Hello, all!

One of our lovely members (who has requested not to be called out by name, real or LJ, please) has written an article about fanfiction for this month's issue of The Horn Book Magazine, which does reviews of what they find to be the best children's/YA books, as well as articles, interviews, award speeches, etc., all relating to children's/YA literature. Since we are pretty much the best community ever, we feature rather prominently in it. A teaser:

But Sounis brings together hundreds of fans from, quite literally, around the globe — check our user map — and gives us people to talk to. Or, to be honest, people to rant, rave, squee, fangirl, swoon, poeticize, theorize, and offer cookies to.

The entire article is a celebration of fandom and fanfiction's role in it, and makes for a lovely read. You can find the article here, if you missed the link further up. :-)

I think this calls for a party. *sets out tables and chairs and party hats* Go us!

*has read it now*

Very well said. I read that other article back when it came out and it made it sound like fandoms should be homework. Yay!

Also, she mentioned you Jade!

I don't read very discerningly, but it struck me that she suggested that fan fiction was basically the art of story-telling. I love that idea!

I've always thought that fanfiction was like a guide to learning to make your own stories. You have the characters and world set up, and then you can practice with them.

Not that I was ever any good at it... XP

But hey, every story is basically a retelling of another, older story. :)

I've thought this, too. I think fanfiction is a great way for aspiring writers to learn how to create organic plot lines and find a story structure without the distraction of creating original characters and a universe to house their story.

Of course, if all they ever do is write good fanfiction, that's okay, too. Having the 'world' fully explored by a capable writer is a great bonus for fans.

I looked down on fanfiction for a long time, then I read some of the high quality variety and now I'm an ardent supporter. It opened up a whole new world to me.

Plus, it takes guts. I admire that.

Loved the comment about online communities--whether centered around fanfic or certain types of books, or specific authors or whatever--bringing together like-minded souls. And the mention of cookies. :)

Hey, Peggy? Which flavo[u]r of Costis was that you sent in? I'm voting for CabanaBoy!Costis.

Great article! Very veracious [with all 5 vowels] about voracious readers, squee-ers, & consumers of cookies like us.
