Ok, I've had this question for a while, but I keep forgetting to post.  I was wondering what some of you thought about the pronounciation of "Dite."  You see, I say it with a long i and no e sound at the end, but I noticed that the audiobook says Dit-e, long i and e at the end.  (I hope this is making sense--I don't know how to do macrons on this).  So what do you think?

I always pronounced it the second way but I think that's because that's how they shortened Aphrodite on Xena and Hercules.

I've always pronounced it with a long i and e at the end as well. Because it's a nickname from "Erondites", isn't it? Like with Eugenides, you pronounce the e at the end.

I agree with earlier comments...I pronounced it, "dite-ee", which rhymes with "mighty", like the way you pronounce the end of Aphrodite. Now, when I say I pronounce it that way, I'm sort of lying. I probably ACTually think the word "Dite" as one syllable that rhymes with "bite"....because that's the way to reads, even thought I consciously KNOW that it's supposed to rhyme with mighty. I just try to make sure that if I say it aloud, I pronounce it the right way. I have this issue all the time. For years, I thought Yosemite Park was pronounce, "Yo-zee-might" because I never put the written word together with the "Yo-sem-it-ee" Park that I kept hearing everyone talk about.

Am I the odd one out here in mentally pronouncing Dite with a long e and a long a as if they were Latin vowels -- "dee-tay"?

Ha, no, I do that too. But beats me as to why.

I do Dee-tee, which makes even less sense...

I do that too, because I read Erondites as Eh-ron-dee-tees.

I read the full name like that, but shorten it differently in my head. :D

No, I do too, good to know I am not alone.

I say it this way too. But I'm from a heavily Spanish-influenced area, so for any unknown words and names they all take on Spanish vowels. :P

No, I do that too. That's what I meant to say in my earlier comment: I was thinking "long i" in the sense of a Latin i.

That's how I pronounce it too. "dee-tay"

total frustration

Okay, I know this is not an answer to your question, but you did provide a way in. I am a new user with a new LiveJournal membership, but I cannot find a way to post to Sounis or to get on Chatzy. When I wrote a message and hit post from the Sounis page, the message just posted to my own journal page, which does not help me at all, since I do not know the answers to my questions! But, since you were so kind as to unknowingly provide me a way in, perhaps, my opinion on Dite is long I and long e, pronounced, since it is a proper noun. If part of an ordinary noun or word, I would go with a long I and a silent e. For what it is worth.

I sure hope someone will help me, though...

Have you made sure you're a member of Sounis? It sounds to me like you might not be, but if you are then just ignore me. :-)

Look up at the top of the screen, where it says, "you are viewing the community SOUNIS". Underneath that, it will say both, "join this community" and "watch this community". Choose "Join", and then click through the different options that will come up. After all that junk, the window at the top of the comm should say, "You are a member of SOUNIS". The options will be "Post to this community" and "leave this community". Guess which one you click.

Hope this is helpful, and welcome to the comm!

I pronounce it like fairiedance - die-tea. I used to pronounce it as one syllable, but that was before I got used to the Greek pronounciation.

I was going to suggest you check this as well.

As for Chatzy, I believe the password is case sensitive, so maybe check that you're capitalizing?

Well, Megan always says it's your reading experience, and you can pronounce things anyway you want. I think most of us go with the Anglicized version of Greek (die-tee) -- but if it were really Greek, it would be more like dee-tay. Go with what sounds good to you!

Okay, I am alone here I think. I always said ErONdite (air on di short i tee) and shortened it to Ditty. lol

And rrelf is my brother!!!

Yay!!!

Yay for brother recruitment!

No, I used to put the emphasis on the RON myself. I play with the pronunciations in my head and try new ways.

For the longest time I pronounced it with a long i and a silent e, but after a while I realized that that made no sense and I switched to long I long e. I don't like that though because I sounds like underwear to me.

I kind of pronounce it both ways. I pronounce Erondites as Er-on-die-tees, but for the nickname Dite, I just do the one syllable version. Because its a nickname, its supposed to be short, see?

I do the same as Rosie when I'm shortening it in my head. But possibly if I were to say it out loud it might become Ditty.

I still read things like demesne as de-mez-nee, so what do I know?

I pronounce them the same out loud as I do in my head. You can ask my roommate, to whom I read all of KoA. :-)

With the exception of Costis, which I sometimes say in my head with a long O and sometimes with a short O... for some strange reason. So when reading aloud I tried to keep it consistent with a long O.

It must be an American thing, because in my accent Costis with a long O sounds weird.

I have said it dye-tee. Which is maybe what you're asking? I like it better than the alternatives. :)
