mansfield Park again, so I did. Before that I read A Pocket Full of Murder and A Little Taste of Poison by R. J. Anderson and found them tremendously fun (bonus points for gorgeous cover art and Lord Peter references). And I'm currently reading a Beatrix Potter biography and The Brothers Karamazov, as well as re-reading The Sherwood Ring by Pope. The last is an old favorite, and something of a comfort read. I can't decide if Gen and Peaceable would be great friends or arch rivals! I lean towards the latter, despite their personalities being so similar... or perhaps because of it. :)

Date: 3/29/20 08:53 pm (UTC)Claudia and Soren are my favs too! I always appreciate a pair of not quite evil siblings. I also want to start calling coffee hot, brown morning potion now and see if anyone gets it.

Date: 3/29/20 11:58 pm (UTC)The documentary is definitely worth a watch (though I warn you, the end is sad). Here's the link: https://youtu.be/tSW4u6uA8Cw?t=1

Date: 3/29/20 11:50 pm (UTC)Skillshare.com offers lots of art/photography/computer classes, many for free. I finished one that taught me to paint botanicals with watercolors and add details with Micron pen. I learned a lot. They have one called "How to Create a Horror Character" that sounds intriguing. :-)
Baking, yes! I managed to grab the last bag of flour at the grocery store last week, so I'm set for awhile. I've been working my way through Jim Fobel's Old Fashioned Baking Book. I've made a lovely raspberry tart (have finally gotten the hang of pastry cream), cardamom cookies, and a carrot cake with cream cheese frosting. Next, I think are homemade brownies with chocolate frosting.
As far as shows to watch, I'm LOVING The Great Pottery Throwdown on YouTube. If you like the Great British Baking Show, you'll love it, too. There are 3 seasons, all on YouTube.
See you at the chat!

Date: 3/30/20 06:57 pm (UTC)Oof, I’m sorry I missed the chat. I need to check in here more often. Hopefully I can catch the next one!
The #1 quarantine rec from me is the Netflix series Crash Landing on You. I cannot recommend this show highly enough! It has become a highlight of our family’s daily quarantine routine. We laugh, we cry...we’ve completely fallen in love with these characters and this story. It’s in Korean with subtitles but don’t let that scare you away. It’s easy to follow and utterly charming. ❤️ Gen & Irene are my all-time favorite fictional couple, but right now Jeong-hyeok & Se-ri are giving them some serious competition.

Date: 4/3/20 04:48 pm (UTC)The library where I work closed down on March 13th, and we've all been working from home ever since. My role is primarily in-person customer service, so I'm having a harder time adjusting than some of my colleagues who usually do more stuff behind the scenes anyway. So, I've been doing lots of webinars, updating our FB page, writing blog posts for our website (when it's published, I'll link my post about wherein I give a nod to MWT), and remotely checking the library voicemail so that I can assist patrons from home.
Non-work related....I've hit kind of a reading slump, but then something triggered me to rewatch the Lord of the Rings movies. I was a HARDCORE fanatic back in high school and college, but burned myself out or something because I haven't read the books, watched the movies, or even listened to the soundtracks in over a decade. Well, so far this week I've watched the first two movies, and am just waiting for a good 5 hour window of uninterrupted time to watch RotK. In the meantime, I keep opening up my iTunes library and working myself into a goosebumpy, fangirly, teary-eyed swoon with my old friend Howard Shore. I also maybe contemplating spending $50 on a good quality mallorn leaf brooch. Compromised by ordering instead a White Tree of Gondor t-shirt (clothes for WORK, duh), as well as a new One Ring. My old Ring was stolen from a LotR Monopoly set, but dammit I'm an adult now and I want a grown up Ring!....Anyway, part of this reawakened passion was me pulling "The Hobbit" off of my bookshelf, and breezing through half of it in one sitting. Reading slump, obliterated!
Also doing a lot of baking! I bake small-batch cookies and muffins (because my husband has no self-control around a full batch) courtesy of the Dessert for Two blog. Also baking bread so that we can hold off on using the store-bought bread in our freezer. Our hens have resumed laying, so we have fresh eggs, and I can continue making normal recipes rather than hunting down egg-free versions. (Word on the figurative street that egg-shortage are the new toilet-paper-shortage.)
I've also made some poor Amazon choices. The days are blending together, so I've been ordering little things here and there online (including from local small stores that need business) so that I can try to get something in the mail every few days to break up the monotony. Not a healthy habit....but here we are.
Stay safe and stay healthy, Sounisians!

Date: 4/5/20 03:15 am (UTC)I think right now is a great time to revisit comfort reads. We all need a little familiarity right now.
There also seems to be a shortage of flour, yeast, and baking powder. I feel like it's kinda like when a movie is set to premiere next month, and you try to get the book it's based on from the library, only to find it has a two year wait or something...? Everyone seems to be baking right now.
Luckily, I can buy eggs locally. For anyone experiencing an egg shortage, apple sauce serves as an excellent substitute when baking. I've done that when I've baked for a vegan friend of mine.
If you still have a normal income coming in, on online shopping habit, especially for small local businesses, is not such a bad thing right now. :)
