So, in the books we never actually get the exact ages of any of the characters. [livejournal.com profile] cyberskiver's comment in the post below this got me thinking about it, and wondering exactly how old everyone on this community thinks the characters are.

Eugenides is supposed to be young. How young is he? How old is the Magus? Exactly how far apart in age are Gen and Irene? Sophos and Eddis?

I doubt that everyone is going to comment and say, "Oh, easy, Eugenides is thirteen!" I don't actually think he's thirteen, chill out. ;) What I mean is, not everyone's going to be in agreement, obviously. But I'm going to go out on a limb here and say...

Eugenides: 20
Irene: 24 or 25

My mum seemed to think that Eugenides was younger, but she wasn't sure, because I seem to remember her comment being, "Eighteen... nineteen... twenty?" She also thought that Irene had been Queen for maybe four years, but I thought it was more like eight, because I got the impression that she was very young when she became Queen, like sixteen, maybe.

So what does everyone else think?

When I originally read The Thief, I thought that he was in his mid-twenties, but then I found QoA, where he is referred to as young so many times. Now I kind of think he was about fifteen/seventeenish in Thief.

Now that I can answer. A year passes between the end of Thief and the beginning of QoA. Two years pass from the beginning of QoA until the end. KoA starts up a few months later.

At the time of QoA Eddis had been ruling for seven years. Attolia a bit longer.

I want Eugenides to be older, but I get the feeling that he's really in his late teens. Maybe 17-18? I actually thought he seemed older in The Thief. In The Queen of Attolia they kept talking about how he was really only a boy, though. So that's where I picked my numbers from.

Irene? Hmmm. I got the impression that she was in her late twenties. 25-27, maybe?

Oh, and my ages are from the time of King of Attolia

I've thought and thought and in my mind, Eugenides is nineteen (remember, he grew between the time Irene cut off his hand and he kidnapped her) or so and Irene is twenty-nine or thirty. Why that old? Because in QoA she thinks that Gen couldn't possibly have bones that ache and that thought feels older then twenty-five and makes it seem like the gap is more than five years.

I think Helen is twenty-four-ish and Sophos is about seventeen. I don't really have a reason for those, just that they just fit with my guesses for Gen's and Irene's ages.

Adding that I'm astonished that so many people thought Gen was mature in The Thief. I was fourteen or fifteen when I read it and Gen seemed very much like a boy my own age then and every time I reread it, it seemed to confirm that in my mind.

That's a different take on it, but good point. I thought that Irene's musings on her aching bones, (which made her sound more like an eighty year old than a twenty-nine year old to me ;) ), were just the product of her difficult time on the throne. I'm probably wrong, but I got the feeling from that sentance that she was insinuating that Gen couldn't possibly have had as hard a time as she had had. I still can't see Irene being more than five years older than Gen.

Here's a thought. If Costis was young for a recruit (I think it mentions a year younger than most new recruits), and Gen was even younger than him, Gen must still have been pretty young in KoA. I wonder how old most new recruits are then. I think it also mentions that his last growth spurt happened in the middle of QoA. He would have been 18 at the most at that time. So assuming another year takes place after that in QoA, and then a few months before KoA, he can't have been older than 20 in the last book. Probably no more than 18 or 19 actually, since boys really stop growing at 16.

o_O

Am I analysing this way too much?

It seems that Costis must have been in the guard for a couple of years by the time of KoA as he's a ----------- (I forget what his position is, a leader of some sort?) And he Could only be like a year older than Gen, like a 21 to his 20.

:) Unless Gen was still only 18 or 19, which I admit I can't see, but seems possible.

That must have been incredibly odd for Costis, and it must have contributed to the contempt that a lot of guards felt towards Gen. If Costis really were three years older than Gen rather than just one, Gen's youth would have been more obvious. No one would have liked that. :) Though you're right, a difference of one year would probably have had the same effect.

Costis is a Squad Leader, whom some seemed to think had the potential to one day be captain of the guard, at the beginning. Although Costis doesn't mention it overtly (that I can remember), I think he had pretty bright prospects.

I guess the age thing doesn't matter in the end. :)

About the growth spurt I thought it was more the growth spurt between looking like a teen and looking like a (semi) 'man', Which doesn't always happen when your in your teens - look at some actors- the two Malcolm in the Middle boys and the Gorden-Levitt boy (3rd rock and 10 things I hate about you) both still have little boy baby faces and they're like how old?

Date: 4/30/06 03:24 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] rowana.livejournal.com
Good point. I'm not sure I like the image of a 21 year old Gen who still has a boy's face, but you're right. :) I was just going by the fact that most men's last major change happens before 18. It really is so versatile though, that it's probably best to stick to our own images of Gen, unless they contradict something in the books. I think we can all agree on a general age range.

It's not at all unusual for boys to grow taller at 18 and continue to fill out after that. Do you think part of the reason everyone calls him young in QoA could be because he just looks young, because he's short and slim?

Hadn't Gen torn up his enrollment papers for the Eddisian army a few years before The Thief? Yes, here it is. "...I hadn't held a sword in the two years since I'd torn up my enrollment papers in the Eddisian Guard." I can't imagine you could enroll in the guard any younger than 15 or so. Even that seems a bit young to me. That would put him at 17 in the first book, 18 at the start of QoA and 20 at the end.

If Megan is reading this, I'll bet she is smiling at our twisting ourselves in knots to figure it out. This is fun.

There seems to be a general age range which fits. 17 in The Thief seems to fit.

Here's a thought, perhaps we should ask Megan?

Or have we done too much of that lately? :)

I think something we have to remember when considering all their ages is that, and this is speculation, really, I haven't read it somewhere, but the difference of a year didn't count all that much until schooling and seperate grade levels began. For instance, now eighteen and ninteen can be the difference between high school and college, but before high school and college, it was only a year, and there wasn't such a maturity jump. Just a thought.

That's true. And there were no "teenage" years then, people were considered adults at an earlier age.

Okay, i didn't read everyone's comments, because there are sixty! So here is what i think. I believe that in the King of Attolia, Gen is still in his teens. Not only do the older people call him boy, but so does Attolia youngest attendant Cloe. This would make him about 13 or 14 in The Thief. I believe that is accurate, because while he is considered a boy, Sophos is considered younger and Ambiadis (sp?) older, yet still an apprentice.

Also consider that these books do not take place today, or anywhere near today. People were considered adults a lot earlier, and took up jobs earlier.

That's just what I think, and unless Megan would ever be willing to divulge this information, I don't think anyone can agree. Unless she did tell us the ages, but i just missed it...
