Look at the icon. Now you tell me
Feb. 26th, 2007 06:10 pmAs you know I’ve already made a doll of Attolia. That post can be seen here.
I’ve made Gen slightly shorter than Attolia. Making him any shorter would have messed up the proportions so I left it. He does look shorter when they are both together because Attolia looks so regal compared to Gen. It might be the look on her face…
I apologise for his face. It went wrong and I had to do it again so he doesn’t really look like I wanted him to look like. Eyebrows are so difficult to do on such a small scale, as is curly hair. I'm sorry about that. I hope I’ve made up for it with his clothes.
The coat was the hardest thing to make. It is made from shot silk with a gold fabric lining and piping on the button edges. I wanted it so you could take it off and on so I couldn’t hide the knots and stitches by sewing it to Gen. The buttons are too big, scale-wise, but then again I haven’t got his body in proportional either (oops) and besides, they looked so nice, I had to put them on. There is gold braiding round the cuff and gold embroidery all over the clothes. Like Attolia’s doll, Gen’s coat sleeves are lined with ribbon.
Wow. This is turning into a list of excuses, isn’t it? Next, the trousers: had to do these twice to get them right. It’s so much easier making skirts and dresses, by the way. They hide the totally unrealistic sausage legs for one thing. The shoes are rather cute too though I have no idea of what Gen’s clothes really look like together when they are properly matching. You’ve gotta hand it (no pun intended) to his attendants. I was so darn tempted to give him canary yellow clothes. As the coat is detachable, I might make him another coat in yellow.
The hook I love the best. I didn’t use Velcro to attach it to his wrist in the end. The Velcro, as I suspected before, was too bulky and didn’t work well. So I embedded a small magnet in the stump of Gen’s arm so that the metal hook can be pulled on and off just fine.
The hook is made from a drawing pin with wire wound round the pin and curved into a hook. I hope you like it. This photo here shows the “wooden” hand (painted a wood colour). Maybe I’ll make some of the 101 implements, which you can find here. If you have any preference, tell me here (though some might be hard to make.) I am definitely making a wooden practise sword out of matchsticks though.
I am thinking of putting a repelling magnet on the cut off hand so that if you try to stick it back on, it flies off. I hope y'all don't think I'm totally twisted or something. Actually, I didn't cut Gen's hand off right until the end and felt weirdly uneasy about doing it. It might have been because when I was making Attolia, my sister came in and asked, "why are you making voodoo dolls?"
So here are the photos: Gen on his own (note seal ring on hand) and Gen and Attolia.
Edit: here are Gen's attachments in the box I am sending them in. There is a practice sword made of matchsticks, the 'wooden' hand and the hook. The falchion-style practice sword I made fell apart, which is why this one is so lame.
Eddis is next though I probably won't get round to making her for a while.
