Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

MWT just dropped three "secrets" about Return of the Thief on HarperTeen's twitter:

https://twitter.com/harperteen/status/1304108814690643968?s=21

The first one will have Sounisians exchanging knowing smirks. The other two... oh my gosh.

I can't wait for this book!

Actually, it only annoyed me! That kind of coy teasing about something one has been waiting for and still has weeks to wait is not cute or funny to me.

I don't think she's going for coy teasing necessarily, as she's given us little snippets before previous books as well. I just imagine it's hard to do much to promote this grande finale in the year 2020, so she's opting for a number of virtual approaches. I liked that each of these three were fairly explicitly noted as being 'secrets' for those who weren't looking for spoilers, but that they are still details given in such a mwt way that they could potentially mean any number of things or appear any number of ways. I have very deliberately avoided the first few chapters preview because I don't want that kind of detail yet, but I didn't feel teased at all by these three secrets because I don't think they'll ruin my ultimate experience of the book at all.

That was a cranky knee-jerk reaction on my part--I should have restrained myself. Because no one who would agree with me would be willing to admit it here. I realize that she is treading a narrow road. I guess I must be one of the silent majority on the other side of the spoiler-phobic divide. I want bigger, better, more obvious spoilers--the larger the number of them the better.

Yeah, I agree with you -- I never got the impression she was being coy or teasing at all. The secrets were pretty informative compared to the crumbs we got for other books. I'm actually surprised at how *much* information she and her publisher have willingly given away to promote this book. Which I appreciate. I remember going into Thick As Thieves pretty much blind, and... kind of being let down that it was all about Kamet and just Kamet and more Kamet... I think I would have appreciated Kamet more if I didn't go into the book hoping for Gen or Sophos or Irene.

I won if we ever find out the answer to the third. Or if it will remain unknown

My current 'my first throwaway thought but I'm totally fine being proved wrong' prediction is we'll find out it's the same god, just called different names by different people's/children of the Sky and Earth. Like how many mythologist have a trickster god/mythological figure, and in-universe they could all just be Eugenides having a great time dressing up differently for different countries.

My guess would be the same, but like you, I would be happy to be surprised. It’s going to be a fun variation on deus ex machina, however it plays out!

The eagles are coming! And...they’re rescuing goblins...

Hahaha! That would be a story. The Medes and the Eddisounisattolians are really all the same people, just separated by the last earthquake when Sky/Earth fought, although I refuse to accept that Nahuserish and Eugenides are secretly half-brothers.

Maybe it's Brave Ennikar, come to watch over Costis in battle.

Are we going to have a spoiler discussion about Apple link of the first few pages that Rosalun posted?

I lasted about 3 hours before I caved and went to read the pages.

Also, I hope the first 3 pages aren't 10% of the book (as online retailers post up to 10% of the book in sample pages)

From the sample pages, you can see how many chapters there are and apple had the first two in the sample. And according to Amazon, it’s the longest book in the series

It made me want to cry, cheer, cringe, laugh, rage, sigh, hug everyone, and most of all Read More! I was hoping it would make me less desperate for the book to arrive but no, it didn’t help.

If you all want to start up a spoiler discussion, feel free. Just be sure to make it clear that there are spoilers and put any spoilers under an LJ cut.

I'm so used to her not revealing anything that her actually dropping some significant sounding information is startling! I'm SO excited for this book!

Right?? Like, I'm so used to her saying "Not Telling," that this is just blowing my mind away.

To be fair, I think for ACoK, she did do one of those 5-word reveals, but these 3 "secrets" are much bigger than that.

At first I said I wasn't going to watch it. I don't want three hints!

Well, that lasted about 10 seconds. Very intriguing!!!

These are all cool, but I can't get past the part about elephants! I have been excited and curious about them for years since mwt said they'd be making a cameo at least, and while I'm sad Gen doesn't bring a pet elephant home one day to Attolia (Look, I can steal anything!), the 'yet' gives me hope the story at least exists somewhere even if not in RotT.

I’d like to know just how many lattes they plied her with to get that level of disclosure out of MWT. Well played, Epic Reads. Well played.

On my computer, that link spins & spins, but won't play. :(
