Timeline Project!

Alright! This is my rough timeline for the Thief Series so far. There might be large gaps, I'm just setting up a skeleton for adding more stuff. From this point on, feel free to add details, or correct any mistakes.

I left the events in the books themselves un-covered. So those can be fleshed out if necessary. Things in (parentheses) or with question marks are things I am not certain of and may need to be looked up. =3

Since I haven't had the time to look up all the details, my guesses might be a bit off (concerning ages the books mention and other stuff). Everyone is welcome to help so comments and queries are mightily encouraged! I will update the timeline as we go along and eventually it will become a more formal thread in the Megaron. =3



Eddis allows Attolia to send armies through the Pass to Sounis

Eddis becomes Queen when her two brothers die of fever. Also has one younger sister.

I have to agree, persoonal-interpretation. Though I thought we had discussed that, actually, on the comm somewhere, and everyone seemed largely of the same opinion.

It doesn't matter, really...pretty much all we know for sure is that he's young.

One thing I noticed, I'm pretty sure that Irene is older than Helen. I think it implies that at several points in QoA. :) I'll double check.

And I'm guessing Gen watched Attolia dancing before his grandfather died. He was a child at the time, and would have been unable to go to Attolia by himself. Perhaps it was the first time his grandfather took him? In terms of Gen's age in The Thief, I remember that conversation, I think most of us agreed he's be about 16. Young enough to still be considered a boy by many. Perhaps 19 or 20 at the time of QoA. Though again, he'd have to be young enough in QoA that Helen could be justified in stating that any relationship between them would involve no small matter of robbing the cradle. :) I'll double check the references. Great timeline! I'd never have remembered half of the events you've mentioned.

Actually... I'm not sure if she's actually older, but Attolia I think came to the throne first... aaaaah... I need to reread QoA... T_T *gets to it*

Basically I moved Irene being born to being before Helen and the jury's still out on the exact timeline for Attolia and Irene's respective ascensions. I have a hard time remembering Attolia's timeline because I only read QoA twice I think... as compared to how many times I've read the Thief, it's all a bit shady... not to mention QoA's longer and more detailed...

I'll change Gen's age in the thief to 15-17 then, since no one seems to think he'd be older (myself included XD) I thought 18 at the oldest...

Irene definitely ascended to the throne first. I remember the flashback scene where she pulls Helen aside to advise her with what she's learned about ruling thusfar.

I think the beauty of The Thief is that Gen's age is never mentioned; it means that we each separately get to decide how old we're going to imagine him.

I would suggest that instead of guessing how old Gen is during the events in his life, we mark dates by when they happened according to the books. The plague, for example, took place about thirty years before The Thief, I believe. Gen tore up his enrollment papers two years before The Thief. The events in the QoA take place over about two years, and Gen destroys the House of Erondites in three months.

The timeline idea is great, though. I really like it.

Good idea I will at least add the time intervals you mentioned. =3 I agree, his age really isn't made relevant at any point in the story, besides everyone mentioning that he is young, so... maybe only mentioning it in fine print? ^^

I agree: Irene is older than Helen; it's mentioned a few times specifically that she's both older and took her throne sooner than Helen (QofA 69, 227)

Eugenides said in The Thief that he was 10 was his mother died. In QofA it says he told his father very shortly thereafter that he intended to be the next Thief of Eddis ==> personal interpretation: he had already begun training with his grandfather as well as sword training with his father and at this point, chose one over the other (in The Thief, Helen and Temenus were already fencing at age 9)....sometime after this, he tears up his papers in the Eddisian Guard in a public fight with his father (in The Thief, he tells the Magus he hasn't held a sword in the 2 years since that fight, so if we assume he is 15-16 in The Thief, he must have been 13-14 when the argument took place).... ages in the last parentheses are interpretation, so you can leave them out but age at the top was really mentioned

Eddis's 2 brothers died of fever (hardcover QofA, p. 39)…she has one younger sister by the way
Irene's 1 brother died "falling" from his horse--Irene suspects treason/assassination (QofA hardcover p 226); incidentally the same day her brother dies is the day she broke her amphora of perfume (p. 155) ==> a politically-motivated engagement is arranged for her; after she is engaged, Eddis's brothers become ill (p 226)

The Magus lived on the border of Sounis/foothills of Eddis...after the plague, he moves to a foster family and soon moves to the city/capital of Sounis to study

oh...sometime before the events of The Thief, Ambiades starts taking bribes to work for the Attolians

- confirmed that Irene was born before Helen
- confirmed Eugenide's age when his mother died
- added Helen and Temenecus starting fencing
- added Eddis' ascension details and length of reign at the end of The Thief.
- added Magus background info
- added Attolia's ascension info.
- added Ambiades' bribes
- shifted some timeline elements around to make more sense (from the time Eugenides begins training until Ambiades and Sophos become apprentices.

there's a 2 year gap between The Thief and QofA because the Magus mentions Eddis's reforms over the last 7 years

I'm of the opinion that Gen is a bit older than what you guys think. I don't think he could have enrollment papers for the Eddisian guard at 13 or 14, and he could move through Sounis in and out of wine shops, etc. I'd guess he was 17 or so in The Thief, 18 at the start of QoA, and 20 at the end of it. Maybe.

And I'm guessing that Helen is 2 or 3 years older than Eugenides, and Irene is 2 or 3 years older than her. Just my opinion.

Mmm... I thought he was more in his late teens at the end of The Thief. he seemed very mature... and no offense to any young members, but I think his youth and level-headedness make sense for a more mature young man, about 17 or so...

I may be biased a little because I am older... but meh. ^^

When I read The Thief, I kinda felt it was set in ancient Greece, or a fantasy world based on ancient Greece. So, along those lines, girls got married in their teens back then and boys started training when they were flexible little kids (think Spartans? but less severe?). Plus, being "back then" and a "Mediterranean country" I decided "in the privacy of my own skull" that the only things to drink were wine, water, and maybe juice = no minimum drinking age. So, if girls can marry at oh, let's say 14-16 and be engaged younger, I'd say guys could join/be drafted into the army around 14-16. So if you can die for your country, surely you could drink with a rowdy bunch of soldiers and tavern people? Besides, the profit-minded tavern owner isn't exactly going to tell a teenage to watch his intake ;).

Alternatively, maybe he was a little on the young side in the Eddisian Guard scenario because he was very talented, and maybe being a part of the royal family meant that other people thought he ought to be trained to guard his own cousin?

...this was posted a long time ago, but I just started lurking here, and maybe you'll get a message about my posting, maybe not.

Anyway, I just thought I'd mention that I think it said Attolia was 13 when she got engaged. *shrugs* And Eugenides was older than 6 when he saw her dancing in the garden, and she was probably about twelve (personal interpretation--but she was almost definitely younger than 13). So she was about 14 when she ascended the throne (she was supposed to spend a year with her fiance, but her father died).

...I see it says she was engaged for 1 year and 6 weeks. ...hm. I'll go double-check on that...

I believe it's in QoA - Eddis won't let Gen up to the roof and while Gen is sulking through the palace (before he goes to sulk in the temple?) he thinks about how it is the right of thieves to fall to their deaths, and how his grandfather couldn't make it up to the roof in his old age so he threw himself over a stair banister.

helen is five years older then gen. in som copies of KoA there is a short story in the back that says she is nine and he is four.
