This is an awesome song I only just remembered listening to when QoA came out. I absolutely love it. The lyrics remind me of end of QoA to beginning of KoA. I can sort of see both Attolia and Gen singing it though it's more obviously from Gen's POV. (I read The Thief for the first time, 5 years today so I've been looking for more potential soundtrack music.) [profile] avian_xjfound y'all a link where you can listen to it. She rocks. So go listen. Here it is

Here are the lyrics for anyone who has trouble downloading the song.

Edit: When I say "soundtrack" I mean songs that suit the books. Just ideas talked about in The Conspiracy Room.  That doesn't mean there is going to be films. I was listening to this at the same time I got QoA so that formed the mental link between the two...

I hope you don't mean as in a movie soundtrack; I've got dibs.

Personally I think these lyrics are severely generic and doesn't seem to remind me of The Queen's Thief at all but I think It's a great song itself.

No offense, I'm just better than you. And I'm not sorry.

Could we try and stay pleasant please? This goes for everybody who comments. Everyone's welcome to post things like songs they think go well with the books, and everyone else is just as welcome to disagree with them. As long as we all do it nicely.

btw, i' ve been thinking about this for a while. could we make a sort of fan soundtrack for QT? everybody suggests stuff, and we could have theme songs for each char. to prevent conflict, (such as above. sighs.), we could have multiple theme songs for a char. but there must be some sort of explanation by the suggestor on why it's related. and one lovely day we'll post it up in a zip file for everyone to download. i have no suggestions for songs though, sorry =P

It sounds like fun, but I think it would break more than a few copyright laws.

people do it quite often (there is one 'our mutual friend' one, for example), though i have no idea if it is legal. maybe allow downloads for only a week then remove the files? then how do free music blogs work anyway?

Good question, jyms. I think there's a difference between sites that allow you to listen to a song, and those that allow you to download and keep the song. Although I'm not positive about that; it may all be illegal.

The peer-to-peer download sites (like Kazaa) nearly always involve illegally shared music. Some of the music blogs, OTOH, offer songs given to them by bands who want their music played to increase their popularity and exposure. Often the sites include older or lesser-known works that are owned by people who don't make a fuss about their songs being used. Most music blogs make a claim on the site that they will remove a song if the copyright holder wants them to. A lot of it is pretty shady and if a big record label or a well known group made a fuss they'd have to take the music offline.

We could come up with a playlist and include links to sites that offer the music.

Of course, if we offered downloads to songs on our playlist, I doubt anyone out there would do anything about it. But folks in those bands and recording companies have to put food on the table, too.

That sounds like a good idea Checkers - if it was a soundtrack with links to places where you can stream the song. I'm not sure if it's legal, but I think radioblogclub allowed you to embed a song player or a song in a journal post. If so, you could use something like that. Nice idea jmys.

(And nice icon Checkers)

i'm pretty sure a fanmix would be legal. ideally, the person that makes the fanmix available would have bought all of the songs, but there isn't really a way to tell. I've seen these pretty often, and i've never known anyone get into any trouble over them. maybe just friends lock the post. That way it can be classified as if someone were just letting their friends listen to a CD they own. That's probably not technically legal either, but, hey, i don't own much legal music anyway :P

Gah! Avian!

Even if the music was purchased legally, you are only buying a copy of it for yourself, not to distribute to others. But I'd be fine with it if people could listen, but not download and keep a copy. I agree that few people get in trouble over it, but that's not really the point.

What really brought it home to me was someone saying that we'd never go into a CD store and steal a CD just because the tattooed, pierced clerk *stereotypes wildly* wasn't looking. But illegally downloading music is the exact same thing. It's so easy to buy songs from Itunes, and you don't even have to have an Ipod to use it. No one likes to pay for things they can get free, but if your favorite band doesn't make any money on their music they won't record any more.

Thanks for posting that, emerald. I'm at work so I couldn't listen to it, but I read the lyrics. I just about choked on my coffee when I read the line "So I took your hand..." though.

no, no... Checkers, i was being good for once! true, i don't own much legal music, but i was saying i've never seen anyone get into trouble for posting links to things like radioblogclub where you can listen but not download. they're legal because the site has supposedly bought the music, and is letting you listen to it but not make a caopy for yourself.

Somehow I think that makes it all ok.

The very idea of your not setting a good example is ridiculous Checkers. I can't think of a single time when you've set a bad example.

And this probably isn't down to my blocking memories. Probably.
