But I really don't see him doing some things.

Things Eugenides would never do:

~ Hunger strike for politics

~ Throwing largess to the masses

~ Hiding out in woods with a band of Merrie Men

~ Getting mellow as an old man, and taking to dressing gowns

Also, isn't if funny we call him Gen, though he specifically says he never wants to be called that again at the end of the Thief? Maybe it's just because mock-gutter Gen is so endearing...

I mean, over and above the fact that Eugenides is quite the little mouthful, and not much of a joy to type, either.

What ideas do you have? Just add on in the comments. I'm sure you guys have some much more funny ideas than my paltry scattered thoughts.

Getting mellow as an old man, and taking to dressing gowns

I could totally see him doing this, but it would still be pretending. *amused*

I can see him doing the last three. Especially if his Merrie Men were unwillingly recruited from the Attolian guard. After all, if Teleus is reducing them by half a lot of them will be out of work...

And everyone else calls him Gen, so I guess that's why we do it.

On Merry Men...

The whole fourth book *crosses fingers* is him camping about with his merry men (and bear).

Lol @ "unwillingly recruited"

My unwillingly recruited Attolian Guards for Gen's Merry Men are:

Aris
Costis
Legolas (we always need an awesomely beautiful)
Pol (back from the dead)
Steinides (if Pol can't make it)

and on the journey back.... Sophos

Who else should join the Merry Men? And do they need any Merry Women?

I forgot Dite. You can't have a campfire without a guitarist/lutest.

I'm reading this, going "oh, of course she'll have Aris and Costis and *spits*OMG DOES THAT SAY LEGOLAS??*dies*" LOL!

Heiro should come along, and maybe Agape too. Then they can either have catfights or get along famously (Cecily and Marian, anyone?)

lol - see down below why I call Gen, Gen. I could of sworn his name was Legolas and not Legarus. Though I highly doubt you'd find Legolas weeping in a cell.

Maybe we could have both Legolas and Legarus (The awsomely Beautifuls) they could start a band with rocks with Dite.

I can see him mellowing out a little, but he's always loved being the Thief, so if he does mellow, it may only be to smaller steals.

And as for the name, in QoA, doesn't Eddis call him Gen? And I know in KoA his cousins do. I do believe it's said that only some people can call him Gen.

Nicknames and names, Gen and Eddis

Isn't he called "Gen" in a few select places in the text of KoA? Going on memory here, but I think the text says something like -Gen had returned to the throne- after the scene where he and Attolia dance.

If my memory correct, I thought that was supposed to be significant. He is usually Eugenides in KoA, but in that scene he had had enough and was deliberately staking his claim as something more than the bumbling, naive boy-consort. Ornon had worried that the Thief's essential character had been crushed since becoming King of Attolia, this was the first Ornon had seen of "Gen" the Thief since the wedding.

And now for something completely different -
STOP here is you have not read the SHORT STORY -
I finally read the short-story in the paperback KoA. What is the significance of Helen being fated to be "Eddis" and not "Eddia"? My gut feeling is that she will not be marrying Costis or anyone else. If she was fated to play any sort of feminine role in life (becoming a wife, having children...) then the gods would have let her be the feminine Eddia. They seem to have very deliberately selected a girl to play the role of the last Eddis. And I really don't think she will be able to sidestep her fate as the last Eddis by ceding her country to a husband.

But, I guess we'll have to wait and see.

Good catch! Makes me fear that she is going to die as a warrior without getting her chance for marriage, family, or peace. gods, I hope I'm wrong!

If Eddis doesn't marry, who becomes Queen/Ruler of Eddis when she dies? Boagus? (Sorry if I spelled that wrong...)

I say Gen because I don't want to risk misspelling Euginides. Same reason for typing just Att. and QoA and KoA.

*appears out of lurkdom* I call him Gen because I don't want to accidentally slip up and call him Eugenides in front of my friend I'm forcing to read the books, because I don't want him to figure out he's the Queen's Thief until the end of The Thief. (I, uh, bought him the book...six months ago...and it's still in a drawer in my room. I'm horrible about shipping things. BUT I WILL SHIP IT, AND HE WILL READ IT.)

Actually, I can totally see Gen picking up dressing gowns. For a week or so--however long it takes to drive Attolia crazy. Like--like once they've reached middle/old age, and nothing he does seems to get a reaction from her anymore, and so he decides to do something outrageous just to see her turn pink with frustration or something. So he wears a dressing gown everywhere. With nothing underneath. And he insists on going for long walks in the gardens, 'cause it's "good for his joints," which is, of course, driving her (not to mention his attendants and guards) crazy (though on the inside I'm sure she's...whatever Attolia does that sounds like giggling, because I can't quite make her giggle--she chuckles softly, maybe, giggling sounds silly--because he's being himself and she loves him).

*giggles, because this is adorable in her head, and she's silly*

Um...I'll come back with an idea. Currently lacking in that department. Got sidetracked by dressinggown!Gen. XD

Well at least you read the original post right - I misread it as Gen *talking* to dressing gowns, and you mentioning "picking up" made me think he was going to try chat up lines...!

Anyway, I think Gen would be right at home with Chrestomanci-style magnificent dressing gowns.

*laugh* I read "Talking" the first time too and was wondering if there was some cult book were a guy talks to dressing gowns.

Also in the QoA, it says something about only his close friends being aoud to call him Gen. I think it says that sometime when the magus is first in Eddis

I prefer Gen to Eugenides. Partly because it's much shorter to type but also because my accent mangles the 'Eu' and I don't like it (and I'm not to sure how to pronounce the name anyway...). And because it makes me think of cute Gen in The Thief and not regal Eugenides in KoA.

Aww. I love cute Gen.

Also, you can't pick your nicknames. Once they stick, they stick and you generally have to deal with it. So.

Hmmm. Things Gen would never do:
-not steal earrings
-stop being snarky
-not jump across atriums four stories above the ground "at a distance that would make your blood freeze"
-wear black
-give up
-divorce Attolia
-have an affair
-shave his head
This is giving me too many ideas...

Things Gen would never do:

-be boring
-be predictable
-spend most of his time happily puttering about in his garden during the day, and sleeping peacefully all night

I can see him and a band of Merrie Men taking to the woods of Sounis and driving its king and his cronies insane
