One thing everyone loves about the Queen's Thief series is that no matter how many times you reread, there's always something new you realize. Sometimes, the it's bits of dialogue given new meaning with context. Sometimes, bits of the plot that fit together just so. Often, the realization is extremely painful and honestly makes you want to cry. This is one of those. Now someone may have talked about this before, and if that's the case, I apologize for bringing it up again. Otherwise, here we go.

Hello Sounis members!

I have read this journal since the last book came out - I didn't know any fellow fans in real life and had so many questions and things I wanted to think about after reading it that I went searching online for fans and found this wonderful site. The discussion here helped me so much - I swear I missed at least a third of what was going on the first time round! I also owe this group a huge debt for recommending the Vorkosigan saga - I found them through you and love them almost as much as this series!

My user name of mouseguru is because before having kids I worked in a lab with transgenic mice:) Despite being a science type, I love to read and happily ignore my housework whenever I find a good book. I have four kids who are my full-time job :)

I am lucky enough to have a 16 year old daughter (who was a toddler and my only child when I first encountered these books!)who recently became obsessed with these books, so we've been reading and re-reading and talking about them for the last month or so. Added to the excitement of the news of the new book, I was inspired to jump in and join the discussion here. Anyway, we came up with a question for pondering that I don't think I've seen here yet. I don't think we can figure out the answer, just wondered what ideas other fans might have.

While rereading QoA, I noticed this statement from Nahuseresh, speaking of how Attolia secured her throne with brilliant tactics from "an advisor, probably the Baron Oronus, or Erondites's father." I thought it was interesting that he sees Erondites's father as a candidate for one of Attolia's closest early advisors, when the current baron is her greatest enemy. Could the father, after initially supporting Attolia, have become one of those early traitors that was executed horribly as a deterrent, thereby earning the current baron's enmity? Or do you think it's more likely that the current baron is just power-hungry with no particular personal anti-Attolia feelings?

Thanks for all the reading pleasure you all have given me over the years!

Family

Alright, this is a little thing, but it just blew my mind.

We know that Eugenides has several siblings. We know that at least some of them are married. Thus it stands to reason that those siblings may have children.

You guys. Somewhere in Eddis there may be a bunch of kids running around talking about their Uncle Gen and Auntie Irene.

I'm flailing here. Anyone want to draw some adorable family fanart?

Yes, that is a terrible title, and no, I couldn't think of a better one. (But I'll take suggestions.)

Lately I've been thinking about father figures in fiction. And, in the ongoing quest to discuss every single aspect of the Queen's Thief series, I naturally turned the focus of these thinkings onto Gen and company.

I am your father. )

Ok, Gen is part of the royal family of Eddis, right? Is it on his mother's side or his father's side (or both)? I just can't remember if the Thieves were related to the sovereigns or what.

I looked in some old posts and found the approximate ages of Stenides and Temenus.  Here is my sort of family tree for Gen:

Minister of War = Gen's mom (aka Queen Thief)

                             |
--------------------------------------------------------------------
|                                       |                                                |
Stenides                  Temenus                               Eugenides

There are unnamed (so far) sisters in the middle, I think two.  I have a few questions about his siblings.  We know that Gen is an outcast because he became the Thief.  We also don't hear about his family (other than MoW and Eddis) visiting him.  I saw that it could have been because Eddis was at war.  I was wondering your opinions on where Sten and Temenus lived.  More specificaly, do you think they were at Court?  As far as his sisters, is it safe to assume they were married to barons?  Their grandfather was Eddis and their father was Minister of War, so they would be a fairly high marriage.  I was just wondering what everyone else imagined his brothers and sister being like and what they would do if Gen came back to Eddis (ya, gave away part of my storyline, I think it is almost done-I just have to get it on the computer now)).

Nonetheless...

(Apologies in advance if I am blatantly repeating stuff you've all figured out years ago.  I've looked about and not seen much, but that doesn't mean it's not there.)

Ok, so I've been thinking rather excessively about Gen's family lately, particularly his mother.  I think it would be amazing to get to know her a bit; I get the impression that a lot of Gen's characteristics might be hers (aside from skill with swords, etc., although who knows?) and that she would have the same...fierce but fascinating personality.  Not that I think Gen is excessively fierce, but he can be scary.

Enough babbling.  As a result of my aforementioned thoughts about Gen's mother, I've been thinking about her death, which was reportedly from a fall out of a window in the palace when Gen was young.  He says (to Sophos, I think) in The Thief that she had been dancing on the roof of the palace and slipped coming back in.

Fast forward to KoA, where Gen tells Attolia that he learned to dance square dances from his mother.  He says, "We danced them on the rooftops of the Megaron.  According to legend, the Thief and any partner the Thief chooses will be safe."  (p100 in the hardcover KoA).

Obviously, since his mother wasn't the official Thief, the safety rule didn't apply.  However, I'd always wondered why she'd been dancing on the roof anyway.  I mean, all right, if Attolia can dance in the kitchen gardens, Gen's mother can dance on the palace roof.  But it seems logical to me, knowing what we know now, that she would have been dancing with someone.  Like her son?

I feel like we might have heard more about Gen's mother's death if he had happened to be around, but it may be worth a thought.  I'll probably wake up tomorrow and think about this in a completely different way, though, so who knows?

Go ahead.  Tell me I'm reading things into the text that aren't there, and that I should stop trying to make Gen a tragic hero.  (Hero he is, tragic...hardly.  Anyone who can make me laugh that hard can't be tragic.)

Friendship

This is kind of an idea I've been wondering about for a few days now. Does Eugenides have, or has he ever had, friends? We know that there are plenty of people who like him, but most of those seem to be people that he's worked hard to gain the respect of. And of course there's the relatives who so dearly love him yet frequently want to strangle him. But these people don't really seem like friends that little Gen would run around with and joke with and frolic through fields with. Who did he play with as a child? Who did he like to pass the time with in Eddis?

Really, overall it seems like Eugenides has largely been on his own. Is that by his own choice as a necesary part of being a thief? Did he want more friends but just couldn't fit in at the court? How does this fit with the evolution of his character now? Please respond with a 3-5 page report, in-text examples, and a twenty-source bibliography or fear your academic doom.

...or just, y'know, share your thoughts.

So I have a question regarding Gen's family. I know it's been discussed a little before, but we need more in-depth discussion.

How many siblings does Gen have? Where is he in the order of siblings? I always assumed that he was the baby of the family (he seems to have that youngest-child mentality...), especially as what is said about his family is that he has "Brothers and sisters. With the same father." And that "One of [his] brothers is a soldier, and the other is a watchmaker." Now, we know that Sten is older than he, and as Temenus is the same age as Eddis, well, he is obviously older as well.

What I'm really looking for is information on his sisters. More importantly, does he have any younger ones? Given that what is said about his sister is that they are "even married, and honest housewives to boot," I wouldn't think that they would be any younger than he, since <14 seems just a little young to be married and a housewife.

We need this to settle a troublesome discussion with someone about whether or not Gen has a younger sister who might be a Thief. It just seems... doubtfull.

"Yes, and MWT keeps me wanting MORE! Even minor characters barely
mentioned! For example, Gen says in The Thief that he has two brothers,
one a soldier, one a watchmaker. What happened to them? Where were they
during Gen's tumultuous years in court being beaten up by all his cousins?
Where is the soldier brother during the events of the second book? What
about his married sisters? Is Gen an uncle yet? Does he like his nieces
and nephews? What about his brothers-in-law? Does he like them?"

This last bit from the review that dh684 suggested made me realize how little we know about Gen's family. Does anyone know anything about his siblings?

Alright! This is my rough timeline for the Thief Series so far. There might be large gaps, I'm just setting up a skeleton for adding more stuff. From this point on, feel free to add details, or correct any mistakes.

I left the events in the books themselves un-covered. So those can be fleshed out if necessary. Things in (parentheses) or with question marks are things I am not certain of and may need to be looked up. =3

Since I haven't had the time to look up all the details, my guesses might be a bit off (concerning ages the books mention and other stuff). Everyone is welcome to help so comments and queries are mightily encouraged! I will update the timeline as we go along and eventually it will become a more formal thread in the Megaron. =3

Thief Timeline! )

Some events may be out of order... etc. etc. XP

This is just to get us started! You may begin critiquing now... *grin*
